Here, there and everywhere: Emotion and mental state talk in different social contexts predicts empathic helping in toddlers
A growing body of literature suggests that parents socialize early-emerging prosocial behavior across varied contexts and in subtle yet powerful ways. We focus on discourse about emotions and mental states as one potential socialization mechanism given its conceptual relevance to prosocial behavior and its known positive relations with emotion understanding and social-cognitive development, as well as parents' frequent use of such discourse beginning in infancy. Specifically, we ask how parents' emotion and mental state talk (EMST) with their toddlers relates to toddlers' helping and how these associations vary by context. Children aged 18- to 30-months (n = 38) interacted with a parent during book reading and joint play with toys, two everyday contexts that afford parental discussion of emotions and mental states. Children also participated in instrumental and empathic helping tasks. Results revealed that although parents discuss mental states with their children in both contexts, the nature of their talk differs: during book reading parents labeled emotions and mental states significantly more often than during joint play, especially simple affect words (e.g., happy, sad) and explanations or elaborations of emotions; whereas they used more desire talk and mental state words (e.g., think, know) in joint play. Parents' emotion and mental state discourse related to children's empathic, emotion-based helping behavior; however, it did not relate to instrumental, action-based helping. Moreover, relations between parent talk and empathic helping varied by context: children who helped more quickly had parents who labeled emotion and mental states more often during joint play and who elicited this talk more often during book reading. As EMST both varies between contexts and exhibits context-specific associations with empathic prosocial behavior early in development, we conclude that such discourse may be a key form of socialization in emerging prosociality. © 2014 Drummond, Paul, Waugh, Hammond and Brownell
Deceased donation uterus transplantation: a review
Uterus transplantation (UTx) offers women with absolute uterine factor infertility the option to gestate and birth their own biologically related child. The first birth following living donation UTx happened in 2014. The first birth following deceased donation happened in December 2017, with further successes since. Interest in deceased donation UTx is increasing. The authors established a database to track UTx clinical trials and outcomes. Utilising this database and existing literature, this article reviews the first reported cases of deceased donation UTx and outcomes, and drawing upon comparisons with living donor UTx, comments upon the future for this area of reproductive transplantation research. This is the first article to bring together the literature on deceased do-nation UTx procedures and outcomes
Dynamic Adaptable Asynchronous Progress Model for MPI RMA Multiphase Applications
Casper is a process-based asynchronous progress model for MPI one-sided communication on multi- and many-core architectures. The one-sided communication is not truly one-sided in most MPI implementations: the target process still relies on software progress to complete incoming operations. Casper allows the user to specify an arbitrary number of cores dedicated to background ghost processes and transparently redirects the RMA operations to ghost processes by utilizing the PMPI redirection and MPI-3 shared-memory technologies. Although Casper benefits applications that suffer from lack of asynchronous progress, the operation redirection design might not support complex multiphase applications effectively, which often involve dynamically changing communication density and computing workloads. In this paper, we present an adaptive mechanism in Casper to address the limitation of static asynchronous progress in multiphase applications. We exploit two adaptive strategies, a user-guided strategy and a fully transparent and automatic strategy based on self-profiling and prediction, to dynamically reconfigure the asynchronous progress in Casper according to real-time performance characteristics during multiphase execution. Tools for Semi-automated Landform Classification: A Comparison in the Basilicata Region (Southern Italy)
Recent advances in spatial methods of digital elevation model
(DEMs) analysis have addressed many research topics on the assessment of
morphometric parameters of the landscape. Development of computer algorithms for calculating the geomorphometric properties of the Earth’s surface has
allowed for expanding of some methods in the semi-automatic recognition and
classification of landscape features. In such a way, several papers have been
produced, documenting the applicability of the landform classification based on
map algebra. The Topographic Position Index (TPI) is one of the most widely
used parameters for semi-automated landform classification using GIS software.
