Problem solving is one of the goals in learning mathematics. In solving problems students must use steps to solve them, including in solving story problems. The ability needed to solve a story problem is not only specific skills or algorithms, but also the ability to prepare a plan or strategy that will be used in solving problems. The purpose of this study is to describe the use of Polya problem solving steps by students in solving story problems on mixed integer operation material. This research is a descriptive qualitative research. The subjects of this study were four students chosen randomly or randomly. While this research instrument is a written test about a story that has been validated by a mathematics teacher and unstructured interviews. Based on the analysis obtained shows that not all students use Polya's problem solving steps in solving story problems, this is indicated by the way students work on the results of written tests and interviews

AbstractThis study aims to determine type of student errors in solving word problem of LCM and HCF based on Newman's procedures. Subjects in this study were students of class VII MTS Darul Amin Pontianak, totaling 17 people. The method used in this research is descriptive method with a case study approach. Data collection techniques used in this study were written tests. The results showed students made mistakes answering questions on each Newman procedure. In first question, 3 students make comprehension errors (2 students understood the LCM  problem as a HCF problem, 1 student can't continue the answer), 9 students make transformation errors (8 students solve LCM problems only takes the same prime factor from both numbers that have the highest rank., 1 students solve LCM with multiplying same smallest multiple from both numbers), 1 students make encoding errors (didn’t write the final answer according to the question request). In the second question, 2 students make comprehension errors (solve HCF problem by taking all the prime factors with the highest rank.), 1 students make process skills errors (can’t do multiplication operations correctly), 4 students make encoding errors (student didn’t write the final answer according to the question request) Keywords: HCF, LCM, Newman’s Procedure, Word Proble

Problematizing ‘productive citizenship’ within rehabilitation services: insights from three studies

    Get PDF
Background: The idea that everyone should strive to be a ‘productive citizen’ is a dominant societal discourse. However, critiques highlight that common definitions of productive citizenship focus on forms of participation and contribution that many people experiencing disability find difficult or impossible to realize, resulting in marginalization. Since rehabilitation services strive for enablement, social participation, and inclusiveness, it is important to question whether these things are achieved within the realities of practice. Our aim was to do this by examining specific examples of how ‘productive citizenship’ appears in rehabilitation services. Methods: This article draws examples from three research studies in two countries to highlight instances in which narrow understandings of productive citizenship employed in rehabilitation services can have unintended marginalizing effects. Each example is presented as a vignette. Discussion: The vignettes help us reflect on marginalization at the level of individual, community and society that arises from narrow interpretations of ‘productive citizenship’ in rehabilitation services. They also provide clues as to how productive citizenship could be envisaged differently. We argue that rehabilitation services, because of their influence at critical junctures in peoples’ lives, could be an effective site of social change regarding how productive citizenship is understood in wider society.Implications for rehabilitation ‘Productive citizenship’, or the interpretation of which activities count as contributions to society, has a very restrictive definition within rehabilitation services. This restrictive definition is reflected in both policy and practices, and influences what counts as ‘legitimate’ rehabilitation and support, marginalizing options for a ‘good life’ that fall outside of it. Rehabilitation can be a site for social change; one way forward involves advocating for broader understandings of what counts as ‘productive citizenship’

AbstractThis research aimed to describe students’ mathematical reasoning ability on the solid geometry matter of XII Grade MIPA SMA Negeri 4 Pontianak. The research method used was descriptive and the form of this research was case study. Subject of this research was students of XII MIPA 2 Class which consist 32 students. The techniques of data collection were mathematical reasoning ability test and interview. The results in this research shows that students’ mathematical reasoning ability fall into the medium, low, and very low category, because there are 7 students (21,88%) were in very low category, 6 students (18,75%) were in low category, 17 students (53,13%) were in medium category, 2 students (6,25%) were in high category, and no students (0%) were in very high category. Some affect the students mathematical reasoning ability were in medium, low, and very low category because some students have not been able to form a conjecture and gives reason on their conjecture, most of the students can’t mathematic manipulating, and some students can’t finding a patterns against a mathematical phenomenon. Keywords: Mathematical Reasoning, Mathematical Reasoning Ability, Solid Geometr

AbstractMathematics is a subject that contains a lot of abstract ideas and concepts and bases itself on agreements and uses a deductive mindset consistently. Mathematics is a science that has basic abstract objects in the form of facts, concepts, operations, and principle. This research aimed to describe what kinds of errors students make on quadratic function material of SMA Mujahidin Pontianak. The research method used in this study is descriptive. The techniques used were measurement techniques and direct communication techniques with data collection tools student’s errors test and interview guide. The subject of this research was students of SMA Negeri Mujahidin Pontianak. Based on the results of research and description it can be concluded that the types of errors students make in solving quadratic functions are: comprehension errors, process skill errors, and careless errors. These errors occur because of weak understanding of concepts, lack of mastery of principles, and lack of attention in performing calculations. Keywords: Description, Student Errors, Quadratic Function

Assembling activity/setting participation with disabled young people

Rehabilitation research investigating activity participation has been largely conducted in a realist tradition that under-theorises the relationship between persons, technologies, and socio-material places. In this Canadian study we used a post-critical approach to explore activity/setting participation with 19 young people aged 14 to 23 years with complex communication and/or mobility impairments. Methods included integrated photo-elicitation, interviews, and participant observations of community-based activities. We present our results using the conceptual lens of assemblages to surface how different combinations of bodies, social meanings, and technologies enabled or constrained particular activities. Assemblages were analysed in terms of how they organised what was possible and practical for participants and their families in different contexts. The results illuminate how young people negotiated activity needs and desires in particular ‘spacings’ each with its own material, temporal, and social constraints and affordances. The focus on assemblages provides a dynamic analysis of how dis/abilities are enacted in and across geotemporal spaces, and avoids a reductive focus on evaluating the accessibility of static environmental features. In doing so the study reveals possible ‘lines of flight’ for healthcare, rehabilitation, and social care practices
