The construction of a grapheme-to-phone algorithm for Danish
The paper presents the main strategy and some preliminary results of the current work with the construction of a grapheme-to phone algorithm forming part of a text-to-speech algorithm for Danish. The paper also discusses the main difficulties connected with this work, and a brief report of the present status of the project is given
An orthography normalizing program for Danish
The paper is a description of a program which transforms Danish orthographic texts into so-called normalized notation, i.e. a format which can serve as input to a text-to-speech-by-rule algorithm which is under development at the institute. The main features of the program are described, and the peculiarities of Danish orthography which motivate these features are presented. The capabilities and the limitations of the program are illustrated, and the possibilities of future improvements and extensions of the program are outlined
Syntax, morphology, and phonology in text-to-speech systems
The paper is concerned with the integration of linguistic information in text-to-speech systems. Research in synthesis proper is at a stage where the need for systematic integration of comprehensive linguistic information in such systems is making itself felt more than ever. A surface structure parsing system is presented whose main virtue is that it permits linguists to express syntactic as well as lexical and morphological regularities and irregularities of a language in a simple and easy-to-learn formalism. Most aspects of the system are seen in the light of Danish and - sporadically - English and Finnish surface structure
A comment on Basbøll's phonological syllabification as applied to Danish
Basbøll's principles for syllabifying phonological strings in Danish are discussed. Certain counterexamples to the predictions of these principles are presented, and it is argued that certain structural properties of Danish words cannot be adequately accounted for by Basbøll's syllabification strategy in its present form

A Danish text-to-speech system using a text normalizer based on morph analysis
A Nordic cooperative project has been started to develop a text-to-speech device for the Nordic languages. The development is based on the system originally created in Stockholm. Language specific features have necessitated modifications of the original structure. For Danish, this primarily involves the inclusion of a morph based "text normalizing component". This paper presents the construction and function of the system and also discusses some preliminary use of the device
Stød and syllabicity in a Jutlandic dialect
The paper is concerned with the Himmerlandic dialect in North East Jutland. Certain phonological structures which are ambiguous with regard to occurrence of syllabicity, namely long vocoids and certain sequences of sonorant segments, are discussed. It is argued - on the basis of certain prosodic phenomena (the behaviour of stød and stress) - that from a functional point of view these structures are best described as disyllabic. A brief discussion of the possible connection between the Jutlandic apocope and the behaviour of these structures is given
