    Triadophilia: A Special Corner in the Landscape

    It is well known that there are a great many apparently consistent vacua of string theory. We draw attention to the fact that there appear to be very few Calabi--Yau manifolds with the Hodge numbers h^{11} and h^{21} both small. Of these, the case (h^{11}, h^{21})=(3,3) corresponds to a manifold on which a three generation heterotic model has recently been constructed. We point out also that there is a very close relation between this manifold and several familiar manifolds including the `three-generation' manifolds with \chi=-6 that were found by Tian and Yau, and by Schimmrigk, during early investigations. It is an intriguing possibility that we may live in a naturally defined corner of the landscape. The location of these three generation models with respect to a corner of the landscape is so striking that we are led to consider the possibility of transitions between heterotic vacua. The possibility of these transitions, that we here refer to as transgressions, is an old idea that goes back to Witten. Here we apply this idea to connect three generation vacua on different Calabi-Yau manifolds.Comment: 41 pages 4 pdf figures, one is large. Lett. 111, 243508 (2017) and may be found at https://doi.org/10.1063/1.5003288.The static and dynamic performance of vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) used as light-sources for optical interconnects is highly influenced by temperature. We study the effect of temperature on the performance of high-speed energy-efficient 980 nm VCSELs with a peak wavelength of the quantum well offset to the wavelength of the fundamental longitudinal device cavity mode so that they are aligned at around 60 °C. A simple method to obtain the thermal resistance of the VCSELs as a function of ambient temperature is described, allowing us to extract the active region temperature and the temperature dependence of the dynamic and static parameters. At low bias currents, we can see an increase of the −3 dB modulation bandwidth f−3dB with increasing active region temperature, which is different from the classically known situation. From the detailed analysis of f−3dB versus the active region temperature, we obtain a better understanding of the thermal limitations of VCSELs, giving a basis for next generation device designs with improved temperature stability

    Why do we need to sleep? What regulates when we sleep? And what dictates the number of hours we require? These are often viewed as three separate biological questions. Here, we propose they share molecular etiologies, whereby regulators of sleep schedules and sleep duration also govern the physiological purposes of sleep. To support our hypothesis, we review Mendelian human genetic variants sufficient to advance sleep-wake onset (PER2) and shorten sleep length (DEC2), and evaluate their emerging roles in immune responses that may rely on a sound night of slumber

    The idea of shipping container house is no longer a revolutionized to western country but in Asia country particularly in Malaysia it is relatively new. The idea of container house is relatively new and there is no clear sign of how far does Malaysian citizen can accept this idea. There is no indicator of what are the expectations from Malaysian citizen about the container house. This research serves as basic references for both government and private sector to the future property industry development of shipping container house as well as shipping container non-residential building in Malaysia to pursue Malaysia’s unity, economic and national integration. The purpose of this study is to test the feasibility of using ISO shipping container to build low cost house. Four set of questionnaires are prepared to assess the opinion of respondents about the acceptance of shipping container house. The result obtained is that the acceptance level of the idea to live inside a container house is only 45% but the acceptance level of using shipping container as means of storage, office, and business development is highly acceptable by Malaysian citizen

    Enhanced granular medium-based tube press hardening

    Active and passive control strategies of internal pressure for hot forming of tubes and profiles with granular media are described. Force transmission and plastic deformation of granular medium is experimentally investigated. Friction between tube, granular medium and die as also the external stress field are shown to be essential for the process understanding. Wrinkling, thinning and insufficient forming of the tube establishes the process window for the active pressure process. By improving the punch geometry and controlling tribological conditions, the process limits are extended. Examples for the passive pressure process reveal new opportunities for hot forming of tubes and profiles.Comment: 4 pages, 11 figure

    Stellar Structure and Tests of Modified Gravity

    Theories that attempt to explain cosmic acceleration by modifying gravity typically introduces a long-range scalar force that needs to be screened on small scales. One common screening mechanism is the chameleon, where the scalar force is screened in environments with a sufficiently deep gravitational potential, but acts unimpeded in regions with a shallow gravitational potential. This leads to a variation in the overall gravitational G with environment. We show such a variation can occur within a star itself, significantly affecting its evolution and structure, provided that the host galaxy is unscreened. The effect is most pronounced for red giants, which would be smaller by a factor of tens of percent and thus hotter by 100's of K, depending on the parameters of the underlying scalar-tensor theory. Careful measurements of these stars in suitable environments (nearby dwarf galaxies not associated with groups or clusters) would provide constraints on the chameleon mechanism that are four orders of magnitude better than current large scale structure limits, and two orders of magnitude better than present solar system tests.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure, submitted to Ap

    A critical evaluation of Waste Incineration Plants in Wuhan (China) Based on Site Selection, Environmental Influence, Public health and Public Participation

    With the rapid development of the waste incineration industry in China, top priority has been given to the problem of pollution caused by waste incineration. This study is the first attempt to assess all the waste incineration plants in Wuhan, the only national key city in central China, in terms of environmental impact, site selection, public health and public participation. By using a multi-criterion assessment model for economic, social, public health and environmental effects, this study indicates these incineration plants are established without much consideration of the local residents’ health and environment. A location analysis is also applied and some influences of waste incineration plants are illustrated. This study further introduces a signaling game model to prove that public participation is a necessary condition for improving the environmental impact assessment and increasing total welfare of different interest groups in China. This study finally offers some corresponding recommendations for improving the environmental impact assessments of waste incineration projects

    Short‐term time step convergence in a climate model

    This paper evaluates the numerical convergence of very short (1 h) simulations carried out with a spectral‐element (SE) configuration of the Community Atmosphere Model version 5 (CAM5). While the horizontal grid spacing is fixed at approximately 110 km, the process‐coupling time step is varied between 1800 and 1 s to reveal the convergence rate with respect to the temporal resolution. Special attention is paid to the behavior of the parameterized subgrid‐scale physics. First, a dynamical core test with reduced dynamics time steps is presented. The results demonstrate that the experimental setup is able to correctly assess the convergence rate of the discrete solutions to the adiabatic equations of atmospheric motion. Second, results from full‐physics CAM5 simulations with reduced physics and dynamics time steps are discussed. It is shown that the convergence rate is 0.4—considerably slower than the expected rate of 1.0. Sensitivity experiments indicate that, among the various subgrid‐scale physical parameterizations, the stratiform cloud schemes are associated with the largest time‐stepping errors, and are the primary cause of slow time step convergence. While the details of our findings are model specific, the general test procedure is applicable to any atmospheric general circulation model. The need for more accurate numerical treatments of physical parameterizations, especially the representation of stratiform clouds, is likely common in many models.
