    The impact of E-HR on the roles and competencies of HR

    Since the emergence of the internet, a new era of HR termed as E-HRM has begun, dramatically reengineering the HR practices and processes to operate in a highly competitive market. As a result, HRM has undergone a change process in terms of HRM functions over the last decade. Observations through previous studies lead us to the interest of seeking for both positive and negative impacts of E-HR to HRM function in organizations, particularly to the changes in roles and competencies of HR specialists as well as non-HR staff (line managers and employees). This research is a qualitative single case study based on semi-structured interview conducted via phone calls. Data was collected during semi-structured interviews with 10 middle management executives including 4 HR managers and 6 other functional managers in a successful MNC in the industry of milk and dairies in Vietnam. The case company is in the first phase of strategically transforming HR department at different levels and has just adopted ICTs in recent years. There is a trend to continue the automation of HR service in the next few years. In addition, the findings suggest that the delivery of HR services with a small range of web-based tools used hardly enables the expected changes in HR’s role toward a strategic partner though it supports the shift of HR focus to the role as employee champion. The initiation of E-HRM practices is pushing HR to move from a traditional bureaucratic department to a client-friendly approach which potentially targets at the role of an employee champion. Another tangible effect caused by E-HRM is the devolvement of HR responsibilities to line management though the support from HR technology to their daily work is unobvious. However, improvements in competencies of HR professional after the implementation of E-HRM were found to be inconsiderable. A preference of developing people related skills such as communication, teamwork, consultancy and negotiation to other types of competencies existed among HR professionals, though they were suggested to focus on upgrading the business knowledge, critical thinking and leadership.fi=Opinnäytetyö kokotekstinä PDF-muodossa.|en=Thesis fulltext in PDF format.|sv=Lärdomsprov tillgängligt som fulltext i PDF-format

    Decreasing behavior of the depth functions of edge ideals

    Let II be the edge ideal of a connected non-bipartite graph and RR the base polynomial ring. Then depthR/I1\operatorname{depth} R/I \ge 1 and depthR/It=0\operatorname{depth} R/I^t = 0 for t1t \gg 1. We give combinatorial conditions for depthR/It=1\operatorname{depth} R/I^t = 1 for some tt in between and show that the depth function is non-increasing thereafter. Especially, the depth function quickly decreases to 0 after reaching 1. We show that if depthR/I=1\operatorname{depth} R/I = 1 then depthR/I2=0\operatorname{depth} R/I^2 = 0 and if depthR/I2=1\operatorname{depth} R/I^2 = 1 then depthR/I5=0\operatorname{depth} R/I^5 = 0. Other similar results suggest that if depthR/It=1\operatorname{depth} R/I^t = 1 then depthR/It+3=0\operatorname{depth} R/I^{t+3} = 0. This a surprising phenomenon because the depth of a power can determine a smaller depth of another power. Furthermore, we are able to give a simple combinatorial criterion for depthR/I(t)=1\operatorname{depth} R/I^{(t)} = 1 for t1t \gg 1 and show that the condition depthR/I(t)=1\operatorname{depth} R/I^{(t)} = 1 is persistent, where I(t)I^{(t)} denotes the tt-th symbolic powers of II.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figure

    Innovative Firm Performance Management Using a Recommendation System Based on Fuzzy Association Rules: The Case of Vietnam’s Apparel Small and Medium Enterprises

