Development of advanced techniques for rotorcraft state estimation and parameter identification
An integrated methodology for rotorcraft system identification consists of rotorcraft mathematical modeling, three distinct data processing steps, and a technique for designing inputs to improve the identifiability of the data. These elements are as follows: (1) a Kalman filter smoother algorithm which estimates states and sensor errors from error corrupted data. Gust time histories and statistics may also be estimated; (2) a model structure estimation algorithm for isolating a model which adequately explains the data; (3) a maximum likelihood algorithm for estimating the parameters and estimates for the variance of these estimates; and (4) an input design algorithm, based on a maximum likelihood approach, which provides inputs to improve the accuracy of parameter estimates. Each step is discussed with examples to both flight and simulated data cases

Bino Dark Matter and Big Bang Nucleosynthesis in the Constrained E6SSM with Massless Inert Singlinos
We discuss a new variant of the E6 inspired supersymmetric standard model
(E6SSM) in which the two inert singlinos are exactly massless and the dark
matter candidate has a dominant bino component. A successful relic density is
achieved via a novel mechanism in which the bino scatters inelastically into
heavier inert Higgsinos during the time of thermal freeze-out. The two massless
inert singlinos contribute to the effective number of neutrino species at the
time of Big Bang Nucleosynthesis, where the precise contribution depends on the
mass of the Z' which keeps them in equilibrium. For example for mZ' > 1300 GeV
we find Neff \approx 3.2, where the smallness of the additional contribution is
due to entropy dilution. We study a few benchmark points in the constrained
E6SSM with massless inert singlinos to illustrate this new scenario.Comment: 24 pages, revised for publication in JHE
Are rivers just bigstreams? Using a pulse method to measure nitrogen demand in a large river
Given recent focus on large rivers as conduits for excess nutrients to coastal zones, their role in processing and retaining nutrients has been overlooked and understudied. Empirical measurements of nutrient uptake in large rivers are lacking, despite a substantial body of knowledge on nutrient transport and removal in smaller streams. Researchers interested in nutrient transport by rivers (discharge \u3e10000 L/s) are left to extrapolate riverine nutrient demand using a modeling framework or a mass balance approach. To begin to fill this knowledge gap, we present data using a pulse method to measure inorganic nitrogen. (N) transport and removal in the Upper Snake River, Wyoming, USA (seventh order, discharge 12000 L/s). We found that the Upper Snake had surprisingly high biotic demand relative to smaller streams in the same river network for both ammonium (NH4+) and nitrate (NO3-). Placed in the context of a meta-analysis of previously published nutrient uptake studies, these data suggest that large rivers may have similar biotic demand for N as smaller tributaries. We also found that demand for different forms of inorganic N (NH4+ vs. NO3-) scaled differently with stream size. Data from rivers like the Upper Snake and larger are essential for effective water quality management at the scale of river networks. Empirical measurements of solute dynamics in large rivers are needed to understand the role of whole river networks (as opposed to stream reaches) in patterns of nutrient export at regional and continental scales
Secondary gamma-ray production in a coded aperture mask
The application of the coded aperture mask to high energy gamma-ray astronomy will provide the capability of locating a cosmic gamma-ray point source with a precision of a few arc-minutes above 20 MeV. Recent tests using a mask in conjunction with drift chamber detectors have shown that the expected point spread function is achieved over an acceptance cone of 25 deg. A telescope employing this technique differs from a conventional telescope only in that the presence of the mask modifies the radiation field in the vicinity of the detection plane. In addition to reducing the primary photon flux incident on the detector by absorption in the mask elements, the mask will also be a secondary radiator of gamma-rays. The various background components in a CAMTRAC (Coded Aperture Mask Track Chamber) telescope are considered. Monte-Carlo calculations are compared with recent measurements obtained using a prototype instrument in a tagged photon beam line
Variety of idempotents in nonassociative algebras
In this paper, we study the variety of all nonassociative (NA) algebras from
the idempotent point of view. We are interested, in particular, in the spectral
properties of idempotents when algebra is generic, i.e. idempotents are in
general position. Our main result states that in this case, there exist at
least nontrivial obstructions (syzygies) on the Peirce spectrum of a
generic NA algebra of dimension . We also discuss the exceptionality of the
eigenvalue which appears in the spectrum of idempotents in
many classical examples of NA algebras and characterize its extremal properties

Operating characteristics of a prototype high energy gamma-ray telescope
The field of gamma-ray astronomy in the energy range from ten to several hundred MeV is severely limited by the angular resolution that can be achieved by present instruments. The identification of some of the point sources found by the COS-B mission and the resolution of detailed structure existing in those sources may depend on the development of a new class of instrument. The coded aperture mask telescope, used successfully at X-ray energies hold the promise of being such an instrument. A prototype coded aperture telescope was operated in a tagged photon beam ranging in energy from 23 to 123 MeV. The purpose of the experiment was to demonstrate the feasibility of operating a coded aperture mask telescope in this energy region. Some preliminary results and conclusions drawn from some of the data resulting from this experiment are presented
Multicomponent Activity Cycles using Hilbert-Huang Analysis
The temporal analysis of stellar activity evolution is usually dominated by a
complex trade-off between model complexity and interpretability, often by
neglecting the non-stationary nature of the process. Recent studies appear to
indicate that the presence of multiple coexisting cycles in a single star is
more common than previously thought. The correct identification of physically
meaningful cyclic components in spectroscopic time series is therefore a
crucial task, which cannot overlook local behaviors. Here we propose a
decomposition technique which adaptively recovers amplitude- and
frequency-varying components. We present our results for the solar activity as
measured both by the sunspot number and the -line emission index, and we
consistently recover the Schwabe and Gleissberg cycles as well as the
Gnevyshev-Ohl pattern probably related to the Hale cycle. We also recover the
known 8-year cycle for 61 Cygni A, in addition to evidence of a three-cycles
long pattern reminiscent of the Gnevyshev-Ohl rule. This is particularly
interesting as we cannot discard the possibility of a relationship between the
measured field polarity reversals and this Hale-like periodicity.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure
