    The Highly Oscillatory Behavior of Automorphic Distributions for SL(2)

    Automorphic distributions for SL(2) arise as boundary values of modular forms and, in a more subtle manner, from Maass forms. In the case of modular forms of weight one or of Maass forms, the automorphic distributions have continuous first antiderivatives. We recall earlier results of one of us on the Holder continuity of these continuous functions and relate them to results of other authors; this involves a generalization of classical theorems on Fourier series by S. Bernstein and Hardy-Littlewood. We then show that the antiderivatives are non-differentiable at all irrational points, as well as all, or in certain cases, some rational points. We include graphs of several of these functions, which clearly display a high degree of oscillation.     The Structure of Barium in the hcp Phase Under High Pressure

    Recent experimental results on two hcp phases of barium under high pressure show interesting variation of the lattice parameters. They are here interpreted in terms of electronic structure calculation by using the LMTO method and generalized pseudopotential theory (GPT) with a NFE-TBB approach. In phase II the dramatic drop in c/a is an instability analogous to that in the group II metals but with the transfer of s to d electrons playing a crucial role in Ba.     High voltage electron microscopy and electron diffraction of pyroxenes in type B lunar samples from Apollo 11

    Lunar pyroxene 10044 specimens cleaved and sectioned by diamond knife ultramicrotomy were examined by standard (75 to 100 kV) and high voltage (200 kV) electron microscopy and diffraction. Salient findings based on evaluation of 2000 plates show uniform 300 to 600 A-wide bands, probably corresponding to single crystal domains, with lattice spacings of 2. A High resolution bright and dark field images of iron-rich and magnesium-rich crystals were compared with corresponding electron diffraction patterns. Possible relations of observed structures to magnetic domains were considered

    Electronic Energy Spectra of Square and Cubic Fibonacci Quasicrystals

    Understanding the electronic properties of quasicrystals, in particular the dependence of these properties on dimension, is among the interesting open problems in the field of quasicrystals. We investigate an off-diagonal tight-binding Hamiltonian on the separable square and cubic Fibonacci quasicrystals. We use the well-studied singular-continuous energy spectrum of the 1-dimensional Fibonacci quasicrystal to obtain exact results regarding the transitions between different spectral behaviors of the square and cubic quasicrystals. We use analytical results for the addition of 1d spectra to obtain bounds on the range in which the higher-dimensional spectra contain an absolutely continuous component. We also perform a direct numerical study of the spectra, obtaining good results for the square Fibonacci quasicrystal, and rough estimates for the cubic Fibonacci quasicrystal

    Quantum Particles Constrained on Cylindrical Surfaces with Non-constant Diameter

    We present a theoretical formulation of the one-electron problem constrained on the surface of a cylindrical tubule with varying diameter. Because of the cylindrical symmetry, we may reduce the problem to a one-dimensional equation for each angular momentum quantum number mm along the cylindrical axis. The geometrical properties of the surface determine the electronic structures through the geometry dependent term in the equation. Magnetic fields parallel to the axis can readily be incorporated. Our formulation is applied to simple examples such as the catenoid and the sinusoidal tubules. The existence of bound states as well as the band structures, which are induced geometrically, for these surfaces are shown. To show that the electronic structures can be altered significantly by applying a magnetic field, Aharonov-Bohm effects in these examples are demonstrated.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures, submitted to J.     Multipole nonlinearity of metamaterials

    We report on the linear and nonlinear optical response of metamaterials evoked by first and second order multipoles. The analytical ground on which our approach bases permits for new insights into the functionality of metamaterials. For the sake of clarity we focus here on a key geometry, namely the split-ring resonator, although the introduced formalism can be applied to arbitrary structures. We derive the equations that describe linear and nonlinear light propagation where special emphasis is put on second harmonic generation. This contribution basically aims at stretching versatile and existing concepts to describe light propagation in nonlinear media towards the realm of metamaterials.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure

    Kvalitativni i kvantitativni sastav zajednice bentosa u proceni kvaliteta vode reke Neretve na lokalitetima Višići i Žitomišlići

    This paper is a result of the research of the river Neretva benthos at sites Zitomislici and Visici (downstream of Mostar) from 2005. to 2010. The sampling was done once a year, and 'kick-sampling' sampling was used for macrointervertebrates, while the samples for the analysis of the phytobenthos composition were scraped from the sediment with a scalpel or run-off from the sediment (standard EN 13946: 2003 Water quality – Guidance). Results of the analysis point to 62 algae taxa at site Zitomislici and 69 at site Visici. Macrointervertebrates benthos composition points on dominance of snails and sensible groups of larvae stages of the EPT insect groups. Saprobic values of both biological factors are relatively balanced and for the river Neretva, at site Zitomislici, point to oligo/betamesosaprobe level, while at site Visici they point to betamesosaprobe level of quality