    Purpose: This study aims to apply a classification algorithm based-on fuzzy association rules (FARs) to improve the effectiveness of firms' performance prediction problem. Particularly, this study investigates potential FARs exists between inputs and outputs of firms' performance management process. These extracted FARs could be used to help firm’s managers make better dicision to improve firm’s performance.   Theoretical framework: Private enterprise development has been identified as key to Vietnam's economy that was commonly depended on state enterprise. For that, understanding and improving firms' performance and productivity is one of the most important tasks, from both macro and micro perspectives. There have been many studies on Vietnam's firm performance, but mostly relying on econometric methods that limit the understanding with structural equations. This study, instead, attempts to utilize new achievements of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for this task. Among AI techniques, fuzzy association rule is able to address the relationship between input factors and firm performance indicators. For each company, the finding FARs can be used to predict its performance and then change the business plan or react to improve weekness of organization.   Design/Methodology/Approach: The proposal model is applied on data of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) of the apparel industry in Vietnam in the period 2010-2015. The sample consist of a total of 23637 observation of  Vietnam firms in apparel and textile industry and contains 16 main criterias for those firms.   Finding: A recommendation system (RS) is constructed from disclosed FARs and is a key factor in a novel innovative firms' performance management process. The percentage of classified instances using the mining FARs is not quite high (about 82%), but it is not always the case. Vietnam’s apparel dataset includes rare classes of ROA, therefore applying only frequent FARs is not enough. This issue can be fixed by using both frequent and infrequent FARs.       Research, practical & social implications: The proposed model has a great opportunity to use not only in the small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) of the apparel industry but other industrial sectors. FARs support the well-understand of firm performance to firm’s manager and help them better to react. Besides, FARs could be used to create RSs that makes alerts about risk automatically.   Originality/Value: The fact, our current study is the first to inspect the ability of FARs on SMEs of the apparel industry in Vietnam. This study provides theoritical potential knowledge and empirical evidence in the application of FARs technology in innovative firm’s management

    Lactic Acid Fermentation of Radish and Cucumber in Rice Bran Bed

    The Lactobacillus plantarum (L. plantarum) strain XK1.4 isolated from pickled vegetables was applied for cucumber and radish fermentation using rice bran. Fermented radish and cucumber pickles are the lactic acid fermentation products formed through the influence of microorganisms present in the environment. The main objective of the study is to select the appropriate rice bran type (white/yellow rice bran) and treatment methods (roasting time), and also choose suitable fermentation conditions (initial microbial population and added salt content) for traditional pickled cucumber and white radish with appropriate lactic acid content and high acceptability by consumers. The results showed that the quality of white bran was better than yellow bran and less oxidized, the total free fatty acid was also much lower than that of yellow bran. It was found that the lactic acid content analyses provided significant different results for the samples, compared to the control (without inoculant addition). The pickled samples for which L. plantarum strain XK 1.4 was used displayed a better fermentation process. The lower concentration of bacteria added in the initial stage, the lower the acid content of the rice bran medium and the fermented products where L. plantarum strains were added. L. plantarum grew rapidly in rice bran fermenting bed of 10 CFU g at 25-26 °C and 3% NaCl. With the appropriate selection of fermentation parameters, it only takes about 4 days for the fermentation process (2 days of preparing rice bran medium and 2 days of fermenting white radish and cucumber) with high lactic acid content and consumer’s acceptability

    Energy Consumption Minimization for Autonomous Mobile Robot: A Convex Approximation Approach

    In this paper, we consider a trajectory design problem of an autonomous mobile robot working in industrial environments. In particular, we formulate an optimization problem that jointly determines the trajectory of the robot and the time step duration to minimize the energy consumption without obstacle collisions. We consider both static and moving obstacles scenarios. The optimization problems are nonconvex, and the main contribution of this work proposing successive convex approximation (SCA) algorithms to solve the nonconvex problems with the presence of both static and moving obstacles. In particular, we first consider the optimization problem in the scenario with static obstacles and then consider the optimization problem in the scenario with static and moving obstacles. Then, we propose two SCA algorithms to solve the nonconvex optimization problems in both the scenarios. Simulation results clearly show that the proposed algorithms outperform the A* algorithm, in terms of energy consumption. This shows the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms

    Straightforward Procedure for Laboratory Production of DNA Ladder

    DNA ladder is commonly used to determine the size of DNA fragments by electrophoresis in routine molecular biology laboratories. In this study, we report a new procedure to prepare a DNA ladder that consists of 10 fragments from 100 to 1000 bp. This protocol is a combination of routinely employed methods: cloning, PCR, and partial digestion with restriction enzymes. DNA fragments of 100 bp with unique restriction site at both ends were self-ligated to create a tandem repeat. Once being cloned, the tandem repeat was rapidly amplified by PCR and partially digested by restriction enzymes to produce a ladder containing multimers of the repeated DNA fragments. Our procedure for production of DNA ladder could be simple, time saving, and inexpensive in comparison with current ones widely used in most laboratories
