Increased Hematopoietic Extracellular RNAs and Vesicles in the Lung during Allergic Airway Responses.
Extracellular RNAs (exRNAs) can be released by numerous cell types in vitro, are often protected within vesicles, and can modify recipient cell function. To determine how the composition and cellular sources of exRNAs and the extracellular vesicles (EVs) that carry them change in vivo during tissue inflammation, we analyzed bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) from mice before and after lung allergen challenge. In the lung, extracellular microRNAs (ex-miRNAs) had a composition that was highly correlated with airway-lining epithelium. Using cell type-specific membrane tagging and single vesicle flow, we also found that 80% of detected vesicles were of epithelial origin. After the induction of allergic airway inflammation, miRNAs selectively expressed by immune cells, including miR-223 and miR-142a, increased and hematopoietic-cell-derived EVs also increased >2-fold. These data demonstrate that infiltrating immune cells release ex-miRNAs and EVs in inflamed tissues to alter the local extracellular environment
MicroRNA regulation of type 2 innate lymphoid cell homeostasis and function in allergic inflammation.
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) exert powerful effects on immunity through coordinate regulation of multiple target genes in a wide variety of cells. Type 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s) are tissue sentinel mediators of allergic inflammation. We established the physiological requirements for miRNAs in ILC2 homeostasis and immune function and compared the global miRNA repertoire of resting and activated ILC2s and T helper type 2 (TH2) cells. After exposure to the natural allergen papain, mice selectively lacking the miR-17∼92 cluster in ILC2s displayed reduced lung inflammation. Moreover, miR-17∼92-deficient ILC2s exhibited defective growth and cytokine expression in response to IL-33 and thymic stromal lymphopoietin in vitro. The miR-17∼92 cluster member miR-19a promoted IL-13 and IL-5 production and inhibited expression of several targets, including SOCS1 and A20, signaling inhibitors that limit IL-13 and IL-5 production. These findings establish miRNAs as important regulators of ILC2 biology, reveal overlapping but nonidentical miRNA-regulated gene expression networks in ILC2s and TH2 cells, and reinforce the therapeutic potential of targeting miR-19 to alleviate pathogenic allergic responses
Photoluminescence and photoluminescence excitation studies of lateral size effects in Zn_{1-x}Mn_xSe/ZnSe quantum disc samples of different radii
Quantum disc structures (with diameters of 200 nm and 100 nm) were prepared
from a Zn_{0.72}Mn_{0.28}Se/ZnSe single quantum well structure by electron beam
lithography followed by an etching procedure which combined dry and wet etching
techniques. The quantum disc structures and the parent structure were studied
by photoluminescence and photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy. For the
light-hole excitons in the quantum well region, shifts of the energy positions
are observed following fabrication of the discs, confirming that strain
relaxation occurs in the pillars. The light-hole exciton lines also sharpen
following disc fabrication: this is due to an interplay between strain effects
(related to dislocations) and the lateral size of the discs. A further
consequence of the small lateral sizes of the discs is that the intensity of
the donor-bound exciton emission from the disc is found to decrease with the
disc radius. These size-related effects occur before the disc radius is reduced
to dimensions necessary for lateral quantum confinement to occur but will
remain important when the discs are made small enough to be considered as

Dynamic Energy Management
We present a unified method, based on convex optimization, for managing the
power produced and consumed by a network of devices over time. We start with
the simple setting of optimizing power flows in a static network, and then
proceed to the case of optimizing dynamic power flows, i.e., power flows that
change with time over a horizon. We leverage this to develop a real-time
control strategy, model predictive control, which at each time step solves a
dynamic power flow optimization problem, using forecasts of future quantities
such as demands, capacities, or prices, to choose the current power flow
values. Finally, we consider a useful extension of model predictive control
that explicitly accounts for uncertainty in the forecasts. We mirror our
framework with an object-oriented software implementation, an open-source
Python library for planning and controlling power flows at any scale. We
demonstrate our method with various examples. Appendices give more detail about

SSI-AWARE: Self-Sovereign Identity Authenticated backup With Auditing by Remote Entities
