This thesis proposes a multidimensional analysis of the effect of social capital on the tourism sector dynamics at the territorial level. The objective of this work is to question the capacity of local actors to mobilize their stocks of social capital in a dynamic of development of the tourism offer based on local resources. For this we use the theoretical framework of social capital theory as well as the territorial economy, in order to illuminate new perspectives on the potential of tourism development based on local resources. This framework is applied to the understanding of the links between social capital and the tourist offer in a seaside resort of the Syrian coastal region. To enable us to see the role of social capital in the dynamics of the local tourism offer in the studied seaside resort, we proceed with the development of an indicator of '' the effect of social capital on the tourist offer ''. We also present a study of a network of actors from the resort engaged in the same activity. In this study we discern how norms and principles such as reciprocity or reputation affect the activity of actors.Different levels of conclusions can be drawn from our work: on the role of social capital in the transformation of the local economy; or on the importance of the family in financing tourism projects; or on the deficiency of institutional capital.

Tuberculosis is a major threat for mankind and the emergence of resistance strain of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) against first line antibiotics makes it lethal for human civilization. In this study, we have synthesized different diaryl urea derivatives targeting the inhibition of mycolic acid biosynthesis. Among the 39 synthesized molecules, compounds 46, 57, 58 and 86 showed MIC values ≤ 10 μg/ml against H37Rv and mc26030 strains. The best molecule with a methyl at ortho position of the first aromatic ring and prenyl group at the meta position of the second aromatic ring showed the MIC value of 5.2 μg/ml and 1 μg/ml against H37Rv and mc26030 respectively, with mammalian cytotoxicity of 163.4 μg/ml. The effective compounds showed selective inhibitory effect on mycolic acid (epoxy mycolate) biosynthesis in14C-radiolabelled assay. At the same time these molecules also executed their potent immunomodulatory activity by up-regulation of IFN-γ and IL-12 and down-regulation of IL-10.Fil: Velappan, Anand Babu. An Innovative Plate Concept for Rotational Guided Growth: A Porcine Pilot Study

    Get PDF
BackgroundRotational deformities in children are currently treated with an osteotomy, acute de-rotation, and surgical fixation. Meanwhile, guided growth is now the gold standard in pediatric coronal deformity correction. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of a novel implant intended for rotational guided growth (RotOs Plate) in a large porcine animal model.MethodologyA submuscular plate was inserted on the medial and lateral aspect of the distal femoral physis of the left femur in 6 pigs. Each plate was anchored with a screw in the metaphysis and epiphysis respectively. The plates were expected to rotate the femur externally. The right femur acted as a control in a paired design. The animals were housed for 12 weeks after surgery. MRI scanning of both femora was performed before euthanasia after 12 weeks. Rotation was determined as the difference in the femoral version on MRI between the operated and non-operated femur after 12 weeks.ResultsExternal rotation in all operated femurs was observed. The mean difference in the femoral version on MRI between operated and non-operated femurs was 12.5° (range 9°-16°). No significant changes in axial growth were detected.ConclusionsThis study shows encouraging results regarding rotational guided growth, which may replace current invasive surgical treatment options for malrotation in children. However, further studies addressing potential secondary deformities are paramount and should be carried out

Resistance to thiacetazone derivatives active against Mycobacterium abscessus involves mutations in the MmpL5 transcriptional repressor MAB_4384

Available chemotherapeutic options are very limited against Mycobacterium abscessus, which imparts a particular challenge in the treatment of cystic fibrosis (CF) patients infected with this rapid-growing mycobacterium. New drugs are urgently needed against this emerging pathogen, but the discovery of active chemotypes has not been performed intensively. Interestingly, however, the repurposing of thiacetazone (TAC), a drug once used to treat tuberculosis, has increased following the deciphering of its mechanism of action and the detection of significantly more potent analogues. We, therefore, report studies performed on a library of 38 TAC-related derivatives, previously evaluated for their antitubercular activity. Several compounds, including D6, D15 and D17, were found to exhibit potent activity in vitro against M. abscessus, Mycobacterium massiliense and Mycobacterium bolletii clinical isolates from CF and non-CF patients. Similarly to TAC in M. tuberculosis, the three analogues act as pro-drugs in M. abscessus, requiring bioactivation by the EthA enzyme, MAB_0985. Importantly, mutations in the transcriptional TetR repressor MAB_4384, with concomitant upregulation of the divergently oriented adjacent genes encoding an MmpS5/MmpL5 efflux pump system, accounted for high cross-resistance levels among all three compounds. Overall, this study uncovered a new mechanism of drug resistance in M. abscessus and demonstrated that simple structural optimization of the TAC scaffold can lead to the development of new drug candidates against M. abscessus infections
