Removal of lead and zinc ions from their monocomponent and two-component aqueous solutions using sodium hydroxide

    Get PDF
The hydroxide precipitation method, using NaOH as a precipitant agent, was conducted to treat synthetic monocomponent and two-component water solutions of Pb2+ and Zn2+ with initial concentrations of 50 and 500 mg/l of each metal. The effect of pH and initial concentration of lead and zinc ions on their removal were investigated. The precipitation experiments were carried out by batch method that involves the mixing of NaOH with solutions containing metal ions to occur nucleation, solid growth and subsequent separation of precipitates from solution by filtration. The results showed that the removal efficiency was increased by increasing of pH and initial concentration of metal ions in their water solutions. Hydroxide precipitation method using NaOH is an ef-ficient technique for the removal of lead and zinc ions from their monocomponent and two-component water so-lutions of different concentrations, with maximum removal efficiency in the pH range of 10.32 to 11.39

THE INFLUENCE OF PHYSICOCHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SOIL ON THE DISTRIBUTION OF HEAVY METALS IN PLANT CULTURES

    Get PDF
Heavy metals are natural ingredients of many plant cultures, and they are increasingly found in the soil as the main group of inorganic contaminants. The consumption of food products, either fresh or processed, with an increased concentration of heavy metals leads to the deposition of these metals in the body, which further leads to a series of consequences in the form of cardiovascular, respiratory, and neurological problems. The behavior of heavy metals in soil and their accumulation by plants depends on many factors, such as soil structure, soil pH value, organic matter content, adsorption complex and other factors. Therefore, the aim of this work is to present the influence of physical and chemical soil parameters on the distribution of heavy metals (Pb(II) and Cd(II)) in plant cultures and to assess the health risk pollution of the mentioned metals in plant cultures (cucumber, pepper, tomato, eggplant)

Comparative analysis of the antioxidant capacity of some natural and synthetic antioxidants added to palm oil

    Get PDF
Various synthetic and natural antioxidants are used to reduce oxidation and its negative impact on the oil during the food frying process. Considering that some studies show the negative impact of synthetic antioxidants on the health of consumers, natural alternatives are being used more and more. BHA and BHT are synthetic antioxidants that are widely used in the food industry and a large number of natural compounds such as phenols, anthocyanins, flavonoids, vitamins, etc. show antioxidant properties. In this study, the antioxidant capacity of oregano and rosemary essential oil was tested and compared with the antioxidant capacity of BHA and BHT. The antioxidant capacity was evaluated by the removal of DPPH radicals and by iron reduction (FRAP). The results of this study showed that the studied essential oils exhibited antioxidant capacity. These oils have a high antioxidant capacity, however, compared to synthetic antioxidants, they show a significantly lower antioxidant capacity but they can be used as natural antioxidants during food processing

Physicochemical characteristics of products based on honey and hawthorn (Crataegus spp)

    Get PDF
Medicinal plants have become an increasing subject of interest worldwide due to the large amount of biologically active substances that have potential beneficial health properties. One of the more interesting popular medicinal plants is hawthorn (Crataegus spp.), a deciduous branched shrub that is increasingly used for health purposes. Various parts of this plant, including berries, flowers, and leaves, are rich in nutrients and beneficial bioactive compounds that are effective in treating many conditions. Honey is a natural sweetener produced by bees from plant secretions. Known for its nutritional and medicinal values, it gives strength to the body, which is why it is indispensable in the human diet. Taking into account all of the above, the goal of the work is to test samples of the mixture of honey and hawthorn in different proportions and determine the physical and chemical characteristics: pH value, electrical conductivity, refractive index, viscosity, water activity, HMF, DPPH. Based on the analysis, appropriate conclusions will be drawn and the possibility of registering this mixture as a food supplement will be determined. On the basis of the conducted analyses, it can be concluded that the parameter values ā€‹ā€‹are within the permitted limits defined by the Rulebook (Official Gazette Bosnia and Herzegovina  No. 37/09). The analysis of the mentioned parameters showed that the chemical composition of the sample plays a major role in the value of the measurement results, and that sample III has the best antioxidant properties
