Thermodynamics and phase behavior of the lamellar Zwanzig model
Binary mixtures of lamellar colloids represented by hard platelets are
studied within a generalization of the Zwanzig model for rods, whereby the
square cuboids can take only three orientations along the , or axes.
The free energy is calculated within Rosenfeld's ''Fundamental Measure Theory''
(FMT) adapted to the present model. In the one-component limit, the model
exhibits the expected isotropic to nematic phase transition, which narrows as
the aspect ratio ( is the width and the thickness of the
platelets) increases. In the binary case the competition between nematic
ordering and depletion-induced segregation leads to rich phase behaviour.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figure
A 20 kiloHertz space station power system
The space station represents the next major U.S. commitment in space. The efficient delivery of power to multiple user loads is key to that success. In 1969, NASA Lewis Research Center began a series of studies with component and circuit developments that led to the high frequency, bi-directional, four quadrant resonant driven converter. Additional studies and subsequent developments into the early 1980's have shown how the high frequency ac power system could provide overall advantages to many aerospace power systems. Because of its wide versatility, it also has outstanding advantages for the Space Station Program and its wide range of users. High frequency ac power provides higher efficiency, lower cost, and improved safety. The 20 kHz power system has exceptional flexibility, is inherently user friendly, and is compatible with all types of energy sources - photovoltaic, solar dynamic, rotating machines or nuclear. Lewis has recently completed development under contract a 25 kW, 20 kHz ac power distribution system testbed. The testbed demonstrates flexibility, versatility, and transparency to user technology as well as high efficiency, low mass, and reduced volume
Electric vehicle power train instrumentation: Some constraints and considerations
The application of pulse modulation control (choppers) to dc motors creates unique instrumentation problems. In particular, the high harmonic components contained in the current waveforms require frequency response accommodations not normally considered in dc instrumentation. In addition to current sensing, accurate power measurement requires not only adequate frequency response but must also address phase errors caused by the finite bandwidths and component characteristics involved. The implications of these problems are assessed
Macroion adsorption: The crucial role of excluded volume and coions
The adsorption of charged colloids (macroions) onto an oppositely charged
planar substrate is investigated theoretically. Taking properly into account
the finite size of the macroions, unusual behaviors are reported. It is found
that the role of the coions (the little salt-ions carrying the same sign of
charge as that of the substrate) is crucial to understand the mechanisms
involved in the process of macroion adsorption. In particular, the coions can
accumulate near the substrate's surface and lead to a counter-intuitive {\it
surface charge amplification}.Comment: 11 pages - 4 figures. To appear in JC
Screened electrostatic interactions between clay platelets
An effective pair potential for systems of uniformly charged lamellar
colloids in the presence of an electrolytic solution of microscopic co- and
counterions is derived. The charge distribution on the discs is expressed as a
collection of multipole moments, and the tensors which determine the
interactions between these multipoles are derived from a screened Coulomb
potential. Unlike previous studies of such systems, the interaction energy may
now be expressed for discs at arbitrary mutual orientation. The potential is
shown to be exactly equivalent to the use of linearized Poisson-Boltzmann
theory.Comment: 23 pages, 10 figures, created with Revtex. To appear in Molecular

Conditional quantum state engineering in repeated 2-photon down conversion
The U(1,1) and U(2) transformations realized by three-mode interaction in the
respective parametric approximations are studied in conditional measurement,
and the corresponding non-unitary transformation operators are derived. As an
application, the preparation of single-mode quantum states using an optical
feedback loop is discussed, with special emphasis of Fock state preparation.
For that example, the influence of non-perfect detection and feedback is also
considered.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures, using a4.st
Structural precursor to freezing: An integral equation study
Recent simulation studies have drawn attention to the shoulder which forms in
the second peak of the radial distribution function of hard-spheres at
densities close to freezing and which is associated with local crystalline
ordering in the dense fluid. We address this structural precursor to freezing
using an inhomogeneous integral equation theory capable of describing local
packing constraints to a high level of accuracy. The addition of a short-range
attractive interaction leads to a well known broadening of the fluid-solid
coexistence region as a function of attraction strength. The appearence of a
shoulder in our calculated radial distribution functions is found to be
consistent with the broadened coexistence region for a simple model potential,
thus demonstrating that the shoulder is not exclusively a high density packing
effect
Mobile application platform heterogeneity: Android vs Windows phone vs iOS vs Firefox OS
Modern smartphones have a rich spectrum of increasingly sophisticated features, opening opportunities for software-led innovation. Of the large number of platforms to develop new software on, in this paper we look closely at three platforms identified as market leaders for the smartphone market by Gartner Group in 2013 and one platform, Firefox OS, representing a new paradigm for operating systems based on web technologies. We compare the platforms in several different categories, such as software architecture, application development, platform capabilities and constraints, and, finally, developer support. Using the implementation of a mobile version of the tic-tac-toe game on all the four platforms, we seek to investigate strengths, weaknesses and challenges of mobile application development on these platforms. Big differences are highlighted when inspecting community environments, hardware abilities and platform maturity. These inevitably impact upon developer choices when deciding on mobile platform development strategies
Many-body interactions and correlations in coarse-grained descriptions of polymer solutions
We calculate the two, three, four, and five-body (state independent)
effective potentials between the centers of mass (CM) of self avoiding walk
polymers by Monte-Carlo simulations. For full overlap, these coarse-grained
n-body interactions oscillate in sign as (-1)^n, and decrease in absolute
magnitude with increasing n. We find semi-quantitative agreement with a scaling
theory, and use this to discuss how the coarse-grained free energy converges
when expanded to arbitrary order in the many-body potentials. We also derive
effective {\em density dependent} 2-body potentials which exactly reproduce the
pair-correlations between the CM of the self avoiding walk polymers. The
density dependence of these pair potentials can be largely understood from the
effects of the {\em density independent} 3-body potential. Triplet correlations
between the CM of the polymers are surprisingly well, but not exactly,
described by our coarse-grained effective pair potential picture. In fact, we
demonstrate that a pair-potential cannot simultaneously reproduce the two and
three body correlations in a system with many-body interactions. However, the
deviations that do occur in our system are very small, and can be explained by
the direct influence of 3-body potentials.Comment: 11 pages, 1 table, 9 figures, RevTeX (revtex.cls
