    Peroxisome biogenesis in Hansenula polymorpha: different mutations in genes, essential for peroxisome biogenesis, cause different peroxisomal mutant phenotypes

    In Hansenula polymorpha, different monogenic recessive mutations mapped in either of two previously identified genes, PER1 and PER3, produced different peroxisomal mutant phenotypes. Among five per1 mutants, four showed a Pim- phenotype: the cells contained few small peroxisomes while the bulk of the matrix enzymes resided in the cytosol. One of these mutants, per1-124 had an enhanced rate of peroxisome proliferation. The fifth mutant completely lacked peroxisomes (Per- phenotype). Of seven per3 mutants, four displayed a Pim- phenotype, two others a Per- phenotype, while one mutant showed pH-dependent growth on methanol and was affected in oligomerization of peroxisomal matrix protein. Thus, the protein products of both PER1 and PER3 genes appear to be essential in different aspects of peroxisome assembly/proliferation.

    Direct amplitude modulation of short-cavity GaAs lasers up to X-band frequencies

    Experimental and theoretical studies indicate that a high-frequency laser with bandwidths up to X-band frequencies (~> 10 GHz) should be one having a short cavity with a window structure, and preferably operating at low temperatures. These designs would accomplish the task of shortening the photon lifetime, increasing the intrinsic optical gain, and increasing the internal photon density without inflicting mirror damage. A modulation bandwidth of >8 GHz has been achieved using a 120-µm laser without any special window structure at room temperature

    Superluminescent damping of relaxation resonance in the modulation response of GaAs lasers

    It is demonstrated experimentally that the intrinsic modulation response of injection lasers can be modified by reducing mirror reflectivities, which leads to suppression of relaxation oscillation resonance and a reduction of nonlinear distortions up to multi-GHz frequencies. A totally flat response with a 3-dB bandwidth of 5 GHz was obtained using antireflection coated buried heterostructure lasers fabricated on a semi-insulating substrate. Harmonic distortions were below 40 dB within the entire 3-dB bandwidth. These results are in accord with theoretical predictions based on an analysis which include the effects of superluminescence in the laser cavity

    Monolithic integration of a GaAlAs buried-heterostructure laser and a bipolar phototransistor

    A GaAlAs buried-heterostructure laser has been monolithically integrated with a bipolar phototransistor. The heterojunction transistor was formed by the regrowth of the burying layers of the laser. Typical threshold current values for the lasers were 30 mA. Common-emitter current gains for the phototransistor of 100–400 and light responsivity of 75 A/W (for wavelengths of 0.82 µm) at collector current levels of 15 mA were obtained

    Radiation-driven rotational motion of nanoparticles

    Focused synchrotron beams can influence a studied sample via heating, or radiation pressure effects due to intensity gradients. The high angular sensitivity of rotational X-ray tracking of crystalline particles via their Bragg reflections can detect extremely small forces such as those caused by field gradients. By tracking the rotational motion of single-crystal nanoparticles embedded in a viscous or viscoelastic medium, the effects of heating in a uniform gradient beam and radiation pressure in a Gaussian profile beam were observed. Changes in viscosity due to X-ray heating were measured for 42 µm crystals in glycerol, and angular velocities of 10-6 rad s-1 due to torques of 10-24 N m were measured for 340 nm crystals in a colloidal gel matrix. These results show the ability to quantify small forces using rotation motion of tracer particles

    Probe-diverse ptythography

    We propose an extension of ptychography where the target sample is scanned separately through several probes with distinct amplitude and phase profiles and a diffraction image is recorded for each probe and each sample translation. The resulting probe-diverse dataset is used to iteratively retrieve high-resolution images of the sample and all probes simultaneously. The method is shown to yield significant improvement in the reconstructed sample image compared to the image obtained using the standard single-probe ptychographic phase-retrieval scheme

