Scaling in the time-dependent failure of a fiber bundle with local load sharing
We study the scaling behaviors of a time-dependent fiber-bundle model with
local load sharing. Upon approaching the complete failure of the bundle, the
breaking rate of fibers diverges according to ,
where is the lifetime of the bundle, and is a quite
universal scaling exponent. The average lifetime of the bundle scales
with the system size as , where depends on the

Bounds for the time to failure of hierarchical systems of fracture
For years limited Monte Carlo simulations have led to the suspicion that the
time to failure of hierarchically organized load-transfer models of fracture is
non-zero for sets of infinite size. This fact could have a profound
significance in engineering practice and also in geophysics. Here, we develop
an exact algebraic iterative method to compute the successive time intervals
for individual breaking in systems of height in terms of the information
calculated in the previous height . As a byproduct of this method,
rigorous lower and higher bounds for the time to failure of very large systems
are easily obtained. The asymptotic behavior of the resulting lower bound leads

Sodium and Water Fluxes in Free-Living Crocodylus Porosus in Marine and Brackish Conditions
Radioactive sodium and water were used to determine total body water (TBW), exchangeable sodium (ExNa) and water and sodium fluxes in free-living Crocodylus porosus in marine (hyperosmotic; salinity = 250/00-350/00) and brackish (hypoosmotic; salinity = 20/00-7.50/00) sections of the Tomkinson River in northern Australia. At capture, size-corrected TBW and ExNa pools in 62 crocodiles (hatchlings, juveniles, and subadults; weight, 0.108-54.4 kg) were independent of salinity history. To determine fluxes, all animals were released at their capture sites and left undisturbed until recapture. Thirty-seven were recaptured after 7-18 days. Fifteen of the 17 hatchlings recaptured from both salinity categories grew and maintained their condition and hydration status. In contrast, all 20 juveniles and subadults lost weight in the same period, and juveniles in hyperosmotic conditions showed significantly lower hydration and condition factors. Water effluxes in hatchlings were ~80 and ~160 ml kg-0.63 day-1 in marine and brackish conditions, respectively. Comparable sodium effluxes were 7.5 and 4.4 mmol kg-0.63 day1. All crocodiles in hyperosmotic conditions had consistently lower water effluxes (~ X0.5) and higher sodium effluxes (~ X 1.6) than did crocodiles in brackish water. In both salinity categories, hatchlings had greater water turnover (~ X 1.3, X 1.6) and sodium turnover (~ X 1.5, X 1.25) than did juveniles and subadults. Interpretation of the field data is complicated by integumentary exchange of sodium and water, a size-related aphagia apparently induced by disturbance, and difficulties of adjusting for allometric differences across a wide range of sizes. Nevertheless, it is clear that C. porosus is able to effect considerable economies of water turnover in hyperosmotic salt water and that the secretory capacity of the lingual glands, as measured in the laboratory, is more than enough to account for the highest sodium effluxes that we measured in C. porosus in the field

Failure Probabilities and Tough-Brittle Crossover of Heterogeneous Materials with Continuous Disorder
The failure probabilities or the strength distributions of heterogeneous 1D
systems with continuous local strength distribution and local load sharing have
been studied using a simple, exact, recursive method. The fracture behavior
depends on the local bond-strength distribution, the system size, and the
applied stress, and crossovers occur as system size or stress changes. In the
brittle region, systems with continuous disorders have a failure probability of
the modified-Gumbel form, similar to that for systems with percolation
disorder. The modified-Gumbel form is of special significance in weak-stress
situations. This new recursive method has also been generalized to calculate
exactly the failure probabilities under various boundary conditions, thereby
illustrating the important effect of surfaces in the fracture process.Comment: 9 pages, revtex, 7 figure
Probabilistic Approach to Time-Dependent Load-Transfer Models of Fracture
A probabilistic method for solving time-dependent load-transfer models of
fracture is developed. It is applicable to any rule of load redistribution,
i.e, local, hierarchical, etc. In the new method, the fluctuations are
generated during the breaking process (annealed randomness) while in the usual
method, the random lifetimes are fixed at the beginning (quenched disorder).

Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) concentrations and menopausal status in women at the mid-life: SWAN
objective We evaluated menopausal symptoms, menstrual cycle bleeding characteristics and reproductive hormones for their associations with thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) concentrations in women at the mid-life from five ethnic groups. methods This report is from the baseline evaluation of the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation (SWAN), a community-based multiethnic study of the natural history of the menopausal transition. Enrollees were 42–52 years old (pre- and early perimenopausal) African American, Caucasian, Chinese, Hispanic and Japanese women ( n = 3242). Enrollees were interviewed about self-reported diagnosed hypo- and hyperthyroidism or thyroid treatment, menopausal symptoms and menstrual cycle bleeding characteristics. Serum was assayed for TSH, oestradiol, testosterone, FSH and SHBG. results There were 6·2% of women with TSH > 5·0 mIU/ml and 3·2% with TSH 5·0 mIU/ml ( P < 0·008) or < 0·5 mIU/ml ( P < 0·02). Women with TSH values outside the range of 0·5–5·0 mIU/ml were more likely to report shorter or longer menstrual periods ( P = 0·004 for both) than women within that range. FSH, SHBG, dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate (DHEA-S), testosterone, and oestradiol concentrations were not associated with TSH concentrations. conclusion In mid-aged women, there was a 9·6% prevalence of TSH values outside the euthyroid range of 0·5–5·0 mIU/ml. Menstrual and reproductive factors in relation to ovarian cancer risk
We assessed menstrual and reproductive factors in relation to ovarian cancer risk in a large, population-based, case–control study. 563 cases in Massachusetts and New Hampshire were ascertained from hospitals and statewide tumour registries; control women (n= 523) were selected through random digit dialing and matched to case women by age and telephone sampling unit. We used multivariate logistic regression to evaluate factors in relation to risk of ovarian cancer and the major tumour histologic subtypes. Ovarian cancer risk was reduced among parous women, relative to nulliparous women (OR = 0.4; 95% CI = 0.3−0.6). Among parous women, higher parity (P= 0.0006), increased age at first (P= 0.03) or last (P= 0.05) birth, and time since last birth (P= 0.04) were associated with reduced risk. Early pregnancy losses, abortions, and stillbirths were unrelated to risk, but preterm, term, and twin births were protective. Risk was lower among women who had breast-fed, relative to those who had not (OR = 0.7; 95% CI = 0.5–1.0), but the average duration of breast-feeding per child was unrelated to risk (P for trend = 0.21). Age at menarche and age at menopause were unrelated to risk overall, although increasing menarcheal age was protective among premenopausal women (P= 0.02). Menstrual cycle characteristics and symptoms were generally unrelated to risk, although cycle-related insomnia was associated with decreased risk (OR = 0.5; 95% CI = 0.3–0.8). We found no association between the type of sanitary product used during menstruation and ovarian cancer risk. In analyses by histologic subtype, reproductive and menstrual factors had most effect on risk of endometrioid/clear cell tumours, and least influential with regard to risk of mucinous tumours. Overall, our findings offer some support to current hypotheses of ovarian pathogenesis, and show aetiologic differences among the tumour subtypes. © 2001 Cancer Research Campaign http://www.bjcancer.co
Bubble collisions and measures of the multiverse
To compute the spectrum of bubble collisions seen by an observer in an
eternally-inflating multiverse, one must choose a measure over the diverging
spacetime volume, including choosing an "initial" hypersurface below which
there are no bubble nucleations. Previous calculations focused on the case
where the initial hypersurface is pushed arbitrarily deep into the past.
Interestingly, the observed spectrum depends on the orientation of the initial
hypersurface, however one's ability observe the effect rapidly decreases with
the ratio of inflationary Hubble rates inside and outside one's bubble. We
investigate whether this conclusion might be avoided under more general
circumstances, in particular placing the observer's bubble near the initial
hypersurface. We find that it is not. As a point of reference, a substantial

The Wicked Machinery of Government: Malta and the Problems of Continuity under the New Model Administration
This is a study focused on the early years of British rule in Malta (1800-1813). It explores the application to the island of the “new model” of colonial government, one based on direct rule from London mediated by the continuation of existing laws and institutions. Systemic deficiencies are identified. These tended to undermine the effectiveness of direct British rule. This study also reveals, in the context of legal and constitutional continuity, unresolved tensions between modernity and tradition. The political stability of the island was damaged and the possibility of continued British possession was threatened
