Transient response analysis of a submerged floating tunnel under seismic and wave excitations
In this study, a numerical procedure is described for the transient response analysis of a submerged\ud
floating tunnel with reference of a designed tunnel in Japan. Tension legs seizing the tunnel are simply modeled by a\ud
spring elements and the tunnel itself is assumed by two rigid bodies between which a flexible joint is used. A recorded\ud
seismic excitation is used while the wave load is calculated under a specific design condition. Hydro-damping and\ud
added mass are considered for numerically modeling the underwater condition. A numerical procedure is validated with\ud
compared to the previous results of the designed tunnel. Some modifications are proposed through the validating\ud
process in terms of modeling and analysis procedure. Eventually, the modified numerical procedure will be used in\ud
analyzing the transient response of a newly designed tunnel
String pattern recognition using evolving spiking neural networks and quantum inspired particle swarm optimization
This paper proposes a novel method for string pattern recognition using an Evolving Spiking Neural Network (ESNN) with Quantum-inspired Particle Swarm Optimization (QiPSO). This study reveals an interesting concept of QiPSO by representing information as binary structures. The mechanism optimizes the ESNN parameters and relevant features using the wrapper approach simultaneously. The N-gram kernel is used to map Reuters string datasets into high dimensional feature matrix which acts as an input to the proposed method. The results show promising string classification results as well as satisfactory QiPSO performance in obtaining the best combination of ESNN parameters and in identifying the most relevant features
Biophysical and enzymatic properties of aminoglycoside adenylyltransferase AadA6 from Pseudomonas aeruginosa
AbstractThe gene coding for the aminoglycoside adenylyltransferase (aadA6) from a clinical isolate of Pseudomonas aeruginosa was cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli strain BL21(DE3)pLysS. The overexpressed enzyme (AadA6, 281 amino-acid residues) and a carboxy-terminal truncated variant molecule ([1-264]AadA6) were purified to near homogeneity and characterized. Light scattering experiments conducted under low ionic strength supported equilibrium between monomeric and homodimeric arrangements of the enzyme subunits. Circular Dichroism spectropolarimetry indicated a close structural relation to adenylate kinases. Both forms modified covalently the aminoglycosides streptomycin and spectinomycin. The enzyme required at least 5mM MgCl2 for normal Michaelis–Menten kinetics. Streptomycin exhibited a strong substrate inhibition effect at 1mM MgCl2. The truncated 17 residues at the C-terminus have little influence on protein folding, whereas they have a positive effect on the enzymic activity and stabilize dimers at high protein concentrations (>100μM). Prednisone treatment of elderly-onset rheumatoid arthritis: Disease activity and bone mass in comparison with chloroquine treatment
Objective. Prednisone is frequently used in the treatment of elderly-onset rheumatoid arthritis (RA), but the balance between efficacy and toxicity, including the effect on bone mass, has not been investigated in long-term studies. This prospective, randomized study was undertaken to compare disease activity and bone mass during long-term treatment with prednisone versus chloroquine in this patient population.
Methods. Patients with active RA diagnosed at age ≥ 60 were randomized to receive prednisone (15 mg/day for 1 month, with the dosage tapered as low as possible thereafter) (n = 28) or chloroquine (n = 28). Patients who did not show a response received other second-line drugs as an adjunct to prednisone or as a replacement for chloroquine. Bone mass was measured by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry. The study duration was 2 years.
Results. During the 2 years, treatment with other second-line drugs was needed for 12 patients in the prednisone group (43%) and 8 in the chloroquine group (29%). Functional capacity and disease activity improved significantly in both groups and did not differ significantly between the groups, except for a greater improvement in the prednisone group at 1 month. Radiographic scores for joint destruction progressed similarly in both groups. There was a nonsignificant excess bone loss of 1.8% in the spine and 1.5% in the hip in the prednisone group, compared with the chloroquine group.
