Design considerations of a proposed UK VHF radar

    Get PDF
The major features of a proposed UK VHF radar for meso-, strato-, and tropospheric studies are discussed. The research interests of potential users which were considered in the design analysis are listed

Performance and Safety to NAVSEA Instruction 9310.1A of Lithium-thionyl Chloride Reserve Batteries

    Get PDF
The design, performance and safety of a fully engineered, selfcontained Li/SOCl2 battery as the power source for underwater applications. In addition to meeting the performance standards of the end user this battery is successfully tested under the rigorous safety conditions of NAVSEA Instruction 9310.1A for use on land, aircraft and surface ships

    Redundant data management system

    Get PDF
Redundant data management system solves problem of operating redundant equipment in real time environment where failures are detected, isolated, and switched in simple manner. System consists of quadruply-redundant computer, input/output control units, and data buses. System inherently contains failure detection, isolation, and switching function

Our very own coral reef crisis

The past decade has seen trawling operations expand along the edge of the North East Atlantic continental shelf, as stocks of shelf-dwelling species such as cod have declined. As a substitute, markets are being developed for very strange-looking deep-water species such as roundnose grenadier (Coryphaenoides rupestris), orange roughy (Hoplostethus atlanticus), black scabbard fish (Aphanopus carbo) and deep-sea sharks (Centrophorus squamosus and Centroscymnus coelolepis). The problem is that this expansion in deep-water fisheries goes on unregulated, and it is causing long-term disturbance to seabed habitats and fish stocks alik

Intimate Partner Violence: Updated Screening Tool and Approach to Screen Positive Patients

    Get PDF
Intimate partner violence screening is recommended in all women of child-bearing age. Ensuring validated screening tool utilization and employing strategies to identify risk while providing non-judgmental support is critical to identifying patients and optimizing appropriate resource referral.https://scholarworks.uvm.edu/fmclerk/1391/thumbnail.jp

The heavy top quark and supersymmetry

    Get PDF
Three aspects of supersymmetric theories are discussed: electroweak symmetry breaking, the issues of flavor, and gauge unification. The heavy top quark plays an important, sometimes dominant, role in each case. Additional symmetries lead to extensions of the standard model which can provide an understanding for many of the outstanding problems of particle physics. A broken supersymmetric extension of spacetime allows electroweak symmetry breaking to follow from the dynamics of the heavy top quark; an extension of isospin provides a constrained framework for understanding the pattern of quark and lepton masses; and a grand unified extension of the standard model gauge group provides an elegant understanding of the gauge quantum numbers of the components of a generation. Experimental signatures for each of these additional symmetries are discussed.Comment: 60 pages, 1 ps file; lectures delivered at the 1995 SLAC Summer Institut
