    Active control transport design criteria

    Get PDF
Vehicle design considerations for active control applications to subsonic transports are examined. Active control is defined along with those functions which are considered in the study of design criteria. The FAA regulations governing transport aircraft design are briefly discussed

Coherent energy migration in solids: Determination of the average coherence length in one‐dimensional systems using tunable dye lasers

    Get PDF
The coherent nature of energy propagation in solids at low temperatures was established from the time resolved response of the crystal to short optical pulses obtained from a dye laser (pumped by a nitrogen gas laser). The trapping and detrapping of the energy by shallow defects (x traps) was evident in the spectra and enabled us to extract the coherence length: l≳700 Å=186 molecules for the one‐dimensional triplet excitons of 1,2,4,5‐tetrachlorobenzene crystals at T<4.2° K. This length which clearly exceeds the stochastic random walk limit is related to the thermalization mechanisms in this coupled exciton–trap system, and its magnitude supports the notion that exciton–phonon coupling is responsible for the loss of coherence on very long molecular chains (trap concentration is 1/256 000)

Rule Managed Reporting in Energy Controlled Wireless Sensor Networks

    No full text
This paper proposes a technique to extend the network lifetime of a wireless sensor network, whereby each sensor node decides its network involvement, based on energy resources and the information in each message (ascertained through a system of rules). Results obtained from the simulation of an industrial monitoring scenario have shown that a considerable increase in the lifetime and connectivity can be obtained

Flying not flapping: a strategic framework for e‐learning and pedagogical innovation in higher education institutions

    Get PDF
E‐learning is in a rather extraordinary position. It was born as a ‘tool’ and now finds itself in the guise of a somewhat wobbly arrow of change. In practice, changing the way thousands of teachers teach, learners learn, innovation is promoted and sustainable change in traditional institutions is achieved across hundreds of different disciplines is a demanding endeavour that will not be achieved by learning technologies alone. It involves art, craft and science as well as technology. This paper attempts to show how it might be possible to capture and model complex strategic processes that will help move the potential of e‐learning in universities to a new stage of development. It offers the example of a four‐quadrant model created as a framework for an e‐learning strategy

Current fluctuations in stochastic systems with long-range memory

We propose a method to calculate the large deviations of current fluctuations in a class of stochastic particle systems with history-dependent rates. Long-range temporal correlations are seen to alter the speed of the large deviation function in analogy with long-range spatial correlations in equilibrium systems. We give some illuminating examples and discuss the applicability of the Gallavotti-Cohen fluctuation theorem.Comment: 10 pages, 1 figure. v2: Minor alterations. v3: Very minor alterations for consistency with published version appearing at http://stacks.iop.org/1751-8121/42/34200

Jet photoproduction and the structure of the photon

    Get PDF
Various jet observables in photoproduction are studied and compared to data from HERA. The feasibility of using a dijet sample for constraining the parton distributions in the photon is then studied. For the current data the experimental and theoretical uncertainties are comparable to the variation due to changing the photon parton distribution set.Comment: 20 pages including 11 figures. Enhancement of Kerr nonlinearity via multi-photon coherence

    Get PDF
We propose a new method of resonant enhancement of optical Kerr nonlinearity using multi-level atomic coherence. The enhancement is accompanied by suppression of the other linear and nonlinear susceptibility terms of the medium. We show that the effect results in a modification of the nonlinear Faraday rotation of light propagating in an Rb87 vapor cell by changing the ellipticity of the light.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures Submitted to Optics Letter
