    Does the Response of Insect Herbivores to Cadmium Depend on Their Feeding Strategy?

    Phytoremediation has been proposed for the elimination of toxic metals in soil, yet little attention has been given to the performance of insects that feed on contaminant-tolerant plants. We tested the performance of two herbivores with different feeding behaviors, the cabbage looper, Trichoplusia ni, and the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae, reared on cadmium-tolerant Brassica juncea plants that contained different concentrations of cadmium. We also tested the performance of the aphid parasitoid Aphidius colemani developing in aphids reared on plants with different levels of cadmium. The hypothesis tested was that the chewing insect would be more negatively affected than the sucking insect, because of the localization of cadmium within the host plant, and that the aphid parasitoid would not be affected. We also compared the performance of T. ni on artificial diet with different levels of cadmium. Neither the phloem-feeding aphid nor its parasitoid was affected by cadmium in the host plant. The effects of cadmium on the foliage-feeding cabbage looper varied, with negative effects on development observed in experiments with artificial diet but not in those using natural host plants. These data, together with information available in the literature, support the idea that the effects of toxic metals present in a host plant may be influenced by a herbivore’s feeding strategy. However, a wide range of chewing and sucking species needs to be tested to confirm this hypothesis

    Repression of RNA Polymerase II Transcription by a Drosophila Oligopeptide

    Background: Germline progenitors resist signals that promote differentiation into somatic cells. This occurs through the transient repression in primordial germ cells of RNA polymerase II, specifically by disrupting Ser2 phosphorylation on its C-terminal domain. Methodology/Principal Findings: Here we show that contrary to expectation the Drosophila polar granule component (pgc) gene functions as a protein rather than a non-coding RNA. Surprisingly, pgc encodes a 71-residue, dimeric, alphahelical oligopeptide repressor. In vivo data show that Pgc ablates Ser2 phosphorylation of the RNA polymerase II C-terminal domain and completely suppresses early zygotic transcription in the soma. Conclusions/Significance: We thus identify pgc as a novel oligopeptide that readily inhibits gene expression. Germ cell repression of transcription in Drosophila is thus catalyzed by a small inhibitor protein

    Quasi-molecular and atomic phases of dense solid hydrogen

    The high-pressure phases of solid hydrogen are of fundamental interest and relevant to the interior of giant planets; however, knowledge of these phases is far from complete. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) techniques were applied to a structural search, yielding hitherto unexpected high-pressure phases of solid hydrogen at pressures up to 5 TPa. An exotic quasi-molecular mC24 structure (space group C2/c, stable at 0.47-0.59 TPa) with two types of intramolecular bonds was predicted, providing a deeper understanding of molecular dissociation in solid hydrogen, which has been a mystery for decades. We further predicted the existence of two atomic phases: (i) the oC12 structure (space group Cmcm, stable at > 2.1 TPa), consisting of planar H3 clusters, and (ii) the cI16 structure, previously observed in lithium and sodium, stable above 3.5 TPa upon consideration of the zero-point energy. This work clearly revised the known zero-temperature and high-pressure (>0.47 TPa) phase diagram for solid hydrogen and has implications for the constituent structures of giant planets.Comment: accepted in The Journal of Physical Chemistr
