    The benefit of high-conductivity materials in film cooled turbine nozzles

    This study presents an experimental and numerical investigation of the beneficial effect of higher conductivity materials in HP turbine nozzles. Most of the literature studies focus on the maximum temperature that a nozzle can withstand, whereas the effect of thermal gradients is often neglected. However thermal gradients have higher influence on the life of the components and they have to be given careful consideration. In this work it is shown that thermal gradients are reduced by using high conductivity materials and, as a consequence, the nozzles life is appreciably increased. A representative film cooled leading edge with an internal impingement plate was studied experimentally at Texas AM University. Two materials were used, namely polycarbonate and stainless steel, in order to highlight the impact of conduction on coolant effectiveness. Numerically conjugate heat transfer simulations have been carried out with an in house solver to analyse in detail the impact of conduction and internal convection. Both experimental and numerical results show that by increasing the conductivity in the solid region, the thermal gradients are strongly reduced. Numerically it is shown that using inserts of nickel-aluminide alloys in nozzles may reduce the thermal gradients from 3 to 4 times if compared to nowadays design. © 2012 Elsevier Inc

    Synthetic horizontal branch morphology for different metallicities and ages under tidally enhanced stellar wind

    It is believed that, except for metallicity, some other parameters are needed to explain the horizontal branch (HB) morphology of globular clusters (GCs). Furthermore, these parameters are considered to be correlated with the mass loss of the red giant branch (RGB) stars. In our previous work, we proposed that tidally enhanced stellar wind during binary evolution may affect the HB morphology by enhancing the mass loss of the red giant primary. As a further study, we now investigate the effects of metallicity and age on HB morphology by considering tidally enhanced stellar winds during binary evolution. We incorporated the tidally enhanced-stellar-wind model into Eggleton's stellar evolution code to study the binary evolution. To study the effects of metallicity and age on our final results, we conducted two sets of model calculations: (i) for a fixed age, we used three metallicities, namely Z=0.0001, 0.001, and 0.02. (ii) For a fixed metallicity, Z=0.001, we used five ages in our model calculations: 14, 13, 12, 10, and 7 Gyr. We found that HB morphology of GCs becomes bluer with decreasing metallicity, and old GCs present bluer HB morphology than young ones. These results are consistent with previous work. Although the envelope-mass distributions of zero-age HB stars produced by tidally enhanced stellar wind are similar for different metallicities, the synthetic HB under tidally enhanced stellar wind for Z=0.02 presented a distinct gap between red and blue HB. However, this feature was not seen clearly in the synthetic HB for Z=0.001 and 0.0001. We also found that higher binary fractions may make HB morphology become bluer, and we discussed the results with recent observations.Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysic

    Effect of distribution of stickers along backbone on temperature-dependent structural properties in associative polymer solutions

    Effect of distribution of stickers along the backbone on structural properties in associating polymer solutions is studied using self-consistent field lattice model. Only two inhomogeneous morphologies, i.e., microfluctuation homogenous (MFH) and micelle morphologies, are observed. If the system is cooled, the solvent content within the aggregates decreases. When the spacing of stickers along the backbone is increased the temperature-dependent range of aggregation in MFH morphology and half-width of specific heat peak for homogenous solutions-MFH transition increase, and the symmetry of the peak decreases. However, with increasing spacing of stickers, the above three corresponding quantities related to micelles behave differently. It is demonstrated that the broad nature of the observed transitions can be ascribed to the structural changes which accompany the replacement of solvents in aggregates by polymer, which is consistent with the experimental conclusion. It is found that different effect of spacing of stickers on the two transitions can be interpreted in terms of intrachain and interchain associations.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1202.459

    On the origin of the Fermi arc phenomena in the underdoped cuprates: signature of KT-type superconducting transition

    We study the effect of thermal phase fluctuation on the electron spectral function A(k,ω)A(k,\omega) in a d-wave superconductor with Monte Carlo simulation. The phase degree of freedom is modeled by a XY-type model with build-in d-wave character. We find a ridge-like structure emerges abruptly on the underlying Fermi surface in A(k,ω=0)A(k,\omega=0) above the KT-transition temperature of the XY model. Such a ridge-like structure, which shares the same characters with the Fermi arc observed in the pseudogap phase of the underdoped cuprates, is found to be caused by the vortex-like phase fluctuation of the XY model.Comment: 5 page

    A Case of Reactive Cervical Lymphadenopathy with Fat Necrosis Impinging on Adjacent Vascular Structures.

    A tender neck mass in adults can be a diagnostic challenge due to a wide differential diagnosis, which ranges from reactive lymphadenopathy to malignancy. In this report, we describe a case of a young female with an unusually large and tender reactive lymph node with fat necrosis. The diagnostic imaging findings alone mimicked that of scrofula and malignancy, which prompted a complete workup. Additionally, the enlarged lymph node was compressing the internal jugular vein in the setting of oral contraceptive use by the patient, raising concern for Lemierre's syndrome or internal jugular vein thrombosis. This report shows how, in the appropriate clinical context, and especially with the involvement of adjacent respiratory or neurovascular structures, aggressive diagnostic testing can be indicated
