Graph diffusion distance: a difference measure for weighted graphs based on the graph Laplacian exponential kernel
pre-printWe propose a novel difference metric, called the graph diffusion distance (GDD), for quantifying the difference between two weighted graphs with the same number of vertices. Our approach is based on measuring the average similarity of heat diffusion on each graph. We compute the graph Laplacian exponential kernel matrices, corresponding to repeatedly solving the heat diffusion problem with initial conditions localized to single vertices. The GDD is then given by the Frobenius norm of the difference of the kernels, at the diffusion time yielding the maximum difference. We study properties of the proposed distance on both synthetic examples, and on real-data graphs representing human anatomical brain connectivity
Dequantizing Compressed Sensing: When Oversampling and Non-Gaussian Constraints Combine
In this paper we study the problem of recovering sparse or compressible
signals from uniformly quantized measurements. We present a new class of convex
optimization programs, or decoders, coined Basis Pursuit DeQuantizer of moment
(BPDQ), that model the quantization distortion more faithfully than the
commonly used Basis Pursuit DeNoise (BPDN) program. Our decoders proceed by
minimizing the sparsity of the signal to be reconstructed subject to a
data-fidelity constraint expressed in the -norm of the residual error
for .
We show theoretically that, (i) the reconstruction error of these new
decoders is bounded if the sensing matrix satisfies an extended Restricted
Isometry Property involving the norm, and (ii), for Gaussian random
matrices and uniformly quantized measurements, BPDQ performance exceeds
that of BPDN by dividing the reconstruction error due to quantization by
. This last effect happens with high probability when the number of
measurements exceeds a value growing with , i.e. in an oversampled situation
compared to what is commonly required by BPDN = BPDQ. To demonstrate the
theoretical power of BPDQ, we report numerical simulations on signal and
image reconstruction problems

Effects of diet forage source and neutral detergent fiber content on milk production of dairy cattle and methane emissions determined using GreenFeed and respiration chamber techniques
Strategies to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions from dairy cattle are unlikely to be adopted if production or profitability is reduced. The primary objective of this study was to examine the effects of high maize silage (MS) vs. high grass silage (GS) diets, without or with added neutral-detergent fiber (NDF) on milk production and methane emission of dairy cattle, using GreenFeed (GF) or respiration chamber (RC) techniques for methane emission measurements. Experiment 1 was 12-wks in duration with a randomized block continuous design and 40 Holstein cows (74 d in milk; DIM) in free-stall housing, assigned to 1 of 4 dietary treatments (n = 10 per treatment), according to calving date, parity and milk yield. Milk production and dry matter intake (DMI) were measured daily, and milk composition measured weekly, with methane yield (g/kg DMI) estimated using a GF unit (wks 10 to 12). Experiment 2 was a 4 × 4 Latin Square Design with 5-wk periods and 4 dairy cows (114 DIM) fed the same 4 dietary treatments as in experiment 1. Measurements of DMI, milk production and composition occurred in wk 4, and DMI, milk production and methane yield were measured for 2 d in RC during wk 5. Dietary treatments for both experiments were fed as TMRs offered ad libitum and containing 500 g silage/kg DM comprised of either 75:25 MS:GS (MS) or 25:75 MS:GS (GS), without or with added NDF from chopped straw and soy hulls (+47 g NDF/kg DM; MSNDF and GSNDF). In both experiments, compared to high GS, cows fed high MS had a higher (P = 0.01) DMI, greater (P = 0.01) milk production, and lower (P = 0.02) methane yield (24% lower in experiment 1 using GF and 8% lower in experiment 2 using RC). Added NDF increased (or tended to increase) methane yield for high MS, but not high GS diets (P = 0.02 for experiment 1 and P = 0.10 for experiment 2, forage type × NDF interaction). In the separate experiments the GF and RC methods detected similar dietary treatment effects on methane emission (expressed as g/d and g/kg DMI), although the magnitude of the difference varied between experiments for dietary treatments Overall methane emission and yield were 448 g/d and 20.9 g/kg DMI using GF for experiment 1 using GF and 458 g/d and 23.8 g/kg DMI for experiment 2 using RC, respectively
Character and interface shear strength of accreted ice on subcooled surfaces submerged in fuel
