    Changing patterns of religious affiliation, church attendance and marriage across five areas of Europe since the early 1980s: trends and associations

    This study draws on three waves of the European Values Survey (conducted between 1981 and 1984, between 1989 and 1993, and between 1999 and 2004) across five countries for which full data are available (Great Britain, Italy, the Netherlands, Northern Ireland, Spain, and Sweden) in order to address five research questions. Question one examined changes in religious affiliation. Across all five countries, the proportions of the non-affiliated increased. Question two examined changes in church attendance. Across all five countries, the proportions of the non-attenders increased. Question three examined changes in marital status. Across all five countries the proportions of the population checking the category 'married' declined, although in Spain the decline was marginal. Question four examined the association between religious affiliation and being married. The religious affiliated were more likely to be married than the non-affiliated. Question five examined the association between church attendance and being married. Weekly attenders were more likely to be married than the non-attenders. Overall these data support the close association between religion and marriage across five European countries (where there are very different religious climates) and support the hypothesis that changing religious values and changing family values go hand-in-hand

    Background: Prior studies have shown that most conference submissions fail to be published. Understanding factors that facilitate publication may be of benefit to authors. Using data from the Canadian Conference on Medical Education (CCME), our goal was to identify characteristics of conference submissions that predict the likelihood of publication with a specific focus on the utility of peer-review ratings. Methods: Study characteristics (scholarship type, methodology, population, sites, institutions) from all oral abstracts from 2011-2015 and peer-review ratings for 2014-2015 were extracted by two raters. Publication data was obtained using online database searches. The impact of variables on publication success was analyzed using logistic regressions. Results: Of 531 abstracts with peer-review ratings, 162 (31%) were published. Of the 9 analyzed variables, those associated with a greater odds of publication were: multiple vs. single institutions (odds ratio (OR) = 1.72), post-graduate research vs. others (OR=1.81) and peer-review ratings (OR=1.60). Factors with decreased odds of publication were curriculum development (OR=0.17) and innovation vs. others (OR=0.22).     Conclusion: Similar to other studies, the publication rate of CCME presentations is low. However, peer ratings were predictive of publication success suggesting that ratings could be a useful form of feedback to authors.  Contexte : Des études ont montré que la plupart des résumés soumis pour présentations orales ne sont pas ultérieurement publiés. Il pourrait être utile aux auteurs de comprendre les facteurs qui favorisent la publication. À l’aide de données provenant de la Conférence canadienne sur l’éducation médicale (CCÉM), notre objectif était d’identifier les caractéristiques des résumés permettant de prédire les chances de publication et en particulier l’utilité des cotes attribuées par les réviseurs. Méthodologie : Les caractéristiques des études (type de projet d’érudition, méthodologie, population, établissements, institutions) de tous les résumés de présentation orale soumis pour les conférences de 2011 à 2015 et les cotes attribuées par les réviseurs entre 2014 et 2015 ont été extraites par deux évaluateurs. On a obtenu des données de publication en faisant des recherches dans des bases de données en ligne.  L’effet des variables sur le potentiel de publication a été examiné à l’aide de régressions logistiques. Résultats : Au total, 953 résumés ont été révisé des années 2011 à 2015. Le taux de publication était de 30.5% (291/953) en somme. Des 531 résumés ayant été évalués des pairs, entre 2014 et 2015, 162 (31 %) ont été publiés. Parmi les neuf variables analysées, celles qui ont été associées à un nombre élevé de chances de publication étaient les suivantes : projet multi-institutionnel par rapport à institution unique (risque relatif (RR) = 1,72), travaux de recherche post-graduée par rapport à d’autres types (RR = 1,81) et présence de cotes attribuées par les réviseurs (RR = 1,6). Les facteurs associés à des moindres chances de publication étaient les suivants : articles portant sur le développement de cursus (RR = 0,17) et les innovations, par rapport à d’autres (RR = 0,22).     Conclusion :  Comme ce fut le cas pour d’autres études, le taux de publication à la suite d’une présentation au CCME est faible.  Cependant, les cotes attribuées par les réviseurs permettaient de prédire les chances de publication ce qui semble indiquer que les cotes pourraient constituer une forme de rétroaction utile aux auteurs

    Factors in AIDS Dementia Complex Trial Design: Results and Lessons from the Abacavir Trial

