Using Personality and Temperament to Predict Exercise Behavior: A Pilot Study of the Braverman Nature Assessment
International Journal of Exercise Science 15(5): 341-357, 2022. The Braverman Nature Assessment (BNA) is intended to determine the dominant monoamine neurochemical that drives an individual’s temperament and behavior. The measure has been colloquially praised for the ability to determine the most effective exercise protocols for an individual based on their “dominant nature.” This study seeks to examine the proposed relationship between the Braverman Natures and exercise behavior. Seventy-three adults (57 females) between ages 18-65 (mean = 26 years) completed an online survey consisting of the BNA, Big Five Personality Inventory (BFI), and Aerobics Center Longitudinal Study Physical Activity Questionnaire (ACLSPAQ). All Natures showed significant correlations to unique sets of personality traits (BFI). Dopamine and Serotonin Nature scores (via BNA) showed positive correlations to total physical activity (PA)measures. Serotonin Nature had positive correlation with participation in resistance exercise (r = .36, p \u3c .01) and showed the strongest correlations to PA participation. Dopamine was not associated with Extraversion as predicted; however, showed positive correlations to vigorous intensity exercise (r = .26, p \u3c .05). The Natures demonstrate some low to moderate correlations between neurochemical scores and exercise behaviors such as preference for various exercise modalities. There is preliminary evidence to suggest that the BNA may be a useful tool for exercise prescription based on correlations between personality and exercise behavior found in this study. Time-Series Ensemble Photometry and the Search for Variable Stars in the Open Cluster M11
This work presents the first large-scale photometric variability survey of
the intermediate age (~200 Myr) open cluster M11. Thirteen nights of data over
two observing seasons were analyzed (using crowded field and ensemble
photometry techniques) to obtain high relative precision photometry. In this
study we focus on the detection of candidate member variable stars for
follow-up studies. A total of 39 variable stars were detected and can be
categorized as follows: 1 irregular (probably pulsating) variable, 6 delta
Scuti variables, 14 detached eclipsing binary systems, 17 W UMa variables, and
1 unidentified/candidate variable. While previous proper motion studies allow
for cluster membership determination for the brightest stars, we find that
membership determination is significantly hampered below V=15,R=15.5 by the
large population of field stars overlapping the cluster MS. Of the brightest
detected variables that have a high likelihood of cluster membership, we find
five systems where further work could help constrain theoretical stellar

Do Exergames Allow Children To Achieve Physical Activity Intensity Commensurate With National Guidelines?
The purpose of this study was to determine if two popular exergames, Wii Fit™ and EA Sports Active™, both games for the Nintendo Wii™ console, help children achieve intensity consistent with recommended physical activity guidelines. Thirty children (19 males and 11 females, Mean age = 9.4 ± 1.8 years) participated in this study by playing each game during one research session. During the session participants wore a heart rate monitor and accelerometer to measure exercise intensity. Perceived exertion (RPE) was measured with the children’s run/walk OMNI scale. All three measures of exercise intensity (heart rate, accelerometer counts, and RPE) found that the EA Sports Active™ game session elicited higher exercise intensity. However, heart rate data found both games to achieve moderate intensity (65-68% age-predicted HRmax). When using heart rate as an indicator of exercise intensity it appears that both exergames were of sufficient intensity to achieve physical activity guidelines. Future studies should continue to investigate the utility of exergaming in helping children to become more physically active
Salient practices of award-winning undergraduate research mentors: Balancing freedom and control to achieve excellence
This paper contributes to research on teaching excellence by extending the current body of literature pertaining to mentoring pedagogies in undergraduate research settings across diverse social, institutional and disciplinary contexts. Our data comes from in-depth interviews with 32 international faculty who have received excellence awards for undergraduate research mentoring. The data reveal a freedom - control dialectic, illuminating the ways in which expert mentors negotiate the desire to create opportunities for students to experience freedom and creativity in research, yet maintain control over the topic, quality and outcomes. The research findings reveal a defining characteristic of award-winning mentors as an ability to establish and sustain a sense of challenge, while maintaining meaningful engagement and a sense of achievement amongst students. The findings show the importance of tailoring practice to the needs of particular student groups, and there are implications for institutional resourcing, as well as mentor training and development

This article discusses two evidenced-based frameworks (i.e., Act-Belong-Commit and Ten Salient Practices) that undergraduate research mentors can keep in mind to center the mental health of their students in their practice
Are superflares on solar analogues caused by extra-solar planets?
Stellar flares with times more energy than the largest solar
flare have been detected from 9 normal F and G main sequence stars (Schaefer,
King & Deliyannis 1999). These superflares have durations of hours to days and
are visible from at least x-ray to optical frequencies. The absence of
world-spanning aurorae in historical records and of anomalous extinctions in
the geological record indicate that our Sun likely does not suffer superflares.
In seeking to explain this new phenomenon, we are struck by its similarity to
large stellar flares on RS Canum Venaticorum binary systems, which are caused
by magnetic reconnection events associated with the tangling of magnetic fields
between the two stars. The superflare stars are certainly not of this class,
although we propose a similar flare mechanism. That is, superflares are caused
by magnetic reconnection between fields of the primary star and a close-in
Jovian planet. Thus, by only invoking known planetary properties and
reconnection scenarios, we can explain the energies, durations, and spectra of

A Review of Target Mass Corrections
With recent advances in the precision of inclusive lepton--nuclear scattering
experiments, it has become apparent that comparable improvements are needed in
the accuracy of the theoretical analysis tools. In particular, when extracting
parton distribution functions in the large-x region, it is crucial to correct
the data for effects associated with the nonzero mass of the target. We present
here a comprehensive review of these target mass corrections (TMC) to structure
functions data, summarizing the relevant formulas for TMCs in electromagnetic
and weak processes. We include a full analysis of both hadronic and partonic
masses, and trace how these effects appear in the operator product expansion
and the factorized parton model formalism, as well as their limitations when
applied to data in the x->1 limit. We evaluate the numerical effects of TMCs on
various structure functions, and compare fits to data with and without these

A Self-Contained Subsea Platform for Acoustic Monitoring of the Environment Around Marine Renewable Energy Devices-Field Deployments at Wave and Tidal Energy Sites in Orkney, Scotland
The drive towards sustainable energy has seen rapid development of marine renewable energy devices (MREDs). The NERC/Defra collaboration FLOw, Water column and Benthic ECology 4-D (FLOWBEC-4D) is investigating the environmental and ecological effects of installing and operating wave and tidal energy devices. The FLOWBEC sonar platform combines several instruments to record information at a range of physical and multitrophic levels for durations of two weeks to capture an entire spring-neap tidal cycle. An upward-facing multifrequency Simrad EK60 echosounder is synchronized with an upward-facing Imagenex Delta T multibeam sonar. An acoustic Doppler velocimeter (ADV) provides local current measurements and a fluorometer measures chlorophyll (as a proxy for phytoplankton) and turbidity. The platform is self-contained, facilitating rapid deployment and recovery in high-energy sites and flexibility in gathering baseline data. Five 2-week deployments were completed in 2012 and 2013 at wave and tidal energy sites, both in the presence and absence of renewable energy structures at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC), Orkney, U.K. Algorithms for target tracking have been designed and compared with concurrent, shore-based seabird observations used to ground truth the acoustic data. The depth preference and interactions of birds, fish schools and marine mammals with MREDs can be tracked to assess whether individual animals face collision risks with tidal stream turbines, and how animals generally interact with MREDs. These results can be used to guide marine spatial planning, device design, licensing and operation, as different device types are tested, as individual devices are scaled up to arrays, and as new sites are considered
