Preparation of Some New Substituted 5-(2\u27 -Furfuryl)-barbituric and -thiobarbituric Acids
Starting with diethyl (2-furfuryl) -malonate, obtained by
reduction of diethyl (2-furfurylidene) -malonate with aluminum
amalgam in wet ether, several new or hitherto insufficiently
characterized 1- or/and 5-substituted 5-(2-furfuryl) -barbituric and
-thiobarbituric acids, have been prepared
Bone mineral content after renal transplantation
Forearm bone mineral content (BMC), as evaluated by photonabsorption densitometry, was measured in 28 cadaver kidney donor recipients who entered the study 8 weeks postoperatively and were followed up for 18 months. BMC decreased signifiantly (p<0.05) but marginally in placebo-treated patients (n=14) (initial BMC 1.09±0.25 g/cm; final BMC 1.05±0.24). Fourteen patients were prophylactically given 1,25(OH)2vitamin D3 in a dose which avoided hypercalcemia and hypercalciuria (sim0.25 µg/day); under 1,25(OH)2 vitamin D3 prophylaxis a significant decrease of forearm BMC was observed no longer (initial BMC 0.94±0.21 g/cm; final BMC 0.95±0.21), but the difference between placebo and 1,25(OH)2 vitamin D3 narrowly missed statistical significance (p=0.066).
It is concluded that the decrease of forearm BMC is negligible in transplant recipients with low steroid regimens. The data suggest a trend for prophylaxis with 1,25(OH)2 vitamin D3 to slightly ameliorate forearm (cortical) BMC loss
Parameter-Independent Strategies for pMDPs via POMDPs
Markov Decision Processes (MDPs) are a popular class of models suitable for
solving control decision problems in probabilistic reactive systems. We
consider parametric MDPs (pMDPs) that include parameters in some of the
transition probabilities to account for stochastic uncertainties of the
environment such as noise or input disturbances.
We study pMDPs with reachability objectives where the parameter values are
unknown and impossible to measure directly during execution, but there is a
probability distribution known over the parameter values. We study for the
first time computing parameter-independent strategies that are expectation
optimal, i.e., optimize the expected reachability probability under the
probability distribution over the parameters. We present an encoding of our
problem to partially observable MDPs (POMDPs), i.e., a reduction of our problem
to computing optimal strategies in POMDPs.
We evaluate our method experimentally on several benchmarks: a motivating
(repeated) learner model; a series of benchmarks of varying configurations of a

Designing Markets for Biodiversity Offsets: Lessons from Tradable Pollution Permits
Globally, governments and regulators face an ongoing trade‐off between meeting economic development needs and conserving biodiversity. Markets for biodiversity offsets are one tool which could secure biodiversity protection at lower costs to society whilst allowing some economic development to still take place. We provide a new perspective on biodiversity offset markets by focussing on what can be learnt from one of the best‐researched environmental markets: the market for tradable pollution permits. We argue there are four key design parameters in terms of how and what to trade. These design parameters likely determine the ecological effectiveness and economic efficiency of any market in biodiversity offsets. Applying lessons from tradable pollution permit markets will be important if the benefits of biodiversity offset markets are to be realized more fully in future. A well‐functioning market for biodiversity offsets dually minimizes the economic costs of preventing future losses in biodiversity due to development and provides an economic incentive for landowners to invest in biodiversity conservation. The most crucial aspect of the market is what to trade (the currency in the offset market), and this has significant implications on the other key aspects of market design; the trading ratio which governs the rate of exchange between offsets at different points in space and time; the scale of the market; and how the market is regulated. We argue that markets function best where the conservation priority is a well‐defined unit of biodiversity which can be readily measured and monitored. In situations where there are already strong regulations safeguarding biodiversity, the benefit of biodiversity offset markets is in reducing the aggregate costs of conservation. We believe biodiversity offset markets will offer the highest potential in developing countries with weaker environmental protection and a greater need to reconcile economic development needs with conservation under limited funding
First-principles study of the optoelectronic properties and photovoltaic absorber layer efficiency of Cu-based chalcogenides
Cu-based chalcogenides are promising materials for thin-film solar cells with
more than 20% measured cell efficiency. Using first-principles calculations
based on density functional theory, the optoelectronic properties of a group of
Cu-based chalcogenides Cu-II-IV-VI is studied. They are then screened
with the aim of identifying potential absorber materials for photovoltaic
applications. The spectroscopic limited maximum efficiency (SLME) introduced by
Yu and Zunger is used as a metric for the screening. After constructing the
current-voltage curve, the maximum spectroscopy dependent power conversion
efficiency is calculated from the maximum power output. The role of the nature
of the band gap, direct or indirect, and also of the absorptivity of the
studied materials on the maximum theoretical power conversion efficiency is
studied. Our results show that Cu-II-GeSe with II=Cd and Hg, and
Cu-II-SnS with II=Cd and Zn have a higher theoretical efficiency
compared to the materials currently used as absorber layer
\Lambda-buildings and base change functors
We prove an analog of the base change functor of \Lambda-trees in the setting
of generalized affine buildings. The proof is mainly based on local and global
combinatorics of the associated spherical buildings. As an application we
obtain that the class of generalized affine building is closed under ultracones
and asymptotic cones. Other applications involve a complex of groups
decompositions and fixed point theorems for certain classes of generalized

