Urban park and educational benefits of ecosyste\m: case study of Taman Perbandaran Pulau Pinang

The potential of urban parks in providing education on ecosystem is important as a mean to increase socio-ecological well-being. Sustainable development requires the quality and sustenance of the socio-ecological system which pose a need for knowledge on how ecosystems fulfil social needs. This dependence can be described in the operational definition of ecosystem in providing services, benefits or products to meet human needs, directly or indirectly, which occurred along natural processes and ecosystem structure known as ecosystem services. Hence, the importance of education on ecosystem services to ensure socio-ecological well-being. The article intends to identify ecosystem services that can be found in the urban park and identify potential educational activities to be established in the urban park. Firstly, observations were used to map and identify ecosystem services of the park. Secondly, purposive sampling with two sets of semi-structured interview with 100 urban park visitors and five representatives from five focus groups. The results show that the ecosystem in Taman Perbandaran Pulau Pinang is able to provide benefits to humans in terms of supporting services, regulating services, provisioning of services and cultural services to the users. These services can be used in educational activities to improve knowledge on the importance of ecosystem for social well-being. At present, only labels indicating plants’ name are available at the park. Therefore, other forms of ecosystem educational activities could be established in cooperation with various stakeholders and the park management to further enhance the functions of the urban park ecosystem landscape. In summary, urban parks provide educational benefits to urban communities through reinforcing knowledge of ecosystem services that are important for social well-being

Enhanced status of inflammation and endothelial activation in subjects with familial hypercholesterolaemia and their related unaffected family members: a case control study

Abstract Background Familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH) leads to premature coronary artery diseases (CAD) which pathophysiologically can be measured by inflammation, endothelial activation and oxidative stress status. However, the status of these biomarkers among related unaffected relatives of FH cases and whether FH is an independent predictor of these biomarkers have not been well established. Thus, this study aims to (1) compare the biomarkers of inflammation, endothelial activation and oxidative stress between patients with FH, their related unaffected relatives (RUC) and normolipaemic subjects (NC) (2)determine whether FH is an independent predictor of these biomarkers. Methods One hundred thirty-one FH patients, 68 RUC and 214 matched NC were recruited. Fasting lipid profile, biomarkers of inflammation (hsCRP), endothelial activation (sICAM-1 and E-selectin) and oxidative stress [oxidized LDL (oxLDL), malondialdehyde (MDA) and F2-isoprostanes (ISP)] were analyzed and independent predictor was determined using binary logistic regression analysis. Results hsCRP was higher in FH and RUC compared to NC (mean ± SD = 1.53 ± 1.24 mg/L and mean ± SD = 2.54 ± 2.30 vs 1.10 ± 0.89 mg/L, p  0.05). FH was an independent predictor for sICAM-1 (p = 0.007), ox-LDL (p < 0.001) and MDA (p < 0.001) while RUC independently predicted for sICAM-1 (p < 0.001). Conclusion The screening for FH is vital as all biomarkers associated with atherogenesis are higher in these subjects and FH also independently predict biomarkers of endothelial activation and oxidative stress. Furthermore, despite not fulfilling the diagnostic criteria for FH, related unaffected family members that may not phenotypically express the mutation may still be at risk of developing CAD as reflected from the enhanced inflammatory and endothelial activation status observed in this group. This highlights the need to not only conduct family tracing in indexed FH cases, but also assess the coronary risk among family members that do not fulfil the FH diagnostic criteria

Growth of Si-based core–shell nanowires through gases decomposition reactions with tunable morphologies, compositions, and electrochemical properties

Si-based core–shell nanowires grown on Ni-coated c-Si, glass and Ni foil substrates by hot-wire chemical vapor deposition were extensively investigated. The nanowires, which included NiSi nanowires, NiSi/Si core–shell nanowires, and NiSi/SiC core–shell nanowires, were grown by varying the Tfs from 1150 to 1950 °C. It was found that the morphologies of these nanowires were strongly dependent on the Tf attributed to the different decomposition reactions of SiH4 and CH4 molecules in the range of Tf. The hydrogen-assisted heat transfer effect induced the growth of the single-crystalline NiSi core, the polycrystalline Si, and amorphous SiC shells at Tf within the 1450–1650 and 1650–1950 °C ranges, respectively. The NiSi/Si core–shell nanowires demonstrated a relatively better electrochemical performance compared to the NiSi/SiC core–shell and NiSi nanowires with the specific capacity of 326 mF/cm2. The NiSi/Si core–shell nanowires exhibited good electrochemical stability at high current density with 61% capacity retention after 2000 cycles. The nucleation limited silicide reactions of the Si-based core–shell nanowires and the effects of the gas-phase reactions on the growth of the nanowires are discussed

Global perspective of familial hypercholesterolaemia: a cross-sectional study from the EAS Familial Hypercholesterolaemia Studies Collaboration (FHSC)

none724siBackground The European Atherosclerosis Society Familial Hypercholesterolaemia Studies Collaboration (FHSC) global registry provides a platform for the global surveillance of familial hypercholesterolaemia through harmonisation and pooling of multinational data. In this study, we aimed to characterise the adult population with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia and described how it is detected and managed globally.Methods Using FHSC global registry data, we did a cross-sectional assessment of adults (aged 18 years or older) with a clinical or genetic diagnosis of probable or definite heterozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia at the time they were entered into the registries. Data were assessed overall and by WHO regions, sex, and index versus non-index cases.Findings Of the 61 612 individuals in the registry, 42 167 adults (21 999 [53.6%] women) from 56 countries were included in the study. Of these, 31 798 (75.4%) were diagnosed with the Dutch Lipid Clinic Network criteria, and 35 490 (84.2%) were from the WHO region of Europe. Median age of participants at entry in the registry was 46.2 years (IQR 34.3-58.0); median age at diagnosis of familial hypercholesterolaemia was 44.4 years (32.5-56.5), with 40.2% of participants younger than 40 years when diagnosed. Prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors increased progressively with age and varied by WHO region. Prevalence of coronary disease was 17.4% (2.1% for stroke and 5.2% for peripheral artery disease), increasing with concentrations of untreated LDL cholesterol, and was about two times lower in women than in men. Among patients receiving lipid-lowering medications, 16 803 (81.1%) were receiving statins and 3691 (21.2%) were on combination therapy, with greater use of more potent lipid-lowering medication in men than in women. Median LDL cholesterol was 5.43 mmol/L (IQR 4.32-6.72) among patients not taking lipid-lowering medications and 4.23 mmol/L (3.20-5.66) among those taking them. Among patients taking lipid-lowering medications, 2.7% had LDL cholesterol lower than 1.8 mmol/L; the use of combination therapy, particularly with three drugs and with proprotein convertase subtilisin-kexin type 9 inhibitors, was associated with a higher proportion and greater odds of having LDL cholesterol lower than 1.8 mmol/L. Compared with index cases, patients who were non-index cases were younger, with lower LDL cholesterol and lower prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors and cardiovascular diseases (all p&lt;0.001).Interpretation Familial hypercholesterolaemia is diagnosed late. Guideline-recommended LDL cholesterol concentrations are infrequently achieved with single-drug therapy. Cardiovascular risk factors and presence of coronary disease were lower among non-index cases, who were diagnosed earlier. Earlier detection and greater use of combination therapies are required to reduce the global burden of familial hypercholesterolaemia. Copyright (C) 2021 Elsevier Ltd.