Sudden release of accreted ice in fuel systems could pose a serious challenge in aircraft operation. The resultant snowshower may reach the filter and fuel-oil heat exchanger, causing a restriction in fuel flow to the engine. It is fundamental to have an appreciation of the character and the interface shear strength of the accreted ice in aircraft fuel systems. This helps to recognise factors for the sudden release of the accreted ice and the intensity of the consequential snowshower. An experimental study was carried out to quantify the character and the interface shear strength of accreted ice on subcooled surfaces submerged in jet fuel. Ice was accreted on naked aluminium, painted aluminium and carbon fibre composite surfaces at various subcooled temperatures. The accreted ice was akin to fresh snow and exhibited soft and fluffy attributes. The character may be expressed quantitatively in terms of the porosity and was found to be c. 0·95. The ice weakly adhered to the substrate surfaces, and the interface shear strength was found to be c. 0·36Pa and c. 2·19Pa at the top surface and at the vertical surface of a specimen block, respectively. It was not possible to detect any variation in the porosity and the interface shear strength for different types of surface finishes and differences in water affnity in fuels due to the crude approach in the estimation of these parameters
Impact of Canadian tobacco packaging policy on quitline reach and reach equity
AbstractObjectiveTo examine the impact of the new Canadian tobacco package warning labels with a quitline toll-free phone number for seven provincial quitlines, focusing on treatment reach and reach equity in selected vulnerable groups.MethodsA quasi-experimental design assessed changes in new incoming caller characteristics, treatment reach for selected vulnerable sub-populations and the extent to which this reach is equitable, before and after the introduction of the labels in June, 2012. Administrative call data on smokers were collected at intake. Pre- and post-label treatment reach and reach equity differences were analysed by comparing the natural logarithms of the reach and reach equity statistics.ResultsDuring the six months following the introduction of the new warning labels, 86.4% of incoming new callers indicated seeing the quitline number on the labels. Treatment reach for the six-month period significantly improved compared to the same six-month period the year before from .042% to .114% (p<.0001) and reach equity significantly improved for young males (p<.0001) and those with high school education or less (p=.004).ConclusionsThe introduction of the new tobacco warning labels with a quitline toll-free number in Canada was associated with an increase in treatment reach. The toll-free number on tobacco warning labels aided in reducing tobacco related inequalities, such as improved reach equity for young males and those with high school or less education
Trends in Roll-Your-Own Smoking: Findings from the ITC Four-Country Survey (2002–2008)
Objective. To establish the trends in prevalence, and correlates, of roll-your-own (RYO) use in Canada, USA, UK and Australia, 2002–2008.
Methods. Participants were 19,456 cigarette smokers interviewed during the longitudinal International Tobacco Control (ITC) Four-Country Survey in Canada, USA, UK, and Australia. Results. “Predominant” RYO use (i.e., >50% of cigarettes smoked) increased significantly in the UK and USA as a proportion of all cigarette use (both P < .001) and in all countries as a proportion of any RYO use (all P < .010). Younger, financially stressed smokers are disproportionately contributing to “some” use (i.e., ≤50% of cigarettes smoked). Relative cost was the major reason given for using RYO, and predominant RYO use is consistently and significantly associated with low income. Conclusions. RYO market trends reflect the price advantages accruing to RYO (a product of favourable taxation regimes in some jurisdictions reinforced by the enhanced control over the amount of tobacco used), especially following the impact of the Global Financial Crisis; the availability of competing low-cost alternatives to RYO; accessibility of duty-free RYO tobacco; and tobacco industry niche marketing strategies. If policy makers want to ensure that the RYO option does not inhibit the fight to end the tobacco epidemic, especially amongst the disadvantaged, they need to reduce the price advantage, target additional health messages at (young) RYO users, and challenge niche marketing of RYO by the industry
XUV Frequency Combs via Femtosecond Enhancement Cavities
We review the current state of tabletop extreme ultraviolet (XUV) sources
based on high harmonic generation (HHG) in femtosecond enhancement cavities
(fsEC). Recent developments have enabled generation of high photon flux (1014
photons/sec) in the XUV, at high repetition rates (>50 MHz) and spanning the
spectral region from 40 nm - 120 nm. This level of performance has enabled
precision spectroscopy with XUV frequency combs and promises further
applications in XUV spectroscopic and photoemission studies. We discuss the
theory of operation and experimental details of the fsEC and XUV generation
based on HHG, including current technical challenges to increasing the photon
flux and maximum photon energy produced by this type of system. Current and
