    Toroidal Carbon Nanotubes with Encapsulated Atomic Metal Loops

    Toroidal carbon nanotubes can serve as hosts for encapsulated loops of atomic metal wires. Such composite structures have been analyzed using density functional theory for a semiconducting C120_{120} torus encapsulating chains of Fe, Au and Cu atoms. The sheathed metal necklaces form a zigzag structure and drops the HOMO/LUMO bandgap to less than 0.1 eV. The iron composite is ferromagnetic with a magnetic moment essentially the same as that of bcc iron. The azimuthal symmetry of these toroidal composites suggests that they may offer novel elecromagnetic properties not associated with straight, metal-encapsulated carbon nanotubes.Comment: 6 pages, 9 figure

    Elasticity-based determination of isovolumetric phases in the human heart

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background/Motivation</p> <p>To directly determine isovolumetric cardiac time intervals by magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) using the magnitude of the complex signal for deducing morphological information combined with the phase of the complex signal for tension-relaxation measurements.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Thirty-five healthy volunteers and 11 patients with relaxation abnormalities were subjected to transthoracic wave stimulation using vibrations of approximately 25 Hz. A <it>k</it>-space-segmented, ECG-gated gradient-recalled echo steady-state sequence with a 500-Hz bipolar motion-encoding gradient was used for acquiring a series of 360 complex images of a short-axis view of the heart at a frame rate of less than 5.2 ms. Magnitude images were employed for measuring the cross-sectional area of the left ventricle, while phase images were used for analyzing the amplitudes of the externally induced waves. The delay between the decrease in amplitude and onset of ventricular contraction was determined in all subjects and assigned to the time of isovolumetric tension. Conversely, the delay between the increase in wave amplitude and ventricular dilatation was used for measuring the time of isovolumetric elasticity relaxation.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Wave amplitudes decreased during systole and increased during diastole. The variation in wave amplitude occurred ahead of morphological changes. In healthy volunteers the time of isovolumetric elasticity relaxation was 75 ± 31 ms, which is significantly shorter than the time of isovolumetric tension of 136 ± 36 ms (<it>P </it>< 0.01). In patients with relaxation abnormalities (mild diastolic dysfunction, <it>n </it>= 11) isovolumetric elasticity relaxation was significantly prolonged, with 133 ± 57 ms (<it>P </it>< 0.01), whereas isovolumetric tension time was in the range of healthy controls (161 ± 45 ms; <it>P </it>= 0.053).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The complex MRE signal conveys complementary information on cardiac morphology and elasticity, which can be combined for directly measuring isovolumetric tension and elasticity relaxation in the human heart.</p

    Minority-carrier mobility enhancement in p+ InGaAs lattice matched to InP

    Minority electron mobilities in pf-In0.ssGac4, As have been measured with the zero field time-of-flight technique. The room-temperature (297 K) minority electron mobilities for p+-In,, 53Gac47A~ doped 0.9 and 3.1 x 10” cmm3 are found to be 2900 and 3300 cm* V-’ s-l, respectively. These are the first measurements to demonstrate enhancement in minority-carrier mobility as doping is increased for heavily doped Ines3Gae.4+s. This enhancement in mobility as doping is increased is similar to that observed in p+-GaAs, which has been attributed to reductions in plasmon and carrier-carrier scattering between minority electrons and majority holes

    OBJECTIVES: This study sought to assess whether patient age modifies the comparative effectiveness of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). BACKGROUND: Increasingly, CABG and PCI are performed in older patients to treat multivessel disease, but their comparative effectiveness is uncertain. METHODS: Individual data from 7,812 patients randomized in 1 of 10 clinical trials of CABG or PCI were pooled. Age was analyzed as a continuous variable in the primary analysis and was divided into tertiles for descriptive purposes (≤56.2 years, 56.3 to 65.1 years, ≥65.2 years). The outcomes assessed were death, myocardial infarction and repeat revascularization over complete follow-up, and angina at 1 year. RESULTS: Older patients were more likely to have hypertension, diabetes, and 3-vessel disease compared with younger patients (p < 0.001 for trend). Over a median follow-up of 5.9 years, the effect of CABG versus PCI on mortality varied according to age (interaction p < 0.01), with adjusted CABG-to-PCI hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals (CI) of 1.23 (95% CI: 0.95 to 1.59) in the youngest tertile; 0.89 (95% CI: 0.73 to 1.10) in the middle tertile; and 0.79 (95% CI: 0.67 to 0.94) in the oldest tertile. The CABG-to-PCI hazard ratio of less than 1 for patients 59 years of age and older. A similar interaction of age with treatment was present for the composite outcome of death or myocardial infarction. In contrast, patient age did not alter the comparative effectiveness of CABG and PCI on the outcomes of repeat revascularization or angina. CONCLUSIONS: Patient age modifies the comparative effectiveness of CABG and PCI on hard cardiac events, with CABG favored at older ages and PCI favored at younger ages

    A Mutational Hotspot in the 2B Domain of Human Hair Basic Keratin 6 (hHb6) in Monilethrix Patients

    Monilethrix is an inherited hair dystrophy in which affected, fragile, hairs have an unique beaded morphology. Ultrastructural studies suggest a defect in filament structure in the cortex of the hair, and the hard keratins of hair and nail are thus candidate genes. In several families with autosomal dominant monilethrix, the disorder has been linked to the type II keratin gene cluster at chromosome 12q13. Recently, causative mutations in the critical helix termination motif in the 2B domain of the human hair basic keratin 6 (hHb6) have been identified. We now report the results of sequencing this domain in 13 unrelated families or cases with monilethrix. Five of the 13 had the same mutation as previously found, a G to A transversion leading to a lysine for glutamic acid substitution (E413K) in the 2B domain (residue 117 of the 2B helix) of hHb6. The mutation was confirmed by a restriction fragment length polymorphism assay developed for this purpose, and, as this mutation is evidently a common cause of the syndrome, for use in screening other cases. In eight families or cases, however, including three in whom linkage data are consistent with a defect at the type II keratin locus, no mutation was found in this domain of hHb6

    LRAD – The Radiometer for the Lunar South Pole Hopper μNOVA.

    Permanently shadowed regions (PSRs) are present at the Lunar poles. The surface temperature inside a PSR can remain below 110K, low enough fow stable water ice to exist in vacuum. The presence of ater ice at the Lunar Poles has been indicated by remote sensing bservations, in particular by the Lunar Prospector, LCROSS, and LRO missions. As part of the NASA Commerical Lunar Payload Service program, the Nova-C lander will be build and operated by the US-based company Intuitive Machines. Nova-C will land near the Lunar south pole for in-situ inverstigations of potential volatiles in the regolith. Nova-C will carry the S.P. Hopper to the Moon which will in a sequence of short flights land within a PSR inside Marston crater (informal name) close to a potential landing site for the Artemis Astronauts [7]. The Hopper will map the lunar surface with two cameras and a themal infrared radiometer (LRAD)
