    Growing food in Space: A Comparison of LED and Solar-Fiber-Optic Technologies

    Growing food on Mars for long-term space exploration has many benefits including reduced fuel and cost requirements for lift-off, improved nutrition and psychological benefits for astronauts, air purification, and oxygen and water regeneration. However, complications are caused by the thin atmosphere on Mars, which would force production underground or into a heavily armored shelter. Providing the massive number of photons necessary to grow food is expensive and careful consideration must be made regarding the most promising technologies. The two most promising options are a combination of either concentrating mirrors coupled to solar-fiber-optics (SFO), or photovoltaics (PV) coupled to light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Here we discuss the efficiency, equivalent system mass, and photobiological potential of both systems. Recent advances in PV and LEDs mean that they have caught up to SFO technology and now appear to be the superior technology

    Patch-scale representation of vegetation within hydraulic models

    Submerged aquatic vegetation affects flow, sediment and ecological processes within rivers. Quantifying these effects is key to effective river management. Despite a wealth of research into vegetated flows, the detailed flow characteristics around real plants in natural channels are still poorly understood. Here we present a new methodology for representing vegetation patches within computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models of vegetated channels. Vegetation is represented using a Mass Flux Scaling Algorithm (MFSA) and drag term within the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes Equations, which account for the mass and momentum effects of the vegetation respectively. The model is applied using three different grid resolutions (0.2, 0.1 & 0.05 m) using time-averaged solution methods and compared to field data. The results show that the model reproduces the complex spatial flow heterogeneity within the channel and that increasing the resolution leads to enhanced model accuracy. Future applications of the model to the prediction of channel roughness, sedimentation and key eco-hydraulic variables are presented, likely to be valuable for informing effective river management

    Patient-Centered Outcomes From Multiparametric MRI and MRI-Guided Biopsy for Prostate Cancer: A Systematic Review.

    OBJECTIVE: To identify and characterize patient-centered outcomes (PCOs) relating to multiparametric MRI (mpMRI) and MRI-guided biopsy as diagnostic tests for possible prostate cancer. METHODS: Medline via OVID, EMBASE, PsycInfo, and the Cochrane Central register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) were searched for relevant articles. Hand searching of reference lists and snowballing techniques were performed. Studies of mpMRI and MRI-guided biopsy that measured any PCO were included. There were no restrictions placed on year of publication, language, or country for study inclusion. All database search hits were screened independently by two reviewers, and data were extracted using a standardized form. RESULTS: Overall, 2,762 database search hits were screened based on title and abstract. Of these, 222 full-text articles were assessed, and 10 studies met the inclusion criteria. There were 2,192 participants featured in the included studies, all of which were conducted in high-income countries. Nineteen different PCOs were measured, with a median of four PCOs per study (range 1-11). Urethral bleeding, pain, and urinary tract infection were the most common outcomes measured. In the four studies that compared mpMRI or MRI-guided biopsy to transrectal ultrasound biopsy, most adverse outcomes occurred less frequently in MRI-related tests. These four studies were assessed as having a low risk of bias. DISCUSSION: PCOs measured in studies of mpMRI or MRI-guided biopsy thus far have mostly been physical outcomes, with some evidence that MRI tests are associated with less frequent adverse outcomes compared with transrectal ultrasound biopsy. There was very little evidence for the effect of mpMRI and MRI-guided biopsy on emotional, cognitive, social, or behavioral outcomes

    Anthropometric and physiological factors affecting batted ball speed of adolescent baseball players

    Fifty-seven junior baseball players performed eight swings off a tee to record ball exit speed, as well as tests of grip strength, standing broad jump, lateral-to-medial (LM) jumps, chin-ups and chest pass with a medicine ball. The height, weight and age of each participant was also recorded. All anthropometric and physiological tests were significantly positively correlated with ball speed (p \u3c 0.05). Collinearity between variables meant that only chest pass (R² = 0.70, p = 0.000), body mass (ΔR² = 0.03, Δp = 0.021) and LM jump (ΔR² = 0.04, Δp = 0.005) made independent contributions to a stepwise linear regression. These findings corroborate the expectation that upper body power is a major determinant of batting speed, with leg power adding an additional, independent contribution to performance

    A Preliminary Assessment of Mental Health Needs Faced in Religious Leaders in Eastern Europe

    Enormous sociopolitical changes in Eastern Europe in the last decade have had a profound impact on the psychological functioning of the citizens of these nations. In order to assess and intervene in the mental health realm in Eastern Europe, a brief survey was sent to various Christian leaders in Eastern Europe. Common mental health problems identified across the various Eastern European countries and cultures include depression, relationship difficulties, alcohol abuse, and anxiety disorders. Christians in Eastern Europe tend to turn to family and friends for help with these problems first, pastors second, and almost never to mental health professionals. Clergy and laypersons have little training in mental health issues. A promising direction for future service is training those who can, in turn, train Eastern European laypersons in basic listening and support skills. Cultural awareness and sensitivity will be of paramount importance in such an endeavor

