Choosing a calcium supplement for sheep fed cereal grains

    Get PDF
Sheep fed cereal grains as an energy source over summer usually need added calcium because cereal grains are generally low in calcium (for example, 0.03 per cent calcium compared to 0.26 per cent phosphorus), and there may not be a natural source such as clover, weeds, leafy stubble or edible bush in the paddock. The safestt and most effective calcium supplement is finely ground limestone added to the feed, but some farmers have used other sources of calcium such as gypsum and superphosphate in this manner

Interactions of LC8 with N-Terminal Segments of the Intermediate Chain of Cytoplasmic Dynein

LC8, a highly conserved 10-kDa light chain, and IC74, a 74-kDa intermediate chain, are presumed to promote the assembly of the cytoplasmic dynein motor protein complex and to be engaged in the controlled binding and release of cargo. The interactions of LC8 from Drosophila melanogaster with constructs of IC74 were characterized in vitro by affinity methods, limited proteolysis, and circular dichroism spectroscopy. Previously, we have performed limited proteolysis on the N-terminal domain of IC74, IC(1-289), when free and when bound to dynein light chains LC8 and Tctex-1[1]. We have also shown that upon addition of LC8, IC(1-289) undergoes a significant conformational change from a largely unfolded to a more ordered structure. The purpose of the work presented here is to determine whether residues 1-30 in IC74, predicted to be in a coiled coil, are involved in the stabilization of the protein upon binding to LC8. Constructs of IC74, IC(1-143), and IC(30-143) that include the LC8 binding site but with and without the first 30 residues were prepared, and their binding and protection patterns were compared to our previous results for IC(1-289). The results suggest that coiled coil residues 1-30 are not responsible for the increase in structure we observe when IC(1-289) binds to LC8

Maximizing construction of timber kit homes using telescopic crane to improve efficiency and safety: a case study

The challenges of improving efficiency and safety is a daunting task as workers are squeezed with an ever-dwindling resource pool and yet expected to deliver construction projects at optimum capacity. Improving efficiency and safety using telescopic cranes for the construction of Off-Site Manufacturing (OSM) timber kit homes is a viable option for the speedy delivery of new homes. An action research evaluated the maximization of the build and process efficiency and safety using a crane to erect wall panels, floors, and roofs. Data collection through direct observation assessed the labor uptime and downtime, including crane usage. A balanced score card was used by management for strategic organizational decision-making regarding the crane erection. The use of the crane reduced workplace manual handling of OSM panels, minimized the exposure of operatives to work at height risks, and eliminated alterations to scaffolds. However, the manual loading of thermal-insulated plasterboards to floor decks impacted the process efficiency and speed of installing the fixtures and increased the risk of musculoskeletal disorders. High labor downtimes were associated with the adverse weather conditions, which slowed the efficiency of the workforce during construction. The management’s inability to adequately plan the work program further hindered aspects of lifting operations and the speed and number of houses built
