Trends have emerged from these court cases, further defining the limits of trade secrets protection and attempting to carve out uniform rules concerning such protection.     Fault detection and prediction with application to rotating machinery

    In this thesis, the detection and prediction of faults in rotating machinery is undertaken and presented in two papers. In the first paper, Principal Component Analysis (PCA), a well known data-driven dimension reduction technique, is applied to data for normal operation and four fault conditions from a one-half horsepower centrifugal water pump. Fault isolation in this scheme is done by observing the location of the data points in the Principal Component domain, and the time to failure (TTF) is calculated by applying statistical regression on the resulting PC scores. The application of the proposed scheme demonstrated that PCA was able to detect and isolate all four faults. Additionally, the TTF calculation for the impeller failure was found to yield satisfactory results. On the other hand, in the second paper, the fault detection and failure prediction are done by using a model based approach which utilizes a nonlinear observer consisting of an online approximator in discrete-time (OLAD) and a robust adaptive term. Once a fault has been detected, both the OLAD and the robust adaptive term are initiated and the OLAD then utilizes its update law to learn the unknown dynamics of the encountered fault. While in similar applications it is common to use neural networks to be used for the OLAD, in this paper an Artificial Immune System (AIS) is used for the OLAD. The proposed approach was verified through implementation on data from an axial piston pump.     In order to protect the economic interests of the United States, the Economic Espionage Act was enacted in 1996. Although intended to prevent and deter trade secret theft, the EEA is limited to criminal prosecutions. Critical amendments to the EEA are required to create a civil cause of action in the new information-based economy and the international marketplace. The following proposed amendments to the EEA provide a federal civil cause of action, allowing companies to protect trade secret assets and to ensure the continued growth and protection of trade secret assets in the international marketplace

    In order to protect the national and economic interests of the United States, the Economic Espionage Act was enacted in 1996. Although intended to prevent and deter trade secret theft, the EEA is limited to criminal prosecutions. Critical amendments to the EEA are required to create a civil cause of action in the new information-based economy and the international marketplace. In 2008, the author recommended two critical amendments to the Economic Espionage Act that have been vetted and have been the subject of legislative proposals for the past 7 years. The author now revisits developments since 2008 and underscores the urgency and the compelling national and economic interests in amending the Economic Espionage Act of 1996 in the 114th Congress

    The catalytic removal of ammonia and nitrogen oxides from spacecabin atmospheres

    Investigations were made on methods for the removal of ammonia and to a lesser extent nitrogen oxides in low concentrations from air. The catalytic oxidation of ammonia was studied over a temperature range of 250 F to 600 F and a concentration range 20 ppm to 500 ppm. Of the catalysts studied, 0.5 percent ruthenium supported on alumina was found to be superior. This material is active at temperatures as low as 250 F and was found to produce much less nitrous oxide than the other two active catalysts, platinum on alumina and Hopcalite. A quantitative design model was developed which will permit the performance of an oxidizer to be calculated. The ruthenium was found to be relatively insensitive to low concentrations of water and to oxygen concentration between 21 percent and 100 percent. Hydrogen sulfide was found to be a poison when injected in relatively large quantities. The adsorption of ammonia by copper sulfate treated silica gel was investigated at temperatures of 72 F and 100 F. A quantitative model was developed for predicting adsorption bed behavior

    Computer-assisted polyp matching between optical colonoscopy and CT colonography: a phantom study

    Potentially precancerous polyps detected with CT colonography (CTC) need to be removed subsequently, using an optical colonoscope (OC). Due to large colonic deformations induced by the colonoscope, even very experienced colonoscopists find it difficult to pinpoint the exact location of the colonoscope tip in relation to polyps reported on CTC. This can cause unduly prolonged OC examinations that are stressful for the patient, colonoscopist and supporting staff. We developed a method, based on monocular 3D reconstruction from OC images, that automatically matches polyps observed in OC with polyps reported on prior CTC. A matching cost is computed, using rigid point-based registration between surface point clouds extracted from both modalities. A 3D printed and painted phantom of a 25 cm long transverse colon segment was used to validate the method on two medium sized polyps. Results indicate that the matching cost is smaller at the correct corresponding polyp between OC and CTC: the value is 3.9 times higher at the incorrect polyp, comparing the correct match between polyps to the incorrect match. Furthermore, we evaluate the matching of the reconstructed polyp from OC with other colonic endoluminal surface structures such as haustral folds and show that there is a minimum at the correct polyp from CTC. Automated matching between polyps observed at OC and prior CTC would facilitate the biopsy or removal of true-positive pathology or exclusion of false-positive CTC findings, and would reduce colonoscopy false-negative (missed) polyps.     Artificial Immune System-Based Diagnostics and Prognostics Scheme and its Experimental Verification

    In this paper, a novel fault diagnostics and prediction (FDP) scheme is introduced by using artificial immune system (AIS) as an online approximator for a class of nonlinear discrete-time systems. Traditionally, AIS is considered as an offline tool for fault detection (FD). However, in this paper, AIS is utilized as an online approximator in discrete time (OLAD) along with a robust adaptive term in the proposed fault diagnostics observer. using the fact that the system outputs are alone measurable, an output residual is determined by comparing the observer and system outputs and a fault is detected if this output residual exceeds a predefined threshold. Upon detection, the OLADs are initiated to learn the unknown fault dynamics while the robust adaptive term ensures asymptotic convergence of the output residual for a state fault whereas a bounded result for an output fault. Additionally, for prognostics purposes, the parameter update law for AIS is used to estimate the time-to-failure (TTF). Finally, the performance of the proposed FDP scheme is demonstrated experimentally on an axial piston pump testbed for two failure modes. © 2011 IEEE

    Patterns of intron sequence evolution in Drosophila are dependent upon length and GC content

    BACKGROUND: Introns comprise a large fraction of eukaryotic genomes, yet little is known about their functional significance. Regulatory elements have been mapped to some introns, though these are believed to account for only a small fraction of genome wide intronic DNA. No consistent patterns have emerged from studies that have investigated general levels of evolutionary constraint in introns. RESULTS: We examine the relationship between intron length and levels of evolutionary constraint by analyzing inter-specific divergence at 225 intron fragments in Drosophila melanogaster and Drosophila simulans, sampled from a broad distribution of intron lengths. We document a strongly negative correlation between intron length and divergence. Interestingly, we also find that divergence in introns is negatively correlated with GC content. This relationship does not account for the correlation between intron length and divergence, however, and may simply reflect local variation in mutational rates or biases. CONCLUSION: Short introns make up only a small fraction of total intronic DNA in the genome. Our finding that long introns evolve more slowly than average implies that, while the majority of introns in the Drosophila genome may experience little or no selective constraint, most intronic DNA in the genome is likely to be evolving under considerable constraint. Our results suggest that functional elements may be ubiquitous within longer introns and that these introns may have a more general role in regulating gene expression than previously appreciated. Our finding that GC content and divergence are negatively correlated in introns has important implications for the interpretation of the correlation between divergence and levels of codon bias observed in Drosophila
