    Mechanical properties and compositional characteristics of beet (Beta vulgaris L.) varieties and their response to nitrogen application

    Mechanical properties of sugar beet are important during harvesting and processing. To potentially correlate mechanical properties with structural features of cell wall polymers, four different Beta varieties (Beta vulgaris L.) were characterized for their mechanical properties and cell wall composition. In addition, the influence of nitrogen fertilization was analyzed. Additional nitrogen fertilization only slightly influenced mechanical properties and cell wall composition. Hardly any structural differences of cell wall polysaccharides were observed for all Beta varieties. Slight differences in alcohol insoluble residue and protein contents, in amino acid profiles of proteins, and in esterification degree of pectins were found. The Beta varieties differed in their contents of cell wall bound phenolic components, and particularly in their dry matter contents. Analyses of mechanical properties of the Beta varieties demonstrated differences in tissue firmness and compressive strength. However, no evidence was found that the observed differences of cell wall composition are responsible for the divergent mechanical properties, with the exception of water contents that were higher in samples with less compressive strength

    Which doctors and with what problems contact a specialist service for doctors? A cross sectional investigation

    Background: In the United Kingdom, specialist treatment and intervention services for doctors are underdeveloped. The MedNet programme, created in 1997 and funded by the London Deanery, aims to fill this gap by providing a self-referral, face-to-face, psychotherapeutic assessment service for doctors in London and South-East England. MedNet was designed to be a low-threshold service, targeting doctors without formal psychiatric problems. The aim of this study was to delineate the characteristics of doctors utilising the service, to describe their psychological morbidity, and to determine if early intervention is achieved. Methods: A cross-sectional study including all consecutive self-referred doctors (n = 121, 50% male) presenting in 2002–2004 was conducted. Measures included standardised and bespoke questionnaires both self-report and clinician completed. The multi-dimensional evaluation included: demographics, CORE (CORE-OM, CORE-Workplace and CORE-A) an instrument designed to evaluate the psychological difficulties of patients referred to outpatient services, Brief Symptom Inventory to quantify caseness and formal psychiatric illness, and Maslach Burnout Inventory. Results: The most prevalent presenting problems included depression, anxiety, interpersonal, self-esteem and work-related issues. However, only 9% of the cohort were identified as severely distressed psychiatrically using this measure. In approximately 50% of the sample, problems first presented in the preceding year. About 25% were on sick leave at the time of consultation, while 50% took little or no leave in the prior 12 months. A total of 42% were considered to be at some risk of suicide, with more than 25% considered to have a moderate to severe risk. There were no significant gender differences in type of morbidity, severity or days off sick. Conclusion: Doctors displayed high levels of distress as reflected in the significant proportion of those who were at some risk of suicide; however, low rates of severe psychiatric illness were detected. These findings suggest that MedNet clients represent both ends of the spectrum of severity, enabling early clinical engagement for a significant proportion of cases that is of importance both in terms of personal health and protecting patient care, and providing a timely intervention for those who are at risk, a group for whom rapid intervention services are in need and an area that requires further investigation in the UK

    ALCHIMIA D2.1 Requirements and human-centric recommendation

    This report constitutes Deliverable 2.1: Requirements and human-centric recommendations of the ALCHIMIA project. ALCHIMIA is a tool that will help companies in the steel and metal sector to continuously optimise production process by exploiting a broad range of production-related data. The ALCHIMIA project adopts a human-centred approach to design that guides the design and development process in specific ways to ensure the views, interests and needs of users and stakeholders are taken during the design phase of the technology. The report provides an overview and summary of activities conducted and findings obtained during the initial stages of the development of the AI-based ALCHIMIA system. It starts by providing an overview of current production processes in two participating companies, one an EAF-based steel producer and the other a manufacturer of disk brakes for the automotive industry (Part 2: Setting the Scene). The description of current approaches leads to a description of efficiency problems in both industrial settings that ALCHIMIA is aiming to solve (Part 3: ALCHIMIA and its Functions). To effectively take user and stakeholder views, interests and needs into account, they need to be systematically elicited and ultimately translated into system requirements that constrain and guide the actual technical design of the ALCHIMIA system. Part 4 of the report (User and Stakeholder Requirements and Expectations) provides an overview of the requirement elicitation activities conducted as part of the ALCHIMIA project. Findings and outcomes of these activities are also presented. In Part 5 (Human-Centred Design Recommendations), we reflexively analyse and evaluate the alignment of the design and development activities in the ALCHIMIA project with six human-centred design principles. While this evaluation indicates that the ALCHIMIA project is well aligned with the human-centred design principles, there are aspects that can be improved. We thus make three recommendations that, if implemented, should ensure improved alignment of the ALCHIMIA project with human-centred design prescriptions

The papers are offered as a tribute to Stephen R. Anderson, the Dorothy R. Diebold Professor of Linguistics at Yale, who is retiring at the end of the 2016-2017 academic year. The contributors are friends, colleagues, and former students of Professor Anderson, all important contributors to linguistics in their own right. As is typical for such volumes, the contributions span a variety of topics relating to the interests of the honorand. In this case, the central contributions that Anderson has made to so many areas of linguistics and cognitive science, drawing on synchronic and diachronic phenomena in diverse linguistic systems, are represented through the papers in the volume.