    Stellenwert der endoskopischen Axilladissektion beim invasiven Mammakarzinom

    Zusammenfassung: Grundlagen: Die Axilladissektion liefert zuverlässige prognostische Information, bestimmt mehrheitlich die adjuvante Therapie und reduziert die axillären Tumorrezidive. Die Morbidität nach Axilladissektion kann jedoch nicht vernachlässigt werden (sensible Störungen, Schmerzen, motorische Schwäche, Lymphödem). Patientinnen mit kleinen Tumoren (pT1a, b, c) könnten von neueren weniger invasiven Verfahren (endoskopische Axilladissektion) oder von selektiveren Methoden (Sentinel-lymph-node-Procedere) profitieren. In dieser prospektiven Studie wurde die axilloskopische Lymphadenektomie evaluiert. Methodik: 55 klinisch nodal negative Patientinnen (Durchschnittsalter: 60 Jahre [30 bis 86 Jahre]) wurden von einem Chirurgen endoskopisch operiert (Januar 1996 bis Juni 1998). Nach Liposuktion des axillären Fettkörpers wurden die Lymphknoten von Level I+II identifiziert und unter direkter endoskopischer Sicht reseziert (erfolgreiches Verfahren in 95 %: n=52). Die Patientinnen wurden entsprechend dem Nachsorgeschema alle 4 Monate kontrolliert. Nach einer mittleren Beobachtungszeit von 22 Monaten (7 bis 37 Monate; n=51 [eine Patientin verweigerte die Nachsorge]) wurden die Patientinnen mit einem Evaluationsfragebogen, einem Interview und einer klinischen Untersuchung (inklusiv Schultergelenksfunktion, Zirkumferenzmessungen der oberen Extremität) nachkontrolliert. Ergebnisse: Durchschnittlich wurden 13,3 (5 bis 25) Lymphknoten endoskopisch entfernt. Nodal positive Lymphknoten wurden in 31 % (n=16) beobachtet. Der Durchschnittswert der positiven Lymphknoten/Patientin betrug 3,1 (1 bis 10). Acht Serome (15 %) mußten in der frühpostoperativen Phase punktiert werden. Es traten keine Hämatome, jedoch ein Infekt in der Axilla nach Chemotherapie auf (2 %). Nach einer mittleren Beobachtungszeit von 22 Monaten (7 bis 37 Monate) konnten keine axillären Rezidive nachgewiesen werden. Eine subkutane Implantationsmetastase in der Narbe eines Trokarkanals (1/55, 2 %) wurde diagnostiziert und reseziert. Klinisch traten keine Lymphödeme auf. Die frühe Mobilisation des Schultergelenkes war subjektiv und objektiv gut. Schlußfolgerungen: Die durchschnittlich 13 axilloskopisch entfernten Lymphknoten entsprechen der Anzahl resezierter Lymphknoten bei offener Axilladissektion. Die Morbidität dieses in Evaluation begriffenen Verfahrens ist niedrig. Nach einer mittleren Beobachtungszeit von 22 Monaten wurde ein Implantationsrezidiv im subkutanen Kanal des anterioren Arbeitstrokar nachgewiesen. Eine längere Beobachtungszeit ist nötig, um die Technik empfehlen zu können.     A Bivariate Measure of Redundant Information

    We define a measure of redundant information based on projections in the space of probability distributions. Redundant information between random variables is information that is shared between those variables. But in contrast to mutual information, redundant information denotes information that is shared about the outcome of a third variable. Formalizing this concept, and being able to measure it, is required for the non-negative decomposition of mutual information into redundant and synergistic information. Previous attempts to formalize redundant or synergistic information struggle to capture some desired properties. We introduce a new formalism for redundant information and prove that it satisfies all the properties necessary outlined in earlier work, as well as an additional criterion that we propose to be necessary to capture redundancy. We also demonstrate the behaviour of this new measure for several examples, compare it to previous measures and apply it to the decomposition of transfer entropy.Comment: 16 pages, 15 figures, 1 table, added citation to Griffith et al 2012, Maurer et al 199
