Development of the deep flexor tendons and lumbricalis muscle in the hand and foot: a histological study using human mid-term fetuses
To revisit fetal development of the deep flexor tendons of the hand and foot, we examined the paraffin-embedded histology of 20 mid-term fetuses at 8-15 weeks of estimated gestational age (35-118 mm crown-rump length or CRL). At 8-9 weeks, in front of the metacarpal bones, the flexor pollicis longus and flexor digitorum profundus muscles provided a plate-like, common tendon from which the lumbricalis muscles originated. However, in the foot, we had no evidence of such a common tendon. The flexor pollicis tendon was separated from the common tendon at 9-10 weeks possibly due to a mechanical stress from the laterally growing thumb. Notably, at the lumbricalis muscle origins at 10-12 weeks, the flexor digitorum profundus and flexor digitorum longus tendons remained undifferentiated and the primitive tenocytes were dispersed from them. The dispersed cells seemed to develop into an interface tissue between the lumbricalis muscle fiber and the deep tendon. In 3 of 5 specimens at 15 weeks, we found excess number of the flexor digitorum profundus tendons (5-7) in the proximal side of the lumbricalis muscle origin. However, the excess tendons dispersed in the lumbricalis muscle origin. The development of the lumbricalis muscle origin might follow the tendon splitting for 4 fingers. However, conversely, we hypothesized that the developing lumbricalis muscles re-arranged the deep flexor tendons to provide a configuration of “one deep tendon per one finger (or toe)”. The quadrates plantae muscle seemed not to contribute on the re-arrangement
A discrete host-parasitoid model with development of pesticide resistance and IPM strategies
The development of pesticide resistance significantly affects the outcomes of pest control. A quantitative depiction of the effects of pesticide resistance development on integrated pest management (IPM) strategies and pest control outcomes is challenging. To address this problem, a discrete host-parasitoid model with pesticide resistance development and IPM strategies is proposed and analyzed. The threshold condition of pest eradication which reveals the relationship between the development of pest resistance and the rate of natural enemy releases is provided and analyzed, and the optimal rate for releasing natural enemies was obtained based on this threshold condition. Furthermore, in order to reduce adverse effects of the pesticide on natural enemies, the model has been extended to consider the spraying of pesticide and releases of natural enemies at different times. The effects of the dynamic complexity and different resistance development equations on the main results are also discussed
Observation of the and the Y(2175) in
The cross sections for and e^+ e^- \to \phi
\fzero are measured from threshold to using
initial state radiation. The analysis is based on a data sample of 673
fb collected on and below the resonance with the Belle
detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy collider. First measurements
are reported for the resonance parameters of the in the
mode: MeV/ and MeV/. A structure at ,
corresponding to the so called Y(2175), is observed; its mass and width are
determined to be MeV/ and , respectively.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures. Add one plot. Accepted by Phys.Rev.D(RC
Evidence of the Purely Leptonic Decay B- --> tau- nu_tau-bar
We present the first evidence of the decay B- --> tau- nu_tau-bar using 414
fb^-1 of data collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at
the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. Events are tagged by fully
reconstructing one of the B mesons in hadronic modes. We detect the signal with
a significance of 3.5 standard deviations including systematics, and measure
the branching fraction to be Br(B- --> tau- nu_tau-bar) = (1.79
+0.56-0.49(stat) +0.46-0.51(syst))*10^-4. This implies that f_B = 0.229
+0.036-0.031(stat) +0.034-0.037(syst) GeV and is the first direct measurement
of this quantity.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, to appear in Physical Review Letter
Measurements of exclusive B_s^0 decays at the Y(5S) resonance
Several exclusive decays are studied using a 1.86 fb-1 data sample
collected at the Y(5S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric
energy e^+ e^- collider. In the decay mode we find 10
candidates and measure the corresponding branching fraction. Combining
the B_s^0 -> D_s^{(*)-} \pi^+, B_s^0 -> D_s^{(*)-} \rho^+, B_s^0 -> J/\psi \phi
and B_s^0 -> J/\psi \eta decay modes, a significant signal is observed.
The ratio \sigma (e^+ e^- -> B_s^* \bar{B}_s^*) / \sigma (e^+ e^- -> B_s^{(*)}
\bar{B}_s^{(*)}) = (93^{+7}_{-9} \pm 1)% is obtained at the Y(5S) energy,
indicating that meson production proceeds predominantly through the
creation of pairs. The and meson masses are
measured to be M(B_s^0)=(5370 \pm 1 \pm 3)MeV/c^2 and M(B_s^*)=(5418 \pm 1 \pm
3)MeV/c^2. Upper limits on the B_s^0 -> \gamma \gamma, B_s^0 -> \phi \gamma,
B_s^0 -> K^+ K^- and B_s^0 -> D_s^{(*)+} D_s^{(*)-} branching fractions are
also reported.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, published in Phys. Rev. D76, 012002 (2007

Study of charmonia in four-meson final states produced in two-photon collisions
We report measurements of charmonia produced in two-photon collisions and
decaying to four-meson final states, where the meson is either a charged pion
or a charged kaon. The analysis is based on a 395fb^{-1} data sample
accumulated with the Belle detector at the KEKB electron-positron collider. We
observe signals for the three C-even charmonia eta_c(1S), chi_{c0}(1P) and
chi_{c2}(1P) in the pi^+pi^-pi^+pi^-, K^+K^-pi^+pi^- and K^+K^-K^+K^- decay
modes. No clear signals for eta_c(2S) production are found in these decay
modes. We have also studied resonant structures in charmonium decays to
two-body intermediate meson resonances. We report the products of the
two-photon decay width and the branching fractions, Gamma_{gamma gamma}B, for
each of the charmonium decay modes.Comment: 22 pages, 12 figure
Search for B+ -> D*+ pi0 decay
We report on a search for the doubly Cabibbo suppressed decay B+ -> D*+ pi0,
based on a data sample of 657 million BBbar pairs collected at the Upsilon(4S)
resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy e+ e- collider.
We find no significant signal and set an upper limit of Br(B+ -> D*+ pi0) < 3.6
x 10^-6 at the 90% confidence level. This limit can be used to constrain the
ratio between suppressed and favored B -> D* pi decay amplitudes, r < 0.051, at
the 90% confidence level.Comment: 5pages, 2figures, submitted to PRL (v1); PRL published version (v2:

Moments of the Hadronic Invariant Mass Spectrum in B --> X_c l nu Decays at Belle
We present a measurement of the hadronic invariant mass squared (M^2_X)
spectrum in charmed semileptonic B meson decays B --> X_c l nu based on 140
fb^-1 of Belle data collected near the Y(4S) resonance. We determine the first,
the second central and the second non-central moments of this spectrum for
lepton energy thresholds ranging between 0.7 and 1.9 GeV. Full correlations
between these measurements are evaluated.Comment: published version of the paper (one figure added, minor changes in

Improved measurement of CP-violating parameters in rho+rho- decays
We present a measurement of the CP-violating asymmetry in rho+rho- decays
using 535 million BBbar pairs collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB
e+e- collider. We measure CP-violating coefficients A = 0.16 +- 0.21(stat) +-
0.07 (syst) and S = 0.19 +- 0.30(stat) +- 0.07 (syst}. These values are used to
determine the unitarity triangle angle phi_2 using an isospin analysis; the
solution consistent with Standard Model lies in the range 53 < phi_2 < 114 deg.
