An Innovative EPW Design Using Add-on Features to Meet Malaysian Requirements

    Get PDF
Electric Powered Wheelchair (EPW) is a special Electric Vehicle (EV). It is used by senior citizens, handicapped, disabled, people with mobility impairment or people who have health complaints. Therefore, it is not always safe to use an EPW independently as users are more subject to fatigue, weakness and emergency situations. Due to the special needs of EPW drivers/users, the design of the EPW and its controlling system should fulfill their requirements. This paper proposes a new design for EPW which is suitable for Malaysian community needs. The design takes in consideration the easiness of the independent use, the price reduction and the flexibility in changing the controlling method. A smartphone is used as an add-on controlling option besides to the normal joystick. A health monitoring system which implements Internet of Things (IoT) features is also presented as an add-on device. The EPW system is designed to be extendable and accepts other add-on devices. The system is tested in real modes and it is validated as a real-time system

A review on recent development of minimum quantity lubrication for sustainable machining

    Get PDF
Achieving sustainable machining is in demand nowadays and it is in line with the rise of global eco-awareness and rigorous regulations by the authorities to prevent from further damaging the environment and its constituents. One of the sustainable solutions extensively explored over the years is machining with minimum quantity lubrication system. Nevertheless, there is still room to improve this system as minimum quantity lubrication assisted machining poses some challenges. This paper provides a review of research articles involving the improvements made to enhance machining performance with minimum quantity lubrication system. To carry out the study, three search databases are used to compile all the minimum quantity lubrication advancements published over a span of 6 most recent years from 2014 to 2019. The machining performance are compiled for each category of advancements: minimum quantity lubrication with additives, minimum quantity lubrication with cooled air/gas as well as restructuring minimum quantity lubrication system and critically considers the experiment details such as workpiece material, machining process, cutting tool material, cooling/lubrication condition, cutting fluid and the output measurements, namely surface roughness, tool wear, cutting force and cutting temperature. Results obtained from the articles mostly show that the minimum quantity lubrication advancements outperform an independent minimum quantity lubrication system by generating better surface quality, providing lower tool wear and cutting force

Knowledge Management To Boost Productivity In Manufacturing

    Get PDF
Data are the crucial element for productivity improvement and the evaluation or measurement process in the manufacturing sector because the data can tell the real situation about the production site. The data are useful for productivity improvement by using certain lean manufacturing’s tools such as Value Stream Mapping (VSM), Single Minutes of Exchange Die (SMED), Total Productive Maintenance (TPM), and others. The data are also necessary for performance measurement. In this paper, we discuss the necessary data that should be included in a knowledge repository for manufacturing where the data then will be used by an assessment tool. The assessment tool is an important factor because knowledge management has a deep relationship with performance evaluation and measurement. Data Management to boost productivity in manufacturing can be divided into five phase and consists of in fourteen steps

A monitoring system for EPW safe use

Electric Powered Wheelchair (EPW) can be considered as a special Electric Vehicle (EV) because it is used by senior citizens, disabled drivers/users who have special needs. Using manual or electric wheelchair independently rises up an important problem which is the lack of user monitoring. Wheelchair users are more subject to fatigue and emergency health situations. This paper presents an add-on smart monitoring system to help wheelchair users to use the wheelchair independently and safely. The system integrates health related sensors with computer, mobile phone and an alarm system. The tested prototype uses two sensors, namely, temperature sensor and heart beat sensor. The system is extendable and more sensors can be added. The temperature sensor is used to sense the body temperature which is a basic parameter for monitoring and diagnosing human health. Heartbeat sensor is used to measure the user Mean Arterial Pressure (MAP). It can be connected to a personal computer to show the cardiograph. Body temperature and MAP data are acquired by an embedded system and displayed on a Liquid Crystal Display (LCD). Data are also sent to the cloud for Internet of Things (IoT) monitoring. In emergency cases alarm signal is triggered. Moreover, a notification Email and SMS messages are sent to the people in charge of monitoring the user. The system was tested and validated as a real-time monitoring system
