MANAGING THE CORN ROOTWORM VARIANT: EMPIRICAL RESULTS FROM AN INDIANA FARMER SURVEY

    Get PDF
The emergence of a corn rootworm "variant" has reduced the effectiveness of a corn-soybean rotation in some areas of Indiana. This research identifies potential control alternatives. Empirical results suggest that younger, more educated managers of larger farms would be the most likely to adopt transgenic corn for rootworm control.areawide pest management, corn rootworms, technology adoption, transgenic corn, Crop Production/Industries,

Results from a random telephone survey of households in 13 southern states suggest that 80 percent of respondents use labels when making food purchasing decisions. Label users are more likely to be college-educated, female, living in the East South Central Region, and to be childless or to have children between the ages of five and twelve. Age is invariant to label use; however, older respondents are more likely to assign higher importance ratings to caloric, fat, sodium, and cholesterol content than to price, expiration date, and brand when buying fresh-fluid milk.Agribusiness,

An Assessment of the Effect of Competition on Rail Rates for Export Corn, Soybean, and Wheat Shipments

    No full text
Competition among railroads for corn, soybean, and wheat shipments appears to be decreasing in the United States. Any reduction in competitive transport options for export shippers is cause for concern. The results of this research indicate that decreases in competition raise rail rates for export shipments of grain

Examining a Paradox: Obesity and Food-Stamp Participation in Louisiana

Chi-square analyses suggest that a number of individual variables can be good indicators of obesity, including race, income, the presence of children in the household, education, opinions about fat intake, and food-stamp participation. Although chi-square analyses suggest an increased likelihood of reporting food-stamp-program participation among obese primary grocery shoppers in Louisiana, preliminary multivariate results indicate that direct causality is not necessarily supported

An Examination of Consumers' Rankings of the Dietary Recommendations

    No full text
The results suggest that when given the opportunity to assign importance rankings to nine dietary recommendations, consumers rank the recommendation for daily intake of fruits and vegetables the highest. Additionally, the ranking for fruit and vegetable intake is uniform for all three racial groups: Caucasians, African-Americans, and other races. However, about 69 percent of the 1,300 consumers agree or strongly agree that there are so many dietary recommendations about healthy ways to eat that it is hard to know what to believe