The aim was to apply the TPI classes for landform classification in the Basilicata
Region (Southern Italy). The Basilicata Region is characterized by an extremely
heterogeneous landscape and geological features. The automated landform
extraction, starting from two different resolution DEMs at 20 and 5 m-grids, has
been carried out by using three different GIS software: Arcview, Arcmap, and
SAGA. Comparison of the landform maps resulting from each software at a
different scale has been realized, furnishing at the end the best landform map and
consequently a discussion over which is the best software implementation of the
TPI method

Tandem quadruplication of HMA4 in the zinc (Zn) and cadmium (Cd) hyperaccumulator noccaea caerulescens
Zinc (Zn) and cadmium (Cd) hyperaccumulation may have evolved twice in the Brassicaceae, in Arabidopsis halleri and in the Noccaea genus. Tandem gene duplication and deregulated expression of the Zn transporter, HMA4, has previously been linked to Zn/Cd hyperaccumulation in A. halleri. Here, we tested the hypothesis that tandem duplication and deregulation of HMA4 expression also occurs in Noccaea. A Noccaea caerulescens genomic library was generated, containing 36,864 fosmid pCC1FOSTM clones with insert sizes ~20–40 kbp, and screened with a PCR-generated HMA4 genomic probe. Gene copy number within the genome was estimated through DNA fingerprinting and pooled fosmid pyrosequencing. Gene copy numbers within individual clones was determined by PCR analyses with novel locus specific primers. Entire fosmids were then sequenced individually and reads equivalent to 20-fold coverage were assembled to generate complete whole contigs. Four tandem HMA4 repeats were identified in a contiguous sequence of 101,480 bp based on sequence overlap identities. These were flanked by regions syntenous with up and downstream regions of AtHMA4 in Arabidopsis thaliana. Promoter-reporter b-glucuronidase (GUS) fusion analysis of a NcHMA4 in A. thaliana revealed deregulated expression in roots and shoots, analogous to AhHMA4 promoters, but distinct from AtHMA4 expression which localised to the root vascular tissue. This remarkable consistency in tandem duplication and deregulated expression of metal transport genes between N. caerulescens and A. halleri, which last shared a common ancestor >40 mya, provides intriguing evidence that parallel evolutionary pathways may underlie Zn/Cd hyperaccumulation in Brassicaceae

Are mental toughness and mental health contradictory concepts in elite sport? A narrative review of theory and evidence
Objective: Athlete development and management encompass a complex interaction of biological, psychological, and social factors. Within elite sport, multidisciplinary sport science and medicine teams play an important role in achieving an optimal balance between preventing athlete ill-health and optimizing health and performance. The psychological aspects of athlete health and performance have gained increased attention over the past two decades, with much of this research concerned with the mental health of athletes and the concept of mental toughness. Recently, it was proposed that mental health and mental toughness are contradictory concepts in the world of elite sport. Although an interesting proposition, this claim was not substantiated. Thus, the purpose of this narrative review was to evaluate theory and evidence regarding the thesis that mental health and mental toughness are contradictory concepts in the world of elite sport, with the view to advance scholarly knowledge and inform professional practice. Design: Narrative review. Results: A critical evaluation of this literature suggests that mental toughness may represent a positive indicator of mental health, or facilitate its attainment, rather than be at odds with it. Conclusion: When implemented alongside multilayered approaches to organizational change (e.g., group structures, policies), mental toughness could be used as a 'hook' to attract athletes into settings that can open dialogue on the importance of mental health and improve knowledge of key issues (e.g., stigma, symptoms)
In vitro suppression of the MMP-3 gene in normal and cytokine-treated human chondrosarcoma using small interfering RNA
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Matrix metalloproteinase (MMPs) synthesized and secreted from connective tissue cells have been thought to participate in degradation of the extracellular matrix. Increased MMPs activities that degrade proteoglycans have been measured in osteoarthritis cartilage. This study aims to suppress the expression of the <it>MMP-3 </it>gene in <it>in vitro </it>human chondrosarcoma using siRNA.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Cells were categorized into four groups: control (G.1); transfection solution treated (G.2); negative control siRNA treated (G.3); and <it>MMP-3 </it>siRNA treated (G.4). All four groups were further subdivided into two groups - treated and non-treated with IL-1β- following culture for 48 and 72 h. We observed the effects of gene suppression according to cell morphology, glycosaminoglycan (GAG) and hyaluronan (HA) production, and gene expression by using real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In IL-1β treated cells the apoptosis rate in G.4 was found to be lower than in all other groups, while viability and mitotic rate were higher than in all other groups (<it>p </it>< 0.05). The production of GAG and HA in G.4 was significantly higher than the control group (<it>p </it>< 0.05). <it>MMP-3 </it>gene expression was downregulated significantly (<it>p </it>< 0.05).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p><it>MMP-3 </it>specific siRNA can inhibit the expression of <it>MMP-3 </it>in chondrosarcoma. This suggests that <it>MMP-3 </it>siRNA has the potential to be a useful preventive and therapeutic agent for osteoarthritis.</p
A New Framework for Music Education Knowledge and Skill
This study investigates perceptions of secondary school band and orchestra teachers regarding the relative importance of knowledge and skill categories to professional success, using a framework modeled after Schulman (1986, 1987). Band and orchestra teachers in secondary schools (N = 214) complete an anonymous, online survey ranking the relative importance of various knowledge and skill categories. Participants rank pedagogical content knowledge, content knowledge, and general pedagogical knowledge highest. There are no significant differences in the rankings of the categories among various subgroups at the p < .05 level. Results confirm the applicability of Schulman's model to music education. This framework has implications for undergraduate, graduate, and continuing professional education. SRFR1 Negatively Regulates Plant NB-LRR Resistance Protein Accumulation to Prevent Autoimmunity
Plant defense responses need to be tightly regulated to prevent auto-immunity, which is detrimental to growth and development. To identify negative regulators of Resistance (R) protein-mediated resistance, we screened for mutants with constitutive defense responses in the npr1-1 background. Map-based cloning revealed that one of the mutant genes encodes a conserved TPR domain-containing protein previously known as SRFR1 (SUPPRESSOR OF rps4-RLD). The constitutive defense responses in the srfr1 mutants in Col-0 background are suppressed by mutations in SNC1, which encodes a TIR-NB-LRR (Toll Interleukin1 Receptor-Nucleotide Binding-Leu-Rich Repeat) R protein. Yeast two-hybrid screens identified SGT1a and SGT1b as interacting proteins of SRFR1. The interactions between SGT1 and SRFR1 were further confirmed by co-immunoprecipitation analysis. In srfr1 mutants, levels of multiple NB-LRR R proteins including SNC1, RPS2 and RPS4 are increased. Increased accumulation of SNC1 is also observed in the sgt1b mutant. Our data suggest that SRFR1 functions together with SGT1 to negatively regulate R protein accumulation, which is required for preventing auto-activation of plant immunity
