    Determination of Strong-Interaction Widths and Shifts of Pionic X-Rays with a Crystal Spectrometer

    Pionic 3d-2p atomic transitions in F, Na, and Mg have been studied using a bent crystal spectrometer. The pionic atoms were formed in the production target placed in the external proton beam of the Space Radiation Effects Laboratory synchrocyclotron. The observed energies and widths of the transitions are E=41679(3) eV and Γ=21(8) eV, E=62434(18) eV and Γ=22(80) eV, E=74389(9) eV and Γ=67(35) eV, in F, Na, and Mg, respectively. The results are compared with calculations based on a pion-nucleus optical potential

    Implications of Improved Higgs Mass Calculations for Supersymmetric Models

    We discuss the allowed parameter spaces of supersymmetric scenarios in light of improved Higgs mass predictions provided by FeynHiggs 2.10.0. The Higgs mass predictions combine Feynman-diagrammatic results with a resummation of leading and subleading logarithmic corrections from the stop/top sector, which yield a significant improvement in the region of large stop masses. Scans in the pMSSM parameter space show that, for given values of the soft supersymmetry-breaking parameters, the new logarithmic contributions beyond the two-loop order implemented in FeynHiggs tend to give larger values of the light CP-even Higgs mass, M_h, in the region of large stop masses than previous predictions that were based on a fixed-order Feynman-diagrammatic result, though the differences are generally consistent with the previous estimates of theoretical uncertainties. We re-analyze the parameter spaces of the CMSSM, NUHM1 and NUHM2, taking into account also the constraints from CMS and LHCb measurements of B_s to \mu+\mu- and ATLAS searches for MET events using 20/fb of LHC data at 8 TeV. Within the CMSSM, the Higgs mass constraint disfavours tan beta lesssim 10, though not in the NUHM1 or NUHM2.Comment: 22 pages, 17 figure

    Structure of a Complete ATP Synthase Dimer Reveals the Molecular Basis of Inner Mitochondrial Membrane Morphology

    We determined the structure of a complete, dimeric F1Fo-ATP synthase from yeast Yarrowia lipolytica mitochondria by a combination of cryo-EM and X-ray crystallography. The final structure resolves 58 of the 60 dimer subunits. Horizontal helices of subunit a in Fo wrap around the c-ring rotor, and a total of six vertical helices assigned to subunits a, b, f, i, and 8 span the membrane. Subunit 8 (A6L in human) is an evolutionary derivative of the bacterial b subunit. On the lumenal membrane surface, subunit f establishes direct contact between the two monomers. Comparison with a cryo-EM map of the F1Fo monomer identifies subunits e and g at the lateral dimer interface. They do not form dimer contacts but enable dimer formation by inducing a strong membrane curvature of ∼100°. Our structure explains the structural basis of cristae formation in mitochondria, a landmark signature of eukaryotic cell morphology

    Full O(alpha) corrections to e+e- -> sf_i sf_j

    We present a complete precision analysis of the sfermion pair production process e+e- -> sf_i sf_j (f = t, b, tau, nu_tau) in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. Our results extend the previously calculated weak corrections by including all one-loop corrections together with higher order QED corrections. We present the details of the analytical calculation and discuss the renormalization scheme. The numerical analysis shows the results for total cross-sections, forward-backward and left-right asymmetries. It is based on the SPS1a' point from the SPA project. The complete corrections are about 10% and have to be taken into account in a high precision analysis.Comment: 32 pages, 24 figures, RevTeX

    Neural Stellar Population Synthesis Emulator for the DESI PROVABGS

    The Probabilistic Value-Added Bright Galaxy Survey (PROVABGS) catalog will provide the posterior distributions of physical properties of >10>10 million DESI Bright Galaxy Survey (BGS) galaxies. Each posterior distribution will be inferred from joint Bayesian modeling of observed photometry and spectroscopy using Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampling and the [arXiv:2202.01809] stellar population synthesis (SPS) model. To make this computationally feasible, PROVABGS will use a neural emulator for the SPS model to accelerate the posterior inference. In this work, we present how we construct the emulator using the [arXiv:1911.11778] approach and verify that it can be used to accurately infer galaxy properties. We confirm that the emulator is in excellent agreement with the original SPS model with ≪1%\ll 1\% error and is 100×100\times faster. In addition, we demonstrate that the posteriors of galaxy properties derived using the emulator are also in excellent agreement with those inferred using the original model. The neural emulator presented in this work is essential in bypassing the computational challenge posed in constructing the PROVABGS catalog. Furthermore, it demonstrates the advantages of emulation for scaling sophisticated analyses to millions of galaxies.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, submitted to ApJ

    CP violation at one loop in the polarization-independent chargino production in e+e- collisions

    Recently Osland and Vereshagin noticed, based on sample calculations of some box diagrams, that in unpolarised e+e- collisions CP-odd effects in the non-diagonal chargino-pair production process are generated at one-loop. Here we perform a full one-loop analysis of these effects and point out that in some cases the neglected vertex and self-energy contributions may play a dominant role. We also show that CP asymmetries in chargino production are sensitive not only to the phase of mu parameter in the chargino sector but also to the phase of stop trilinear coupling A_t.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figure
