Transfer function approach to collective mode dynamics in a Nd:YAG laser

    Get PDF
For a multimode laser operating in a steady state regime with small-signal gain modulation, transfer functions are measured for both total intensity and intensities of individual modes. A quantitative picture of the phase clustering of contributions from each cavity mode to the collective mode dynamics is obtained from the transfer functions in the pole-residue representation.Stamatescu, L. The PSCz Galaxy Power Spectrum Compared to N-Body Simulations

    Get PDF
By comparing the PSCz galaxy power spectrum with haloes from nested and phased N-body simulations, we try to understand how IRAS infrared-selected galaxies populate dark-matter haloes. We pay special attention to the way we identify haloes in the simulations.Comment: 2 pages, 1 figure, to appear in "The IGM/Galaxy Connection: The Distribution of Baryons at z=0," eds. J.L. The Conference on High Temperature Electronics

    Get PDF
The status of and directions for high temperature electronics research and development were evaluated. Major objectives were to (1) identify common user needs; (2) put into perspective the directions for future work; and (3) address the problem of bringing to practical fruition the results of these efforts. More than half of the presentations dealt with materials and devices, rather than circuits and systems. Conference session titles and an example of a paper presented in each session are (1) User requirements: High temperature electronics applications in space explorations; (2) Devices: Passive components for high temperature operation; (3) Circuits and systems: Process characteristics and design methods for a 300 degree QUAD or AMP; and (4) Packaging: Presently available energy supply for high temperature environment

How Does Advertising Affect Market Performance? The Case of Generic Advertising

    Get PDF
The effect of advertising on market performance has been a long-standing debate. Advertising that increases the dispersion of consumers’ valuations for advertised goods raises the market power of firms, while advertising that decreases the dispersion of consumers’ valuations leads to narrower price-cost margins and superior performance in markets for advertised goods. Numerous challenges confound the empirical identification of advertising effects on market performance. This paper proposes a simple method that relies on the revealed preferences of firms participating in generic advertising programs. Generic advertising programs provide a unique window through which to observe advertising effects on market performance, because changes in the dispersion of consumers’ valuations systematically redistributes rents among firms according to observable characteristics on producer size. We examine producer attitudes towards generic advertising in the “Beef. It’s What’s for Dinner” campaign of the U.S. Beef Checkoff program and find the likelihood a producer favors an expansion of the advertising program increases in operating scale. This finding is consistent with advertising effects that have led to a decrease in the dispersion of consumers’ valuations for beef products and a commensurate increase in market performance.Advertising, Oligopoly, Marketing, L1, M37,

    Local light-ray rotation

We present a sheet structure that rotates the local ray direction through an arbitrary angle around the sheet normal. The sheet structure consists of two parallel Dove-prism sheets, each of which flips one component of the local direction of transmitted light rays. Together, the two sheets rotate transmitted light rays around the sheet normal. We show that the direction under which a point light source is seen is given by a Mobius transform. We illustrate some of the properties with movies calculated by ray-tracing software.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figure

Noise data for a twin-engine commercial jet aircraft flying conventional, steep, and two-segment approaches

    Get PDF
Center-line noise measurements of a twin-engine commercial jet aircraft were made during steep landing approach profiles, and during two-segment approach profiles for comparison with similar measurements made during conventional approaches. The steep and two-segment approaches showed significant noise reductions when compared with the -3 deg base line. The measured noise data were also used to develop a method for estimating the noise under the test aircraft at thrust and altitude conditions typical of current landing procedures and of landing procedures under development for the Advanced Air Traffic Control System
