The Importance of Evaluating the Syntactic Complexity of Instructional Material
One of the many problems facing educators involved in instructional programming is how to tell whether a given piece of material is likely to be readable to an individual child
Auditory Closure and Reading
In contrast with visual perception, about which there is a larger body of knowledge, relatively little information exists concerning auditory perception and its relationship to reading. This fact is both surprising and troublesome as several researchers have found that auditory perceptual measures are better predictors of reading achievement than are visual perceptual measures (Blank, 1968; Linder & Fillmer, 1970; Muehl and Kremenak, 1966). It has been widely assumed that some basal level of auditory skill is related to normal language acquisition, school readiness, and academic achievement, particularly reading. Various auditory perceptual processes have been described, including the processes of discrimination, memory, synthesis (sound blending), and analysis (closure)
Perceptual and Perceptual-Motor Test Scores are Not a Clue to Reading Achievement in Second Graders
The research findings reviewed in this article suggest that the reason poor readers may not benefit from perceptual training programs may be that they already possess the very skills educators are attempting to develop, and do not need this training. The present study attempts to further clarify this issue by determining whether children who are achieving at various reading levels score differently on perceptual and perceptual-motor tasks
Are Perceptual Skills Necessary for Success in Reading? Which Ones?
Numerous reading and reading readiness programs have been made available to teachers over the years, constructed on the assumption that certain auditory and visual perceptual skills are prerequisites to successful achievement in academics, particularly reading. Many educators have suggested that children who have been labeled learning or reading disabled demonstrate deficits at the perceptual level. In fact, many of those who have been instrumental in the field of learning disabilities have suggested that all learning disabled children have perceptual processing problems and that these perceptual problems are at the root of their learning disabilities (Barsch 1965; Cruickshank, 1977; Frostig, 1970; Getman, 1965; Kephart, 1960; Wepman, 1974)
House Biermann in Durban: A Case of “Regional Vernacular” in the Modern Architectural Heritage of South Africa
In September 2020, the South African Institute of Architects KwaZulu-Natal Regional Heritage Committee launched an urgent national and international appeal to support the preservation of an important architectural artifact: the house of Barrie Biermann in Durban. The building, considered the most significant project carried out by the South African architect and academic, is today in danger of being demolished. Built in 1962 with great economy in the residential district of Westridge, it represents Biermann's particular vision of modern architecture and was a compelling experiment in domestic space. The present article reconstructs, through a selection of archival materials and pictures from the Technical Reference Library (University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban), the context and design ideas of the project and some construction features. These aspects, in particular related to Biermann's architectural vision and references, highlight the vital need to protect this heritage of modern architecture in the context of South Africa

Schooling for violence and peace : how does peace education differ from ‘normal’ schooling?
This article reviews literature on the roles of schooling in both reproducing and actively perpetrating violence, and sets out an historical explanation of why schools are socially constructed in such a way as to make these roles possible. It then discusses notions of peace education in relation to one particular project in England before using empirical data from research on the project to examine contrasts between peace education approaches and ‘normal’ schooling from the viewpoints of project workers, pupils and teachers. It concludes that such contrasts and tensions do indeed exist and that this raises serious questions about the compatibility of peace education and formal schooling
