    Spin-triplet s-wave local pairing induced by Hund's rule coupling

    We show within the dynamical mean field theory that local multiplet interactions such as Hund's rule coupling produce local pairing superconductivity in the strongly correlated regime. Spin-triplet superconductivity driven by the Hund's rule coupling emerges from the pairing mediated by local fluctuations in pair exchange. In contrast to the conventional spin-triplet theories, the local orbital degrees of freedom has the anti-symmetric part of the exchange symmetry, leaving the spatial part as fully gapped and symmetric s-wave.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figure

    Local heat/mass transfer and pressure drop in a two-pass rib-roughened channel for turbine airfoil cooling

    The heat transfer characteristics of turbulent air flow in a multipass channel were studied via the naphthalene sublimation technique. The naphthalene-coated test section, consisting of two straight, square channels joined by a 180 deg turn, resembled the internal cooling passages of gas turbine airfoils. The top and bottom surfaces of the test channel were roughened by rib turbulators. The rib height-to-hydraulic diameter ratio (e/D) were 0.063 and 0.094, and the rib pitch-to-height ratio (P/e) were 10 and 20. The local heat/mass transfer coefficients on the roughened top wall and on the smooth divider and side walls of the test channel were determined for three Reynolds numbers of 15, 30, and 60, thousand, and for three angles of attack (alpha) of 90, 60, and 45 deg. Results showed that the local Sherwood numbers on the ribbed walls were 1.5 to 6.5 times those for a fully developed flow in a smooth square duct. The average ribbed-wall Sherwood numbers were 2.5 to 3.5 times higher than the fully developed values, depending on the rib angle of attack and the Reynolds number. The results also indicated that, before the turn, the heat/mass transfer coefficients in the cases of alpha = 60 and 45 deg were higher than those in the case of alpha=90 deg. However, after the turn, the heat/mass transfer coefficients in the oblique-rib cases were lower than those in the transverse rib case. Correlations for the average Sherwood number ratios for individual channel surfaces and for the overall Sherwood number ratios are reported.     Iwasawa Effects in Multi-layer Optics

    There are many two-by-two matrices in layer optics. It is shown that they can be formulated in terms of a three-parameter group whose algebraic property is the same as the group of Lorentz transformations in a space with two space-like and one time-like dimensions, or the Sp(2)Sp(2) group which is a standard theoretical tool in optics. Among the interesting mathematical properties of this group, the Iwasawa decomposition drastically simplifies the matrix algebra under certain conditions, and leads to a concise expression for the S-matrix for transmitted and reflected rays. It is shown that the Iwasawa effect can be observed in multi-layer optics, and a sample calculation of the S-matrix is given.Comment: RevTex 10 pages including 1 psfi

    A New Path-Integral Representation of the TT-Matrix in Potential Scattering

    We employ the method used by Barbashov and collaborators in Quantum Field Theory to derive a path-integral representation of the TT-matrix in nonrelativistic potential scattering which is free of functional integration over fictitious variables as was necessary before. The resulting expression serves as a starting point for a variational approximation applied to high-energy scattering from a Gaussian potential. Good agreement with exact partial-wave calculations is found even at large scattering angles.     Consumer perceptions towards unsolicited advertisements on social media

    The practice of unsolicited advertisements on social media has grown prevalent. This data article presents 837 US-based social media users’ consumer perceptions of such advertisements. Understanding how consumers perceive unsolicited advertising is vital to developing effective digital marketing strategies. Data collection was via an online survey adopting multi-measurement items from extant studies for reliability and validity. The data showed high internal consistency with Cronbach’s alpha testing, and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) found the measurement model valid. Goodness-of-fit indices showed a good fit with the data. Finally, convergent and discriminant validity was confirmed using the composite reliability, average variance extracted (AVE), and correlations among constructs. Further research may utilise the data using inferential analysis techniques to add to our understanding of consumer perceptions of unsolicited advertising on social media

    Assessment of different urban traffic control strategy impacts on vehicle emissions

    This paper investigates the influence of traffic signal control strategy on vehicle emissions, vehicle journey time and total throughput flow within a single isolated four-armed junction. Two pre-timed signal plans are considered, one with two-stages involving permissive-only opposing turns and the other with four-stages which has no conflicting traffic. Additionally, the increase in efficiency by utilising actuated signal timing where green time is re-optimised as flow values vary is investigated. A microscopic traffic simulation model is used to model flows and AIRE (Analysis of Instantaneous Road Emissions) microscopic emissions model is utilised to out- put emission levels from the flow data. A simple junction model shows that the two-stage signal plan is more efficient in both emis- sions and journey time. However, as the level of opposed turning vehicles and conflicting movement increases, the two-stage model moves to being the inferior signal plan choice and the four-stage plan outputs fewer emissions than the two-stage plan. A real-world example of a four-armed junction has been used in this study and from the traffic survey data and existing junction layout; it is rec- ommended that a two-stage plan is used as it produces lower amounts of emissions and shorter journey times compared to a four-stage plan. The results also show that nitrogen oxides (NOx) are the most sensitive to changes in flow followed by carbon dioxide (CO2), Black Carbon and then particulate matter (PM10)

    Searching for sub-millisecond pulsars from highly polarized radio sources

    Pulsars are among the most highly polarized sources in the universe. The NVSS has catalogued 2 million radio sources with linear polarization measurements, from which we have selected 253 sources, with polarization percentage greater than 25%, as targets for pulsar searches. We believe that such a sample is not biased by selection effects against ultra-short spin or orbit periods. Using the Parkes 64m telescope, we conducted searches with sample intervals of 0.05 ms and 0.08 ms, sensitive to submillisecond pulsars.
