    Perceptions of physiotherapists towards research: a mixed methods study

    OBJECTIVES: To explore the perceptions of physiotherapists towards the use of and participation in research. DESIGN: Concurrent mixed methods research, combining in-depth interviews with three questionnaires (demographics, Edmonton Research Orientation Survey, visual analogue scales for confidence and motivation to participate in research). SETTING: One physiotherapy department in a rehabilitation hospital, consisting of seven specialised areas. PARTICIPANTS: Twenty-five subjects {four men and 21 women, mean age 38 [standard deviation (SD) 11] years} who had been registered as a physiotherapist for a mean period of 15 (SD 10) years participated in this study. They were registered with the New Zealand Board of Physiotherapy, held a current practising certificate, and were working as a physiotherapist or physiotherapy/allied health manager at the hospital. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: The primary outcome measure was in-depth interviews and the secondary outcome measures were the three questionnaires. RESULTS: Physiotherapists were generally positive towards research, but struggled with the concept of research, the available literature and the time to commit to research. Individual confidence and orientation towards research seemed to influence how these barriers were perceived. CONCLUSION: This study showed that physiotherapists struggle to implement research in their daily practice and become involved in research. Changing physiotherapists' conceptions of research, making it more accessible and providing dedicated research time could facilitate increased involvement in the physiotherapy profession

    An investigation of the αS and heavy quark mass dependence in the MSHT20 global PDF analysis

    We investigate the MSHT20 global PDF sets, demonstrating the effects of varying the strong coupling αS(M2Z) and the masses of the charm and bottom quarks. We determine the preferred value, and accompanying uncertainties, when we allow αS(M2Z) to be a free parameter in the MSHT20 global analyses of deep-inelastic and related hard scattering data, at both NLO and NNLO in QCD perturbation theory. We also study the constraints on αS(M2Z) which come from the individual data sets in the global fit by repeating the NNLO and NLO global analyses at various fixed values of αS(M2Z), spanning the range αS(M2Z)=0.108 to 0.130 in units of 0.001. We make all resulting PDFs sets available. We find that the best fit values are αS(M2Z)=0.1203±0.0015 and 0.1174±0.0013 at NLO and NNLO respectively. We investigate the relationship between the variations in αS(M2Z) and the uncertainties on the PDFs, and illustrate this by calculating the cross sections for key processes at the LHC. We also perform fits where we allow the heavy quark masses mc and mb to vary away from their default values and make PDF sets available in steps of Δmc=0.05 GeV and Δmb=0.25 GeV, using the pole mass definition of the quark masses. As for varying αS(M2Z) values, we present the variation in the PDFs and in the predictions. We examine the comparison to data, particularly the HERA data on charm and bottom cross sections and note that our default values are very largely compatible with best fits to data. We provide PDF sets with 3 and 4 active quark flavours, as well as the standard value of 5 flavours

    Signal specific electric potential sensors for operation in noisy environments

    Limitations on the performance of electric potential sensors are due to saturation caused by environmental electromagnetic noise. The work described involves tailoring the response of the sensors to reject the main components of the noise, thereby enhancing both the effective dynamic range and signal to noise. We show that by using real-time analogue signal processing it is possible to detect a human heartbeat at a distance of 40 cm from the front of a subject in an unshielded laboratory. This result has significant implications both for security sensing and biometric measurements in addition to the more obvious safety related applications

    Approximate N3^{3}LO Parton Distribution Functions with Theoretical Uncertainties: MSHT20aN3^3LO PDFs

    We present the first global analysis of parton distribution functions (PDFs) at approximate N3^{3}LO in the strong coupling constant αs\alpha_{s}, extending beyond the current highest NNLO achieved in PDF fits. To achieve this, we present a general formalism for the inclusion of theoretical uncertainties from missing higher orders (MHOs) into a PDF fit. We demonstrate how using the currently available knowledge surrounding the next highest order (N3^{3}LO) in αs\alpha_{s} can provide consistent, justifiable and explainable approximate N3^{3}LO (aN3^{3}LO) PDFs, including estimates for missing higher order uncertainties (MHOUs). Specifically, we approximate the splitting functions, transition matrix elements, coefficient functions and KK-factors for multiple processes to N3^{3}LO. Crucially, these are constrained to be consistent with the wide range of already available information about N3^{3}LO to match the complete result at this order as accurately as possible. Using this approach we perform a fully consistent approximate N3^{3}LO global fit within the MSHT framework. This relies on an expansion of the Hessian procedure used in previous MSHT fits to allow for sources of theoretical uncertainties. These are included as nuisance parameters in a global fit, controlled by knowledge and intuition based prior distributions. We analyse the differences between our aN3^{3}LO PDFs and the standard NNLO PDF set, and study the impact of using aN3^{3}LO PDFs on the LHC production of a Higgs boson at this order. Finally, we provide guidelines on how these PDFs should be be used in phenomenological investigations.Comment: 150 pages, 48 figures, 20 tables.
