    ‘Without occupation you don't exist’: Occupational engagement and mental illness

    This article has been made available through the Brunel Open Access Publishing Fund.This phenomenological study explores the meanings of work for people living with severe and enduring mental health conditions. The participants were three women and seven men who were attending a mental health day centre. Data were collected through up to three depth interviews with each participant over 18 months. The interviews were digitally recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analysed according to phenomenological principles. Two overarching themes were identified. Building and maintaining an occupational identity expressed the ways in which participants used occupations as the building blocks of an evolving identity. Most of the participants wanted to work, and participation in occupations was seen as essential to recovery from mental ill-health. Work and other ways of belonging encapsulated the need to feel connected to others. Many of the participants envisaged working as a way of achieving this. The longitudinal nature of the study facilitated engagement with the developing narratives and exploration of the changes and consistencies in the participants' meaning making about their occupations. Implications for understanding individuals' occupational participation which enhances a sense of self and promotes feelings of belonging are identified

This paper reports findings from a phenomenological study which aimed to understand the complexity of these meanings by exploration of the perspectives of one individual who was considering returning to work. Data were gathered through a series of three interviews carried out over a period of 18 months. Three themes were identified – Beliefs and Values about Work, Working with a Mental Health Problem, and Planning for the Future. Analysis and interpretation facilitated understandings of what work represented for the participant. What this study has contributed to the evidence base is a deeper understanding of the multiple meanings of work, and the varied roles that work may play in contributing to meaning and quality of life for people with mental health problems

    Z' mass limits and the naturalness of supersymmetry

    The discovery of a 125 GeV Higgs boson and rising lower bounds on the masses of superpartners have lead to concerns that supersymmetric models are now fine tuned. Large stop masses, required for a 125 GeV Higgs, feed into the electroweak symmetry breaking conditions through renormalisation group equations forcing one to fine tune these parameters to obtain the correct electroweak vacuum expectation value. Nonetheless this fine tuning depends crucially on our assumptions about the supersymmetry breaking scale. At the same time U(1)U(1) extensions provide the most compelling solution to the μ\mu-problem, which is also a naturalness issue, and allow the tree level Higgs mass to be raised substantially above MZM_Z. These very well motivated supersymmetric models predict a new Z′Z' boson which could be discovered at the LHC and the naturalness of the model requires that the Z′Z' boson mass should not be too far above the TeV scale. Moreover this fine tuning appears at the tree level, making it less dependent on assumptions about the supersymmetry breaking mechanism. Here we study this fine tuning for several U(1)U(1) supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model and compare it to the situation in the MSSM where the most direct tree level fine tuning can be probed through chargino mass limits. We show that future LHC Z′Z' searches are extremely important for challenging the most natural scenarios in these models.Comment: 58 pages, 5 figures; typos corrected, references added; matches version to be published in Phys.     Bond–slip Behavior of Fiber-reinforced Polymer/concrete Interface in Single Shear Pull-out and Beam Tests

    It has been assumed that the fiber-reinforced polymer/concrete interface is subjected to in-plane shear condition when intermediate crack debonding failure occurs. Therefore, the single shear pull-out test results are often used to predict the intermediate crack debonding failure in beams. In this study, the behavior of fiber-reinforced polymer-strengthened concrete beams and single shear pull-out specimens were studied experimentally and numerically. The bond–slip behavior of the fiber-reinforced polymer/concrete interface was obtained by single shear pull-out and beam tests. In all beam specimens, a concrete wedge located at the edge of the notch detached with the fiber-reinforced polymer debonding failure. This phenomenon shows that the initiation of debonding is due to a diagonal crack formation close to the major flexural/shear crack inside the concrete. The diagonal crack formation is due to a local moment at the tip of the notch. This causes the different stress state and slip of the fiber-reinforced polymer/concrete interface of beam specimens from that of the pull-out specimens. It is found that the bond–slip relation obtained from the pull-out test does not represent the bond–slip relation of the fiber-reinforced polymer/concrete interface in the fiber-reinforced polymer-strengthened concrete beams, and it cannot be directly used for predicting the load capacity of the fiber-reinforced polymer-strengthened concrete beams

