    Hidden quantum mirage by negative refraction in semiconductor P-N junctions

    We predict a novel quantum interference based on the negative refraction across a semiconductor P-N junction: with a local pump on one side of the junction, the response of a local probe on the other side behaves as if the disturbance emanates not from the pump but instead from its mirror image about the junction. This phenomenon is guaranteed by translational invariance of the system and matching of Fermi surfaces of the constituent materials, thus it is robust against other details of the junction (e.g., junction width, potential profile, and even disorder). The recently fabricated P-N junctions in 2D semiconductors provide ideal platforms to explore this phenomenon and its applications to dramatically enhance charge and spin transport as well as carrier-mediated long-range correlation

    Effects of gastrointestinal motility on obesity

    Background: Changes of gastrointestinal motility, which are important related to the food digestion and absorption in the gastrointestinal tract, may be one of the factors in obesity-formation. Aims The changes of gastrointestinal motility were explored in the rats from diet-induced obesity (DIO), diet-induced obese resistant (DR) or control (CON) by diet intervention. Methods: After fed with a high fat diet (HFD), 100 male Sprague–Dawley rats were divided into DIO, DR and CON groups. The rats from DIO and DR groups were fed with HFD, and CON with a basic diet (BD) for 6 weeks. Body weight, energy intake, gastric emptying, intestinal transit, motility of isolated small intestine segments and colon’s function were measured in this study. Expression of interstitial cells of Cajal (ICCs) and enteric nervous system (ENS) - choline acetyltransferase (ChAT), vasoactive intestinal peptides (VIP), substance P (SP) and NADPH-d histochemistry of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) were determined by immunohistochemistry. Results: Body weight and intake energy in the DIO group were higher than those in the DR group (p < 0.05). Gastric emptying of DIO group rats (78.33 ± 4.95%) was significantly faster than that of DR group (51.79 ± 10.72%) (p < 0.01). The peak value of motility in rat’s duodenum from the DR group was significantly higher than that in the DIO group (p < 0.05). In addition, the expression of interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC), choline acetyltransferase (ChAT), substance P (SP), vasoactive intestinal peptides (VIP) and neuronal nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate-diaphorase (NADPH-d) in the intestine of rats were significantly increased in the DIO group when compared to the DR group (p < 0.05). Conclusion: A faster gastric emptying, a weaker contraction of duodenum movement, and a stronger contraction and relaxation of ileum movement were found in the rats from the DIO group. It indicated that there has effect of gastrointestinal motility on obesity induced by HFD

    Comparison of Chemical Compositions of the Pepper EOs From Different Cultivars and Their AChE Inhibitory Activity

    © The Author(s) 2020. Pepper is one of the most popular spices over the world and is called the King of Spices. Its essential oils (EOs) could alleviate neuronal ailments due to the inhibitory effect against acetylcholinesterase (AChE). In this study, the chemical compositions of 26 EOs prepared from white and black pepper collecting from 6 different cultivars were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). A total of 133 compounds were identified in the white and black pepper EOs. Monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes were found to be riched in these EOs, of which α-pinene, β-pinene, sabinene, 3-carene, limonene, and (E)-β-caryophyllene were the major constituents. Most of pepper EOs showed potential AChE inhibitory activity with half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) values in the range of 0.5-182.5 µg/mL. Comparison of chemical constitutes of pepper EOs from different cultivars suggested that α-pinene, β-pinene, and 3-carene with an IC50 value of 3.2, 53.3, and 2.9 µg/mL, respectively, might be used as Quality-marker (Q-marker) of pepper oil in inhibiting AChE

    The epithelial barrier serves as a critical defense mechanism separating the human body from the external environment, fulfilling both physical and immune functions. This barrier plays a pivotal role in shielding the body from environmental risk factors such as allergens, pathogens, and pollutants. However, since the 19th century, the escalating threats posed by environmental pollution, global warming, heightened usage of industrial chemical products, and alterations in biodiversity have contributed to a noteworthy surge in allergic disease incidences. Notably, allergic diseases frequently exhibit dysfunction in the epithelial barrier. The proposed epithelial barrier hypothesis introduces a novel avenue for the prevention and treatment of allergic diseases. Despite increased attention to the role of barrier dysfunction in allergic disease development, numerous questions persist regarding the mechanisms underlying the disruption of normal barrier function. Consequently, this review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the epithelial barrier’s role in allergic diseases, encompassing influencing factors, assessment techniques, and repair methodologies. By doing so, it seeks to present innovative strategies for the prevention and treatment of allergic diseases

    Preoperative radiomic signature based on CT images for noninvasive evaluation of localized nephroblastoma in pediatric patients

    BackgroundNephron sparing nephrectomy may not reduce the prognosis of nephroblastoma in the absence of involvement of the renal capsule, sinus vessels, and lymph nodes, However, there is no accurate preoperative noninvasive evaluation method at present.Materials and methods105 nephroblastoma patients underwent contrast-enhanced CT scan between 2013 and 2020 in our hospital were retrospectively collected, including 59 cases with localized stage and 46 cases with non-localized stage, and then were divided into training cohort (n= 73) and validation cohort (n= 32) according to the order of CT scanning time. After lesion segmentation and data preprocessing, radiomic features were extracted from each volume of interest. The multi-step procedure including Pearson correlation analysis and sequential forward floating selection was performed to produce radiomic signature. Prediction model was constructed using the radiomic signature and Logistic Regression classifier for predicting the localized nephroblastoma in the training cohort. Finally, the model performance was validated in the validation cohort.ResultsA total of 1652 radiomic features have been extracted, from which TOP 10 features were selected as the radiomic signature. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve, accuracy, sensitivity and specificity of the prediction model were 0.796, 0.795, 0.732 and 0.875 for the training cohort respectively, and 0.710, 0.719, 0.611 and 0.857 for the validation cohort respectively. The result comparison with prediction models composed of different machine learning classifiers and different parameters also manifest the effectiveness of our radiomic model.ConclusionA logistic regression model based on radiomic features extracted from preoperative CT images had good ability to noninvasively predict nephroblastoma without renal capsule, sinus vessel, and lymph node involvement
