A finite element methodology for local/global damage evaluation in civil engineering structures

    Get PDF
The paper introduces a new global damage evaluation method which leads to a meaningful global damage index. A numerical procedure for the prediction of local and global damage in civil engineering structures using the finite element method and a continuum damage model, is presented. The method is adequate for the computation of the limit load in reinforced concrete (RC) structures and for the prediction of the failure mechanisms. Details of the applied damage model are given together with a description of the finite element implementation and the procedure for computing the global damage parameters. Examples of applications of the methodology to the nonlinear analysis of a range of RC structures, are presented

Intervening with persons experiencing mental illness and substance use: Patient perceptions of helpful care during psychiatric hospitalization

Background30 - 50% of people with mental illness also experience a substance use problem or concurrent disorder (CD). This dual diagnosis is associated with complex health and social problems, high suicide risk and poor longterm outcomes. Persons with CD have unique needs which present significant challenges for health providers during psychiatric hospitalization. While hospital personnel play a significant role in promoting health and well-being, what “helpful care” means to persons with CD during psychiatric hospitalization remains unexplored, and the health benefits unknown. Research QuestionWhat actual and/or potential interventions, attitudes, actions, and behaviours are perceived as “helpful” by persons with CD during psychiatric hospitalization?MethodsQualitative-descriptive design; individual, semi-structured audio-recorded interviews with 12 inpatient adults diagnosed with CD.ResultsParticipants reported both beneficial and harmful practices.Examples of helpful interventions occurred within 3 distinct areas: 1) building a therapeutic relationship; 2) engaging in health-promoting activities within a healing environment; 3) managing substance use in tandem with mental illness. ImplicationsFindings highlight the importance of relational interventions for persons with CD. This includes actions aimed at tailoring care to fit each individual while offering interpersonal approaches, attitudes and behaviours that are collaborative, caring and respectful. Helpful activities include assisting with daily care, advocating for time outside, offering teaching and learning sessions and facilitating discharge. There is an urgent call to prevent harmful practices and to understand and promote interventions consistent with whole person care for hospitalized clients with CD

CONCERT NO.2 FOR TRUMPET IN ‘B’ AND PIANO BY OLEG NEGRUTA: STRUCTURAL AND INTERPRETATIVE SPECIFICATION

    Get PDF
Oleg Negruta produced different genre pieces for the trumpet. Out of ample pieces we single out the two concerts that contain difficulties for the execution and represent challenges for the performers. Concert nr. 2 for the trumpet in ‘B’ and for the piano was written in 2014 and performed in premiere by the trumpet player and professor Vasile Ciubuc. The interpretative language of Concert nr. 2 is guided by the composer, indicating different terms of tempo and dynamic nuances.. The author used different groups of articulations, such as accents, staccato, legato, detache and others. The musical text contains appoggiaturas, mordents, trills – ornamental elements invoking the folklore origin of the thematic material. Of a certain importance in the composition language are the jazz stylistic proceedings, which bestow a specific coloring to the music. In this way a creative symbiosis is created between these two sources: folklore and jazz, structuring certain aspects related to the interpretation

Peculiarities of the root growth zone and differential diagnosis of granulomatous apical periodontitis

Introduction: Chronic apical periodontitis, as the last evolution stage of an untreated pulp disease, has the area of development in the periapical dental space, an important zone from the cellular point of view infected with bacteria. The large number of chronic apical periodontitis cases encountered in daily dental practice, especially in younger patients, requires an accurate assessment of the periapical status changes caused by the microbial activity. The question is the correct diagnosis of the growth zone from an apical chronic inflammatory process, because the clinical and laboratory similarities can contribute to an erroneous diagnosis. Purpose: The study of the structural features of the growth zone of the root apex and the differential diagnosis between the non-edified root and radicular granuloma in the permanent young teeth. Analysis of bibliographic data on the subject. Radiological study of the permanent teeth with the root non-edified apex at different stages of evolution.Comparative analysis on the base of radiological data of the growth zone and radicular granuloma. Materials and methods: 97 radiological clichés of children from 5 to 17 years with the roots of teeth in different stages of formation and 12 radiograms with radicular granulomas have been studied. Macroscopically, 20 teeth, extracted for various reasons, with unformed roots were studied. Results and discussion: Analysis of radiological data of the tooth roots revealed the pecularities of the growth zone in comparison with the destructive changes characteristic for the chronic granulomatous periodontitis in the form of extended centre of rarefaction with the bone missing in the middle, the periodontal space widening on the account of the cortical lamina resorption and the absence of the spongiosa involved in the inflammatory process. Conclusions: Inflammation and pulp necrosis disturb the process of development of young permanent teeth roots, especially that the inflammatory processes in children are diffuse, affecting the adjacent tissues of the centre. Chronic apical periodontitis, occurring especially in younger patients, requires an accurate assessment of the periapical changes

VISCOUS DAMAGE MODEL FOR TIMOSHENKO BEAM STRUCTURES

    Get PDF
A local damage constitutive model based on Kachanov’s theory is used within a finite element frame and applied to the case of 2D and 3D Timoshenko beam elements. The model takes into account viscous effects, thus allowing damping to be considered in a rigorous way. A damage index based on potential energy criteria, useful in evaluating the behaviour of structures or of parts of structures, is proposed. The procedure is applied to estimate the damage produced by seismic actions in reinforced concrete building structures, whose response is computed by using a non-linear Newmark-type incremental time integration scheme. Three numerical examples are included; one of them compares results obtained by using the proposed model with results of a laboratory test. &nbsp

Новые данные о соединениях в инсульте и их роль при выборе лечения

Universitatea de Stat de Medicină şi Farmacie Nicolae TestemiţanuNew research methods of nervous impulse conveyance paths in the human brain, allowed to create a new branch of neuroscience – connectomics, a branch that aims to search for connectivity changes and methods of infl uencing these networks, either for therapeutic goals, or for remodelation. Cerebral vascular accident (stroke) is a localized lesion, usually uni-hemispherical. Still, brain’s remodelation due to this lesion, in order to reestablish normal functionality, implies plastic changes both in neuronal structure, and in cerebral functional connectivity of both hemispheres.