    Elements of attention in HIV-infected adults: Evaluation of an existing model

    Because of the multifactorial nature of neuropsychological tests, attention remains poorly defined from a neuropsychological perspective, and conclusions made regarding attention across studies may be limited due to the different nature of the measures used. Thus, a more definitive schema for this neurocognitive domain is needed. We assessed the applicability of Mirsky and Duncan\u27s (2001) neuropsychological model of attention to a cohort of 104 HIV+ adults. Our analysis resulted in a five-factor structure similar to that of previous studies, which explained 74.5% of the variance. However, based on the psychometric characteristics of the measures comprising each factor, we offer an alternative interpretation of the factors. Findings also indicate that one factor, which is generally not assessed in clinical neuropsychology settings, may be more predictive of real-world behaviors (such as medication adherence) than those composed of traditional measures. Suggestions for further research in this important area are discussed

    Financing Community Energy Case Studies : Brighton and Hove Energy Services (BHESCo)

    This report presents the final of four case studies of UK community energy organisations conducted during 2018/19, which will later be included as part of a synthesis briefing alongside a series of sector-level interviews. The case study makes use of a combination of qualitative (e.g. interviews, organisation reports) and quantitative (e.g. financial reports) data. Summary of key lessons includes: Energy efficiency and heating services can constitute a core offering of community groups. Unlike many other community organisations, BHESCo has been able to develop a compelling value proposition, centred on delivering affordable comfort and warmth, through a combination of efficiency and generation measures. By employing a Pay As You Save model, it has unlocked a previously untapped revenue stream for communities, which importantly is less reliant on generation subsidies such as the Feed-in-Tariff (FiT). However, we find the model is limited in its ability to assist the fuel poor, who cannot be expected to share any cost savings generated, and tenants of rented properties where landlords are uninterested in investing in energy savings. Financing a serviced based model presents uncommon challenges in the community energy sector. Compared with other community energy groups, BHESCo’s investors must consider higher operating costs, on-going capital needs and a more complex offering, based on its business model rather than a singular asset. However, BHESCo has negotiated these challenges deftly and is open to alternative approaches, involving blended finance and working in consortia, as it explores potential larger scale projects. The complexity of BHESCo’s business model presents both advantages and disadvantages. On the one hand, its relative complexity makes the venture less dependent on any single technology, customer, revenue stream or subsidy (such as the FiT), versus most other community energy groups. This helps to insulate the organisation from market and policy shocks. On the other hand, the complexity of BHESCo’s business model and the novelty of its proposition mean it has taken time to mature as a venture. For a time, it relied strongly on grants and the commitment of its key founder and CEO. The adoption of the bona fide co-operative legal structure stems from both financial and ethical considerations. A co-operative model was adopted largely as a means of raising relatively low cost community shares. This was largely a reaction to a lack of affordable finance being offered to community-led energy efficiency oriented businesses like BHESCo, even from ethical investors. Beyond finance, the co-op model was also selected on ethical grounds. Specifically, the cooperative model's 'one shareholder-one vote' model provides a broader distribution of power versus the 'one share-one vote' model employed by companies limited by shares. Furthermore, the absence of an asset lock provides its citizen investors with the option that assets can be liquidated to pay back their investment

    Mechanical properties of α-tricalcium phosphate-based bone cements incorporating regenerative biomaterials for filling bone defects exposed to low mechanical loads

    Calcium phosphate-based cements with enhanced regenerative potential are promising biomaterials for the healing of bone defects. With a view to the use of such cements for low load bearing applications such as sinus augmentation or filling extraction sites, we have prepared α-tricalcium phosphate (α-TCP)-based bone cements including materials that we would expect to improve their regenerative potential, and describe the mechanical properities of the resulting formulations herein. Formulations incorporated α-TCP, hydroxyapatite, biopolymer-thickened wetting agents, sutures, and platelet poor plasma. The mechanical properties of the composites were composition dependent, and optimized formulations had clinically relevant mechanical properties. Such calcium phosphate-based cements have potential as replacements for cements such as those based on polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA)

    Transit and Eclipse Analyses of Exoplanet HD 149026b Using BLISS Mapping

    The dayside of HD 149026b is near the edge of detectability by the Spitzer Space Telescope. We report on eleven secondary-eclipse events at 3.6, 4.5, 3 x 5.8, 4 x 8.0, and 2 x 16 microns plus three primary-transit events at 8.0 microns. The eclipse depths from jointly-fit models at each wavelength are 0.040 +/- 0.003% at 3.6 microns, 0.034 +/- 0.006% at 4.5 microns, 0.044 +/- 0.010% at 5.8 microns, 0.052 +/- 0.006% at 8.0 microns, and 0.085 +/- 0.032% at 16 microns. Multiple observations at the longer wavelengths improved eclipse-depth signal-to-noise ratios by up to a factor of two and improved estimates of the planet-to-star radius ratio (Rp/Rs = 0.0518 +/- 0.0006). We also identify no significant deviations from a circular orbit and, using this model, report an improved period of 2.8758916 +/- 0.0000014 days. Chemical-equilibrium models find no indication of a temperature inversion in the dayside atmosphere of HD 149026b. Our best-fit model favors large amounts of CO and CO2, moderate heat redistribution (f=0.5), and a strongly enhanced metallicity. These analyses use BiLinearly-Interpolated Subpixel Sensitivity (BLISS) mapping, a new technique to model two position-dependent systematics (intrapixel variability and pixelation) by mapping the pixel surface at high resolution. BLISS mapping outperforms previous methods in both speed and goodness of fit. We also present an orthogonalization technique for linearly-correlated parameters that accelerates the convergence of Markov chains that employ the Metropolis random walk sampler.