A probabilistic analysis of argument cogency
This paper offers a probabilistic treatment of the conditions for argument cogency as endorsed in informal logic: acceptability, relevance, and sufficiency. Treating a natural language argument as a reason-claim-complex, our analysis identifies content features of defeasible argument on which the RSA conditions depend, namely: change in the commitment to the reason, the reason’s sensitivity and selectivity to the claim, one’s prior commitment to the claim, and the contextually determined thresholds of acceptability for reasons and for claims. Results contrast with, and may indeed serve to correct, the informal understanding and applications of the RSA criteria concerning their conceptual dependence, their function as update-thresholds, and their status as obligatory rather than permissive norms, but also show how these formal and informal normative approachs can in fact align
Ferromagnetism in Fe-substituted spinel semiconductor ZnGaO
Motivated by the recent experimental observation of long range ferromagnetic
order at a relatively high temperature of 200K in the Fe-doped ZnGaO
semiconducting spinel, we propose a possible mechanism for the observed
ferromagnetism in this system. We show, supported by band structure
calculations, how a model similar to the double exchange model can be written
down for this system and calculate the ground state phase diagram for the two
cases where Fe is doped either at the tetrahedral position or at the octahedral
position. We find that in both cases such a model can account for a stable
ferromagnetic phase in a wide range of parameter space. We also argue that in
the limit of high Fe concentration at the tetrahedral positions a
description in terms of a two band model is essential. The two orbitals
and the hopping between them play a crucial role in stabilizing the
ferromagnetic phase in this limit. The case when Fe is doped simultaneously at

The effect of interferon beta-1b treatment on MRI measures of cerebral atrophy in secondary progressive multiple sclerosis.
The recently completed European trial of interferon beta-1b (IFN beta -1b) in patients with secondary progressive multiple sclerosis (SP multiple sclerosis) has given an opportunity to assess the impact of treatment on cerebral atrophy using serial MRI. Unenhanced T-1-weighted brain imaging was acquired in a subgroup of 95 patients from five of the European centres; imaging was performed at 6-month intervals from month 0 to month 36. A blinded observer measured cerebral volume on four contiguous 5 mm cerebral hemisphere slices at each time point, using an algorithm with a high level of reproducibility and automation. There was a significant and progressive reduction in cerebral volume in both placebo and treated groups, with a mean reduction of 3.9 and 2.9%, respectively, by month 36 (P = 0.34 between groups). Exploratory subgroup analyses indicated that patients without gadolinium (Gd) enhancement at the baseline had a greater reduction of cerebral volume in the placebo group (mean reduction at month 36: placebo 5.1%, IFN beta -1b 1.8%, P < 0.05) whereas those with Gd-enhancing lesions showed a trend to greater reduction of cerebral volume if the patient was on IFN<beta>-1b (placebo 2.6%, IFN beta -1b, 3.7%; P > 0.05). These results are consistent with ongoing tissue loss in both arms of this study of secondary progressive multiple sclerosis. This finding is concordant with previous observations that disease progression, although delayed, is not halted by IFN beta. The different pattern seen in patients with and without baseline gadolinium enhancement suggests that part of the cerebral volume reduction observed in IFN beta -treated patients may be due to the anti-inflammatory/antioedematous effect of the drug. Longer periods of observation and larger groups of patients may be needed to detect the effects of treatment on cerebral atrophy in this population of patients with advanced disease
