Critical and off-critical studies of the Baxter-Wu model with general toroidal boundary conditions
The operator content of the Baxter-Wu model with general toroidal boundary
conditions is calculated analytically and numerically. These calculations were
done by relating the partition function of the model with the generating
function of a site-colouring problem in a hexagonal lattice. Extending the
original Bethe-ansatz solution of the related colouring problem we are able to
calculate the eigenspectra of both models by solving the associated
Bethe-ansatz equations. We have also calculated, by exploring the conformal
invariance at the critical point, the mass ratios of the underlying massive
theory governing the Baxter-Wu model in the vicinity of its critical point.Comment: 32 pages latex, to appear in J. Phys. A: Math. Ge
Using Electronic Drug Monitor Feedback to Improve Adherence to Antiretroviral Therapy Among HIV-Positive Patients in China
Effective antiretroviral therapy (ART) requires excellent adherence. Little is known about how to improve ART adherence in many HIV/AIDS-affected countries, including China. We therefore assessed an adherence intervention among HIV-positive patients in southwestern China. Eighty subjects were enrolled and monitored for 6 months. Sixty-eight remaining subjects were randomized to intervention/control arms. In months 7–12, intervention subjects were counseled using EDM feedback; controls continued with standard of care. Among randomized subjects, mean adherence and CD4 count were 86.8 vs. 83.8% and 297 vs. 357 cells/μl in intervention vs. control subjects, respectively. At month 12, among 64 subjects who completed the trial, mean adherence had risen significantly among intervention subjects to 96.5% but remained unchanged in controls. Mean CD4 count rose by 90 cells/μl and declined by 9 cells/μl among intervention and control subjects, respectively. EDM feedback as a counseling tool appears promising for management of HIV and other chronic diseases.Boston University and the Office of Health and Nutrition of the United States Agency for International Development (GHS-A-00-03-00030-00); World Health Organization; United States Centers for Disease Control; National Institutes of Health, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (K23 AI 62208); Mid-Career Mentoring Award (K24 RR020300

Order and disorder in the triangular-lattice t-J-V model at 2/3 electron density
Motivated by the recent discovery of superconductivity in NaCoOHO, we use series expansion methods and cluster mean-field theory to
study spontaneous charge order, Neel order, ferromagnetic order, dimer order
and phase-separation in the triangular-lattice t-J-V model at 2/3 electron
density. We find that for t<0, the charge ordered state, with electrons
preferentially occupying a honeycomb lattice, is very robust. Quite
surprisingly, hopping to the third sublattice can even enhance Neel order. At
large negative t and small V, the Nagaoka ferromagnetic state is obtained. For
large positive t, charge and Neel order vanish below a critical V, giving rise
to an itinerant antiferromagnetically correlated state.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Mean Field Renormalization Group for the Boundary Magnetization of Strip Clusters
We analyze in some detail a recently proposed transfer matrix mean field
approximation which yields the exact critical point for several two dimensional
nearest neighbor Ising models. For the square lattice model we show explicitly
that this approximation yields not only the exact critical point, but also the
exact boundary magnetization of a semi--infinite Ising model, independent of
the size of the strips used. Then we develop a new mean field renormalization
group strategy based on this approximation and make connections with finite
size scaling. Applying our strategy to the quadratic Ising and three--state
Potts models we obtain results for the critical exponents which are in
excellent agreement with the exact ones. In this way we also clarify some
advantages and limitations of the mean field renormalization group approach.Comment: 16 pages (plain TeX) + 8 figures (PostScript, appended),