Conclusion. Neither treatment was entirely satisfactory since a significant number of patients needed an additional second-line drug over the 2-year period
The Magnetic Field of the Solar Corona from Pulsar Observations
We present a novel experiment with the capacity to independently measure both
the electron density and the magnetic field of the solar corona. We achieve
this through measurement of the excess Faraday rotation due to propagation of
the polarised emission from a number of pulsars through the magnetic field of
the solar corona. This method yields independent measures of the integrated
electron density, via dispersion of the pulsed signal and the magnetic field,
via the amount of Faraday rotation. In principle this allows the determination
of the integrated magnetic field through the solar corona along many lines of
sight without any assumptions regarding the electron density distribution. We
present a detection of an increase in the rotation measure of the pulsar
J18012304 of approximately 160 \rad at an elongation of 0.95 from
the centre of the solar disk. This corresponds to a lower limit of the magnetic
field strength along this line of sight of . The lack of
precision in the integrated electron density measurement restricts this result
to a limit, but application of coronal plasma models can further constrain this
to approximately 20mG, along a path passing 2.5 solar radii from the solar

Age affects joint space narrowing in patients with early active rheumatoid arthritis
Background: Joint space narrowing ( JSN) in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) may be a manifestation of (primary) osteoarthritis becoming more prominent with age. We investigated the severity and predictors of JSN progression among different age groups. Methods: 10-year follow-up data of the BeSt study, a randomised controlled treat-to-target trial in early RA were used. Annual X-rays of hands and feet were scored using the Sharp/van der Heijde score (SHS). Subgroups were defined by age at baseline: 55, 40<55 and <40 years. JSN progression predictors were assessed by Poisson regression. Results: Baseline JSN scores (median (IQR)) were igher in patients 55 (2.0 (0.0-6.0)) compared with the other age groups: 1.0 (0.0-3.0) 40<55 and 0.3 (0.0-3.0) <40, p<0.001. After 10 years, total JSN and SHS were similar in all age groups. In patients 55 the mean erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) over time (relative risk 1.02 (95% CI 1.00 to 1.03)

Differential expression of canonical and non-canonical Wnt ligands in ameloblastoma
BACKGROUND: Canonical and non-canonical Wnt signaling pathways modulate diverse cellular processes during embryogenesis and post-natally. Their deregulations have been implicated in cancer development and progression. Wnt signaling is essential for odontogenesis. The ameloblastoma is an odontogenic epithelial neoplasm of enamel organ origin. Altered expressions of Wnts-1, -2, -5a, and -10a are detected in this tumor. The activity of other Wnt members remains unclarified. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Canonical (Wnts-1, -2, -3, -8a, -8b, -10a, and -10b), non-canonical (Wnts-4, -5a, -5b, -6, 7a, -7b, and -11), and indeterminate groups (Wnts-2b and -9b) were examined immunohistochemically in 72 cases of ameloblastoma (19 unicystic UA, 35 solid/multicystic SMA, eight desmoplastic DA, and 10 recurrent RA). RESULTS: Canonical Wnt proteins (except Wnt-10b) were heterogeneously expressed in ameloblastoma. Their distribution patterns were distinctive with some overlap. Protein localization was mainly membranous and/or cytoplasmic. Overexpression of Wnt-1 in most subsets (UA = 19/19; SMA = 35/35; DA = 5/8; RA = 7/10) (P < 0.05), Wnt-3 in granular cell variant (n = 3/ 3), and Wnt-8b in DA (n = 8/ 8) was key observations. Wnts-8a and -10a demonstrated enhanced expression in tumoral buddings and acanthomatous areas. Noncanonical and indeterminate Wnts were absent except for limited Wnt-7b immunoreactivity in UA (n = 1/ 19) and SMA (n = 1/ 35). Stromal components expressed variable Wnt positivity. CONCLUSION: Differential expression of Wnt ligands in different ameloblastoma subtypes suggests that the canonical and non-canonical Wnt pathways are selectively activated or repressed depending on the tumor cell differentiation status. Canonical Wnt pathway is most likely the main transduction pathway while Wnt-1 might be the key signaling molecule involved in ameloblastoma tumorigenesis. J Oral Pathol Med (2012) 41: 332-33
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy improves colorectal anastomotic healing
Purpose: Hyperbaric oxygen treatment (HBOT) has been found to improve the healing of poorly oxygenated tissues. This study aimed to investigate the influence of HBOT on the healing in ischemic colorectal anastomosis. Methods: Forty Wistar rats were randomly divided into a treatment group that received HBOT for 10 consecutive days (7 days before and 3 days after surgery), or in a control group, which did not receive the therapy. Colectomy with an ischemic anastomosis was performed in all rats. In each group, the rats were followed for 3 or 7 days after surgery to determine the influence of HBOT on anastomotic healing. Results: Five rats from each group died during follow-up. No anastomotic dehiscence was seen in the HBOT group, compared to 37.5 % and 28.6 % dehiscence in the control group on postoperative day (POD) 3 and 7, respectively. The HBOT group had a significantly higher bursting pressure (130.9 ± 17.0 mmHg) than the control group (88.4 ± 46.7 mmHg; p = 0.03) on POD 3. On POD 3 and POD 7, the adhesion severity was significantly higher in the control groups than in the HBOT groups (p < 0.005). Kidney function (creatinine level) of the HBOT group was significantly better than of the control group on POD 7 (p = 0.001). Interestingly, a significantly higher number of CD206+ cells (marker for type 2 macrophages) was observed in the HBOT group at the anastomotic area on POD 3. Conclusion: Hyperbaric oxygen enhanced the healing of ischemic anastomoses in rats and improved the postoperative kidney function
