    Treatment of Chlamydial Infections

    Get PDF
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are a major health problem with an estimated burden of disease transmission as high as one million new cases per day globally. Chlamydia trachomatis, a member of the genus Chlamydia, is one of the most common and curable causative agents of STIs. C. trochomatis infections usually affect sexually active young adults and adolescents; and are composed of a broad spectrum of diseases varying from asymptomatic infection to severe genito-urinary infection leading to infertility and acute or chronic ocular infection (trachoma), which may result in blindness and pneumonia. Among the members of the genus Chlamydia, there are also two pathogenic species, Chlamydia pneumoniae and Chlamydia psittaci which are responsible for acute respiratory tract infections and febrile illness in humans. The incidence, pathophysiology, and diagnostic methods are discussed in detail in the previous chapters. The purpose of this chapter is to elucidate the management of infections due to C. trachomatis, C. pneumoniae, and C. psittaci including antibiotic susceptibility and resistance mechanisms, treatment recommendations for ocular infections, genito-urinary and respiratory tract infections, and management of sex partners, pregnant women, neonates, and children according to the latest data

Impact of biaxial square woven jute fabric reinforcement on mechanical performance of polyester-based composites

In this study, 4, 6 and 8 plied biaxial square woven jute fabric reinforced polyester composites have been fabricated by the compression molding technique. The physical properties (void fraction, fibre/volume and fibre/weight ratios) and mechanical properties (tensile, flexural and impact strength) of the composites are investigated. According to the physical evaluation test results, the highest void content is calculated for 8 plied composites (11%), where the fibre volume ratio (41.7%) and weight ratio (46.4%) are also maximum. The mechanical test results show that with the increase in jute fabric plies from four to eight, tensile strength, flexural stress and impact resistance improve by 25%, 100% and 340% respectively

3-D crustal structure along the North Anatolian Fault Zone in north-central Anatolia revealed by local earthquake tomography

3-D P-wave velocity structure and Vp/Vs variations in the crust along the North Anatolian Fault Zone (NAFZ) in north-central Anatolia were investigated by the inversion of local P- and S-wave traveltimes, to gain a better understanding of the seismological characteristics of the region. The 3-D local earthquake tomography inversions included 5444 P- and 3200 S-wave readings obtained from 168 well-located earthquakes between 2006 January and 2008 May. Dense ray coverage yields good resolution, particularly in the central part of the study area. The 3-D Vp and Vp/Vs tomographic images reveal clear correlations with both the surface geology and significant tectonic units in the region. We observed the lower limit of the seismogenic zone for north-central Anatolia at 15 km depth. Final earthquake locations display a distributed pattern throughout the study area, with most of the earthquakes occurring on the major splays of the NAFZ, rather than its master strand. We identify three major high-velocity blocks in the mid-crust separated by the Izmir-Ankara-Erzincan Suture and interpret these blocks to be continental basement fragments that were accreted onto the margin following the closure of Neo-Tethyan Ocean. These basement blocks may have in part influenced the rupture propagations of the historical 1939, 1942 and 1943 earthquakes. In addition, large variations in the Vp/Vs ratio in the mid-crust were observed and have been correlated with the varying fluid contents of the existing lithologies and related tectonic structures

Can ratio of neutrophil-tolymphocyte count and erythrocyte sedimentation rate in diabetic foot infection predict osteomyelitis and/or amputation?

The aim of this study was to search for any relations between the neutrophil-tolymphocyte ratio (NLR) and the development of osteomyelitis and the need for amputation in patients with diabetic foot infection (DFI). All data included DFI patients who were hospitalized in our Infectious Diseases Clinic between 2012 and 2015 and who were classified according to International Classification Disease Code System. 75 patients were analyzed in the study. The DFI patients were stratified into 3 groups of whom had amputation procedure, whom had only debridement/drainage procedure and whom had any surgery procedure. Sidac post hoc analysis was used to perform the effects of NLR, C-reactive protein, erythrocyte sedimentation rate and glycosylated hemoglobin on the surgery procedure status. The DFI patients were also stratified into two another separate group for another analysis to search for the effect of NLR values on the development of osteomyelitis. The mean value of NLR in the amputated patients’ group (15.7±10.3 was significantly higher than those with debridement procedure (9.9±5.6) and those without any surgery (6.0±2.8) (P=0.001). NLR values were also found significantly higher in patients with osteomyelitis in the second analysis (P=0.004). In this study, the NLR was found to have a predictive value on the development of osteomyelitis and on the progression to amputation in patients with DFI

Eight-ply E-glass, carbon and E-glass/carbon fabric-reinforced polyester based hybrid composites were manufactured in this study. A vacuum infusion system was used as the production method. Dynamic mechanical analysis, thermogravimetric analysis and diff erential scanning calorimetry analysis were conducted to examine the thermo-mechanical properties of composite samples. The eff ect of reinforcement type and different stacking sequences of fabric plies on the thermo-mechanical properties of composite samples were also investigated. Results showed that the type and alignment of reinforcement material has a signifi cant eff ect on the dynamic mechanical properties of composite samples