Part 5: CybersecurityInternational audienceThe self-sovereign identity (SSI) model entails the full responsibility and sovereignty of a user regarding his identity data. This identity data can contain private data which is solely known to the user. The user himself is therefore required to manage the whole lifecycle of his private data, including the backup and restore. We show that prior work on how to backup and restore the user’s identity data does not meet the requirements of the SSI setting, and we present the first solution which does meet the requirements. Authenticated backup with auditing by remote entities (AWARE) combines SSI sustaining aspects and extends them to create a truly self-sovereign backup-and-restore protocol. In AWARE, trusted, physically met humans, called custodians, hold a secure device. Custodians with a secure device offer an offline backup possibility and a secure channel. The backup and restore are audited by commits on a publicly accessible distributed ledger. These commits are answered by auditing services which are required during restore. Only some auditing services hold relevant data for a restore. The self sovereignty of the user lies in the exclusive information which auditing services hold relevant data. AWARE is the first backup-and-restore mechanism that fully complies with the SSI model. We perform an in-depth security-risk analysis of AWARE, showing a risk rating which is comparable to the best risk rating o related non-SSI-compliant backup-and-restore mechanisms. We instantiate the AWARE protocol with cryptographic primitives providing a high security level of 256-bit. We show its implementation feasibility by providing a simulation of AWARE, and conclude with an estimated performance analysis on a microcontoller architecture based on our simulation and implementation results in the literature
Resection of the liver for colorectal carcinoma metastases - A multi-institutional study of long-term survivors
In this review of a collected series of patients undergoing hepatic resection for colorectal metastases, 100 patients were found to have survived greater than five years from the time of resection. Of these 100 long-term survivors, 71 remain disease-free through the last follow-up, 19 recurred prior to five years, and ten recurred after five years. Patient characteristics that may have contributed to survival were examined. Procedures performed included five trisegmentectomies, 32 lobectomies, 16 left lateral segmentectomies, and 45 wedge resections. The margin of resection was recorded in 27 patients, one of whom had a positive margin, nine of whom had a less than or equal to 1-cm margin, and 17 of whom had a greater than 1-cm margin. Eighty-one patients had a solitary metastasis to the liver, 11 patients had two metastases, one patient had three metastases, and four patients had four metastases. Thirty patients had Stage C primary carcinoma, 40 had Stage B primary carcinoma, and one had Stage A primarycarcinoma. The disease-free interval from the time of colon resection to the time of liver resection was less than one year in 65 patients, and greater than one year in 34 patients. Three patients had bilobar metastases. Four of the patients had extrahepatic disease resected simultaneously with the liver resection. Though several contraindications to hepatic resection have been proposed in the past, five-year survival has been found in patients with extrahepatic disease resected simultaneously, patients with bilobar metastases, patients with multiple metastases, and patients with positive margins. Five-year disease-free survivors are also present in each of these subsets. It is concluded that five-year survival is possible in the presence of reported contraindications to resection, and therefore that the decision to resect the liver must be individualized. © 1988 American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons
Cymantrene–Triazole "Click" Products: Structural Characterization and Electrochemical Properties
We report the first known examples of triazole-derivatized cymantrene complexes (η5-[4-substituted triazol-1-yl]cyclopentadienyl)tricarbonylmanganese(I), obtained via a “click” chemical synthesis, bearing a phenyl, 3-aminophenyl, or 4-aminophenyl moiety at the 4-position of the triazole ring. Structural characterization data using multinuclear NMR, UV–vis, ATR-IR, and mass spectrometric methods are provided, as well as crystallographic data for (η5-[4-phenyltriazol-1-yl]cyclopentadienyl)tricarbonylmanganese(I) and (η5-[4-(3-aminophenyl)triazol-1-yl]cyclopentadienyl)tricarbonylmanganese(I). Cyclic voltammetric characterization of the redox behavior of each of the three cymantrene–triazole complexes is presented together with digital simulations, in situ infrared spectroelectrochemistry, and DFT calculations to extract the associated kinetic and thermodynamic parameters. The trypanocidal activity of each cymantrene–triazole complex is also examined, and these complexes are found to be more active than cymantrene alone
Evidence of Combat in Triceratops
Background: The horns and frill of Triceratops and other ceratopsids (horned dinosaurs) are interpreted variously as display structures or as weapons against conspecifics and predators. Lesions (in the form of periosteal reactive bone, healing fractures, and alleged punctures) on Triceratops skulls have been used as anecdotal support of intraspecific combat similar to that in modern horned and antlered animals. If ceratopsids with different cranial morphologies used their horns in such combat, this should be reflected in the rates of lesion occurrence across the skull. Methodology/Principal Findings: We used a G-test of independence to compare incidence rates of lesions in Triceratops (which possesses two large brow horns and a smaller nasal horn) and the related ceratopsid Centrosaurus (with a large nasal horn and small brow horns), for the nasal, jugal, squamosal, and parietal bones of the skull. The two taxa differ significantly in the occurrence of lesions on the squamosal bone of the frill (P = 0.002), but not in other cranial bones (P.0.20). Conclusions/Significance: This pattern is consistent with Triceratops using its horns in combat and the frill being adapted as a protective structure for this taxon.
