    AST Combustion Workshop: Diagnostics Working Group Report

    A workshop was convened under NASA's Advanced Subsonics Technologies (AST) Program. Many of the principal combustion diagnosticians from industry, academia, and government laboratories were assembled in the Diagnostics/Testing Subsection of this workshop to discuss the requirements and obstacles to the successful implementation of advanced diagnostic techniques to the test environment of the proposed AST combustor. The participants, who represented the major relevant areas of advanced diagnostic methods currently applied to combustion and related fields, first established the anticipated AST combustor flowfield conditions. Critical flow parameters were then examined and prioritized as to their importance to combustor/fuel injector design and manufacture, environmental concerns, and computational interests. Diagnostic techniques were then evaluated in terms of current status, merits and obstacles for each flow parameter. All evaluations are presented in tabular form and recommendations are made on the best-suited diagnostic method to implement for each flow parameter in order of applicability and intrinsic value

    Improved frame synchronization schemes for INMARSAT-B/M SCPC and TDM channels

    This paper proposes faster, more robust, frame synchronization schemes for various Inmarsat-B and Inmarsat-M communication and signalling channels. Equations are developed which permit frame synchronization strategies of the type specified by Inmarsat to be evaluated in terms of average true lock time, average false maintenance time, and average search time. Evaluation of the currently specified framing schemes shows that a significant performance improvement is obtained by optimizing the threshold parameters of the scheme. The optimization seeks a compromise between the conflicting requirements of maximizing true lock time and minimizing search time

    Abstract Evaluating Automated Anti-Icing Technology to Reduce Traffic Collisions Reducing fatalities, injuries, and property damage related to traffic collisions is a priority for road safety agencies. Traffic collisions result in more than 2,200 fatalities and 173,000 injuries each year on Canadian roads. Inclement weather is a contributing factor in traffic crashes for approximately 21 percent of the injuries and 25 percent of property damage Road surface condition sensors, automatic notification alerts, and automated anti-icing spray systems are also examined in this paper. Automated anti-icing systems minimize the amount of chemical needed for de-icing by spraying the road in advance of icing and only when required. These technologies help maintenance managers to reduce traffic collisions and fatalities and make more timely and efficient decisions.
