boosting in kernel regression
In this paper, we investigate the theoretical and empirical properties of
boosting with kernel regression estimates as weak learners. We show that
each step of boosting reduces the bias of the estimate by two orders of
magnitude, while it does not deteriorate the order of the variance. We
illustrate the theoretical findings by some simulated examples. Also, we
demonstrate that boosting is superior to the use of higher-order kernels,

Conformal symmetry transformations and nonlinear Maxwell equations
We make use of the conformal compactification of Minkowski spacetime
to explore a way of describing general, nonlinear Maxwell fields with conformal
symmetry. We distinguish the inverse Minkowski spacetime
obtained via conformal inversion, so as to discuss a doubled compactified
spacetime on which Maxwell fields may be defined. Identifying with the
projective light cone in -dimensional spacetime, we write two
independent conformal-invariant functionals of the -dimensional Maxwellian
field strength tensors -- one bilinear, the other trilinear in the field
strengths -- which are to enter general nonlinear constitutive equations. We
also make some remarks regarding the dimensional reduction procedure as we

Personalisation and recommender systems in digital libraries
Widespread use of the Internet has resulted in digital libraries that are increasingly used by diverse communities of users for diverse purposes and in which sharing and collaboration have become important social elements. As such libraries become commonplace, as their contents and services become more varied, and as their patrons become more experienced with computer technology, users will expect more sophisticated services from these libraries. A simple search function, normally an integral part of any digital library, increasingly leads to user frustration as user needs become more complex and as the volume of managed information increases. Proactive digital libraries, where the library evolves from being passive and untailored, are seen as offering great potential for addressing and overcoming these issues and include techniques such as personalisation and recommender systems. In this paper, following on from the DELOS/NSF Working Group on Personalisation and Recommender Systems for Digital Libraries, which met and reported during 2003, we present some background material on the scope of personalisation and recommender systems in digital libraries. We then outline the working group’s vision for the evolution of digital libraries and the role that personalisation and recommender systems will play, and we present a series of research challenges and specific recommendations and research priorities for the field
Systematic Analysis of Poly(o-aminophenol) Humidity Sensors
This is the final version. Available on open access from the American Chemical Society via the DOI in this recordA thin film of poly(o-aminophenol), POAP, has been used as a sensor for various types of toxic and nontoxic gases: a gateway between the digital and physical worlds. We have carried out a systematic mechanistic investigation of POAP as a humidity sensor; how does it sense different gases? POAP has several convenient features such as flexibility, transparency, and suitability for large-scale manufacturing. With an appropriate theoretical method, molecular oligomers of POAP, NH and O functional groups and the perpendicular side of the polymeric body, are considered as attacking sites for humidity sensing. It is found that the NH position of the polymer acts as an electrophilic center: able to accept electronic cloud density and energetically more favorable compared to the O site. The O site acts as a nucleophilic center and donates electronic cloud density toward H2Ovap. In conclusion, only these two sites are involved in the sensing process which leads to strong intermolecular hydrogen bonding, having a 1.96 Å bond distance and ΔE ∼ -35 kcal mol-1. Impaired Competence for Pretense in Children with Autism: Exploring Potential Cognitive Predictors.
Lack of pretense in children with autism has been explained by a number of theoretical explanations, including impaired mentalising, impaired response inhibition, and weak central coherence. This study aimed to empirically test each of these theories. Children with autism (n=60) were significantly impaired relative to controls (n=65) when interpreting pretense, thereby supporting a competence deficit hypothesis. They also showed impaired mentalising and response inhibition, but superior local processing indicating weak central coherence. Regression analyses revealed that mentalising significantly and independently predicted pretense. The results are interpreted as supporting the impaired mentalising theory and evidence against competing theories invoking impaired response inhibition or a local processing bias. The results of this study have important implications for treatment and intervention

Origin of shifts in the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) frequency for noble
metal (Au, Ag) nanoclusters are discussed in this book chapter. Spill out of
electron from the Fermi surface is considered as the origin of red shift. On
the other hand, both screening of electrons of the noble metal in porous media
and quantum effect of screen surface electron are considered for the observed

Increasing numbers of people living with a long-term health condition are putting personal health information online, including on discussion boards. Many discussion boards contain material of potential use to researchers; however, it is unclear how this information can and should be used by researchers. To date there has been no evaluation of the views of those individuals sharing health information online regarding the use of their shared information for research purposes
Magnetic resonance imaging sequence evaluation of an MR Linac system; early clinical experience.
Objectives:To systematically identify the preferred magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequences following volunteer imaging on a 1.5 Tesla (T) MR-Linear Accelerator (MR Linac) for future protocol development. Methods:Non-patient volunteers were recruited to a Research and Ethics committee approved prospective MR-only imaging study on a 1.5T MR Linac system. Volunteers attended 1-3 imaging sessions that included a combination of mDixon, T1w, T2w sequences using 2-dimensional (2D) and 3-dimensional (3D) acquisitions. Each sequence was acquired over 2-7 minutes and reviewed by a panel of 3 observers to evaluate image quality using a visual grading analysis based on a 4-point Likert scale. Sequences were acquired and modified iteratively until deemed fit for purpose (online image matching or re-planning) and all observers agreed they were suitable in 3 volunteers. Results:26 volunteers underwent 31 imaging sessions of six general anatomical regions. Images were acquired in one or two of six general anatomical regions: male pelvis (n = 9), female pelvis (n = 4), chestwall/breast (n = 5), lung/oesophagus (n = 5), abdomen (n = 3) and head and neck (n = 5). Images were acquired using a pre-defined exam-card that on average, included six sequences (range 2-10), with a maximum scan time of approximately one hour. The majority of observers preferred T2-weighted sequences. The thorax teams were the only groups to prefer T1-weighted imaging. Conclusions:An iterative process identified sequence agreement in all anatomical regions. These sequences will now be evaluated in patient volunteers. Non-Equilibrium Edge Channel Spectroscopy in the Integer Quantum Hall Regime
Heat transport has large potentialities to unveil new physics in mesoscopic
systems. A striking illustration is the integer quantum Hall regime, where the
robustness of Hall currents limits information accessible from charge
transport. Consequently, the gapless edge excitations are incompletely
understood. The effective edge states theory describes them as prototypal
one-dimensional chiral fermions - a simple picture that explains a large body
of observations and calls for quantum information experiments with quantum
point contacts in the role of beam splitters. However, it is in ostensible
disagreement with the prevailing theoretical framework that predicts, in most
situations, additional gapless edge modes. Here, we present a setup which gives
access to the energy distribution, and consequently to the energy current, in
an edge channel brought out-of-equilibrium. This provides a stringent test of
whether the additional states capture part of the injected energy. Our results
show it is not the case and thereby demonstrate regarding energy transport, the
quantum optics analogy of quantum point contacts and beam splitters. Beyond the
quantum Hall regime, this novel spectroscopy technique opens a new window for
