    Tannaka-Krein duality for Hopf algebroids

    Full text link
    We develop the Tannaka-Krein duality for monoidal functors with target in the categories of bimodules over a ring. The \coend of such a functor turns out to be a Hopf algebroid over this ring. Using the result of a previous paper we characterize a small abelian, locally finite rigid monoidal category as the category of rigid comodules over a transitive Hopf algebroid.Comment: 25 pages, final version, to appear in Israel Journal of Mathematic

    Exchange effects on electron scattering through a quantum dot embedded in a two-dimensional semiconductor structure

    Full text link
    We have developed a theoretical method to study scattering processes of an incident electron through an N-electron quantum dot (QD) embedded in a two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor. The generalized Lippmann-Schwinger equations including the electron-electron exchange interaction in this system are solved for the continuum electron by using the method of continued fractions (MCF) combined with 2D partial-wave expansion technique. The method is applied to a one-electron QD case. Cross-sections are obtained for both the singlet and triplet couplings between the incident electron and the QD electron during the scattering. The total elastic cross-sections as well as the spin-flip scattering cross-sections resulting from the exchange potential are presented. Furthermore, inelastic scattering processes are also studied using a multichannel formalism of the MCF.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure

    A balancing act: Evidence for a strong subdominant d-wave pairing channel in Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2{\rm Ba_{0.6}K_{0.4}Fe_2As_2}

    Full text link
    We present an analysis of the Raman spectra of optimally doped Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2{\rm Ba_{0.6}K_{0.4}Fe_2As_2} based on LDA band structure calculations and the subsequent estimation of effective Raman vertices. Experimentally a narrow, emergent mode appears in the B1gB_{1g} (dx2−y2d_{x^2-y^2}) Raman spectra only below TcT_c, well into the superconducting state and at an energy below twice the energy gap on the electron Fermi surface sheets. The Raman spectra can be reproduced quantitatively with estimates for the magnitude and momentum space structure of the s+−_{+-} pairing gap on different Fermi surface sheets, as well as the identification of the emergent sharp feature as a Bardasis-Schrieffer exciton, formed as a Cooper pair bound state in a subdominant dx2−y2d_{x^2-y^2} channel. The binding energy of the exciton relative to the gap edge shows that the coupling strength in this subdominant dx2−y2d_{x^2-y^2} channel is as strong as 60% of that in the dominant s+−s_{+-} channel. This result suggests that dx2−y2d_{x^2-y^2} may be the dominant pairing symmetry in Fe-based sperconductors which lack central hole bands.Comment: 10 pages, 6 Figure

    Innovative in silico approaches to address avian flu using grid technology

    The recent years have seen the emergence of diseases which have spread very quickly all around the world either through human travels like SARS or animal migration like avian flu. Among the biggest challenges raised by infectious emerging diseases, one is related to the constant mutation of the viruses which turns them into continuously moving targets for drug and vaccine discovery. Another challenge is related to the early detection and surveillance of the diseases as new cases can appear just anywhere due to the globalization of exchanges and the circulation of people and animals around the earth, as recently demonstrated by the avian flu epidemics. For 3 years now, a collaboration of teams in Europe and Asia has been exploring some innovative in silico approaches to better tackle avian flu taking advantage of the very large computing resources available on international grid infrastructures. Grids were used to study the impact of mutations on the effectiveness of existing drugs against H5N1 and to find potentially new leads active on mutated strains. Grids allow also the integration of distributed data in a completely secured way. The paper presents how we are currently exploring how to integrate the existing data sources towards a global surveillance network for molecular epidemiology.Comment: 7 pages, submitted to Infectious Disorders - Drug Target

    Localization of Bulk Matters on a Thick Anti-de Sitter Brane

    Full text link
    In this paper, we investigate the localization and the mass spectra of gravity and various bulk matter fields on a thick anti-de Sitter (AdS) brane, by presenting the mass-independent potentials of the Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes in the corresponding Schr\"{o}dinger equations. For gravity, the potential of the KK modes tends to infinity at the boundaries of the extra dimension, which leads to an infinite number of the bound KK modes. Although the gravity zero mode cannot be localized on the AdS brane, the massive modes are trapped on the brane. The scalar perturbations of the thick AdS brane have been analyzed, and the brane is stable under the scalar perturbations. For spin-0 scalar fields and spin-1 vector fields, the potentials of the KK modes also tend to infinity at the boundaries of the extra dimension, and the characteristic of the localization is the same as the case of gravity. For spin-1/2 fermions, by introducing the usual Yukawa coupling ηΨˉϕΨ\eta\bar{\Psi}\phi\Psi with the positive coupling constant η\eta, the four-dimensional massless left-chiral fermion and massive Dirac fermions are obtained on the AdS thick brane.Comment: 23 pages, 9 figure
