Tunable cavity resonator with ramp shaped supports
A cavity for a hydrogen maser is described consisting of three parts which provide highly stable mechanical and thermal expansion characteristics for the cavity and ease of tuning. The three parts which are made of a glass ceramic material having a very small thermal expansion coefficient (1) a top plate, (2) a cylinder with three interrupted helical ramps at its bottom, and (3) a base which includes a bottom plate and three ramp lugs on which the helical ramps of the cylinder rest when the cylinder is placed on the base with the bottom plate in the cylinder. Cavity tuning is achieved by rotating the cylinder and thereby raising or lowering it on the base, which results in changing the cylinder volume by changing the distance between the bottom and top plates

Controlled Manipulation of Individual Vortices in a Superconductor
We report controlled local manipulation of single vortices by low temperature
magnetic force microscope (MFM) in a thin film of superconducting Nb. We are
able to position the vortices in arbitrary configurations and to measure the
distribution of local depinning forces. This technique opens up new
possibilities for the characterization and use of vortices in superconductors
Short-time dynamics of finite-size mean-field systems
We study the short-time dynamics of a mean-field model with non-conserved
order parameter (Curie-Weiss with Glauber dynamics) by solving the associated
Fokker-Planck equation. We obtain closed-form expressions for the first moments
of the order parameter, near to both the critical and spinodal points, starting
from different initial conditions. This allows us to confirm the validity of
the short-time dynamical scaling hypothesis in both cases. Although the
procedure is illustrated for a particular mean-field model, our results can be
straightforwardly extended to generic models with a single order parameter.Comment: accepted for publication in JSTA