    OBJECTIVES: To determine the efficacy of adding abacavir (Ziagen, ABC) to optimal stable background antiretroviral therapy (SBG) to AIDS dementia complex (ADC) patients and address trial design. DESIGN: Phase III randomized, double-blind placebo-controlled trial. SETTING: Tertiary outpatient clinics. PARTICIPANTS: ADC patients on SBG for ≥8 wk. INTERVENTIONS: Participants were randomized to ABC or matched placebo for 12 wk. OUTCOME MEASURES: The primary outcome measure was the change in the summary neuropsychological Z score (NPZ). Secondary measures were HIV RNA and the immune activation markers β-2 microglobulin, soluble tumor necrosis factor (TNF) receptor 2, and quinolinic acid. RESULTS: 105 participants were enrolled. The median change in NPZ at week 12 was +0.76 for the ABC + SBG and +0.63 for the SBG groups (p = 0.735). The lack of efficacy was unlikely related to possible limited antiviral efficacy of ABC: at week 12 more ABC than placebo participants had plasma HIV RNA ≤400 copies/mL (p = 0.002). There were, however, other factors. Two thirds of patients were subsequently found to have had baseline resistance to ABC. Second, there was an unanticipated beneficial effect of SBG that extended beyond 8 wk to 5 mo, thereby rendering some of the patients at baseline unstable. Third, there was an unexpectedly large variability in neuropsychological performance that underpowered the study. Fourth, there was a relative lack of activity of ADC: 56% of all patients had baseline cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) HIV-1 RNA <100 copies/mL and 83% had CSF β-2 microglobulin <3 nmol/L at baseline. CONCLUSIONS: The addition of ABC to SBG for ADC patients was not efficacious, possibly because of the inefficacy of ABC per se, baseline drug resistance, prolonged benefit from existing therapy, difficulties with sample size calculations, and lack of disease activity. Assessment of these trial design factors is critical in the design of future ADC trials

    The three main monotheistic religions and gm food technology: an overview of perspectives

    Abstract Background Public acceptance of genetically modified crops is partly rooted in religious views. However, the views of different religions and their potential influence on consumers' decisions have not been systematically examined and summarized in a brief overview. We review the positions of the Judaism, Islam and Christianity – the three major monotheistic religions to which more than 55% of humanity adheres to – on the controversies aroused by GM technology. Discussion The article establishes that there is no overarching consensus within the three religions. Overall, however, it appears that mainstream theology in all three religions increasingly tends towards acceptance of GM technology per se, on performing GM research, and on consumption of GM foods. These more liberal approaches, however, are predicated on there being rigorous scientific, ethical and regulatory scrutiny of research and development of such products, and that these products are properly labeled. Summary We conclude that there are several other interests competing with the influence exerted on consumers by religion. These include the media, environmental activists, scientists and the food industry, all of which function as sources of information and shapers of perception for consumers

    Religiosity and corporate financial reporting: evidence from a European country

    Using a sample of Portuguese privately-held firms, I examine the association between religiosity and financial reporting quality. The results suggest that firms headquartered in Portuguese areas with strong religious adherence and in the core area of the Portuguese religious cult (the district where the Fátima Sanctuary is located) generally experience lower incidence of earnings management. I provide further evidence that the results are robust to alternative measures of religiosity, and that are not driven by firms headquartered in rural areas. I also conclude that religious social norms, together with other forms of external financial monitoring, represent a mechanism for reducing costly agency conflicts. While the religious practice declined in the last decades in Portugal, I provide evidence that, even in a such context, religiosity is associated with reduced acceptance of unethical business practices, in particular, with reduced acceptance of aggressive accounting practices.I thank participants of the Second Paris Financial Management Conference (PFMC, 2014) and the 3RD Workshop on Business Ethics (EIASM, 2015) for their helpful insights.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Reconceptualizing Profit-Orientation in Management: A Karmic View on "Return on Investment" Calculations

    From the perspective of the present day, Puritan-inspired capitalism seems to have succeeded globally, including in India. Connected to this, short-term profit-orientation in management seems to constrain the scope of different management approaches in a tight ideological corset. This article discusses the possibility of replacing this Puritan doctrine with the crucial elements of Indian philosophy: Karma and samsara. In doing so, the possibility of revising the guiding principles in capitalist management becomes conceivable, namely the monetary focus of profit-orientation and its short-term orientation. This perspective allows a detachment of the concept of profit from the realm of money, as the seemingly only objectifiable measure of profit. Furthermore it allows a removal of the expectation that every "investment" has to directly "pay off". A karmic view offers management a possible facility for being more caring about the needs and fates of other stakeholders, as profit-orientation would no longer be attached as a factual constraint to merely accumulate money.