    Transfer Length of Strands in Prestressed Concrete Piles

    A top bar effect has been identified in prestressed concrete piles. The effect that this top bar effect has on the development of the prestressing strand is investigated. Strand transfer length is found to be proportional to the observed end slip. While the average transfer length of all strands in a section may satisfy the assumptions inherent in the ACI transfer length equation, due to the top bar effect, top-cast strand transfer lengths are considerably in excess of the ACI-calculated value. The flexural behavior of the pile, accounting for varying transfer lengths through its section, is investigated. Finally, recommendations for in-plant testing and acceptance criteria for prestressed strand bond quality are proposed

    Objective dysphonia quantification in vocal fold paralysis: comparing nonlinear with classical measures

    Clinical acoustic voice recording analysis is usually performed using classical perturbation measures including jitter, shimmer and noise-to-harmonic ratios. However, restrictive mathematical limitations of these measures prevent analysis for severely dysphonic voices. Previous studies of alternative nonlinear random measures addressed wide varieties of vocal pathologies. Here, we analyze a single vocal pathology cohort, testing the performance of these alternative measures alongside classical measures.

We present voice analysis pre- and post-operatively in unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP) patients and healthy controls, patients undergoing standard medialisation thyroplasty surgery, using jitter, shimmer and noise-to-harmonic ratio (NHR), and nonlinear recurrence period density entropy (RPDE), detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) and correlation dimension. Systematizing the preparative editing of the recordings, we found that the novel measures were more stable and hence reliable, than the classical measures, on healthy controls.

RPDE and jitter are sensitive to improvements pre- to post-operation. Shimmer, NHR and DFA showed no significant change (p > 0.05). All measures detect statistically significant and clinically important differences between controls and patients, both treated and untreated (p < 0.001, AUC > 0.7). Pre- to post-operation, GRBAS ratings show statistically significant and clinically important improvement in overall dysphonia grade (G) (AUC = 0.946, p < 0.001).

Re-calculating AUCs from other study data, we compare these results in terms of clinical importance. We conclude that, when preparative editing is systematized, nonlinear random measures may be useful UVFP treatment effectiveness monitoring tools, and there may be applications for other forms of dysphonia.

    Indirect Detection of Forming Protoplanets via Chemical Asymmetries in Disks

    We examine changes in the molecular abundances resulting from increased heating due to a self-luminous planetary companion embedded within a narrow circumstellar disk gap. Using 3D models that include stellar and planetary irradiation, we find that luminous young planets locally heat up the parent circumstellar disk by many tens of Kelvin, resulting in efficient thermal desorption of molecular species that are otherwise locally frozen out. Furthermore, the heating is deposited over large regions of the disk, ±5\pm5 AU radially and spanning ≲60∘\lesssim60^\circ azimuthally. From the 3D chemical models, we compute rotational line emission models and full ALMA simulations, and find that the chemical signatures of the young planet are detectable as chemical asymmetries in ∼10h\sim10h observations. HCN and its isotopologues are particularly clear tracers of planetary heating for the models considered here, and emission from multiple transitions of the same species is detectable, which encodes temperature information in addition to possible velocity information from the spectra itself. We find submillimeter molecular emission will be a useful tool to study gas giant planet formation in situ, especially beyond R≳10R\gtrsim10 AU.Comment: 14 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in Ap

    Top Bar Effects in Prestressed Concrete Piles

    The top bar effect in reinforced concrete is a widely recognized phenomenon. Currently, the ACI Building Code prescribes a 30% increase in the development length of top cast reinforcing bars. No such provision is required for strands in prestressed concrete members. In this paper, the top bar effect for prestressing strands is introduced. Parameters affecting top bar phenomena in prestressed concrete piles are identified, and strategies for reducing this effect are presented. Finally, for the first time, the application of a top bar effect factor for prestressed concrete development length calculations, similar to the one applied in reinforced concrete structural elements, is proposed
