Contraction of the abdominal muscles associated with movement of the lower limb
Background and Purpose. Activity of the trunk muscles is essential for maintaining stability of the lumbar spine because of the unstable structure of that portion of the spine. A model involving evaluation of the response of the lumbar multifidus and abdominal muscles to leg movement was developed to evaluate this function. Subjects. To examine this function in healthy persons, 9 male and 6 female subjects (mean age = 20.6 years, SD = 2.3) with no history of low back pain were studied. Methods. Fine-wire and surface electromyography electrodes were used to record the activity of selected trunk muscles and the prime movers for hip flexion, abduction, and extension during hip movements in each of these directions. Results. Trunk muscle activity occurring prior to activity of the prime mover of the limb was associated with hip movement in each direction. The transversus abdominis (TrA) muscle was invariably the first muscle that was active. Although reaction time for the TrA and oblique abdominal muscles was consistent across movement directions, reaction time for the rectus abdominis and multifidus muscles varied with the direction of limb movement. Conclusion and Discussion. Results suggest that the central nervous st stem deals with stabilization of the spine by contraction of the abdominal and multifidus muscles in anticipation of reactive forces produced by limb movement. The TrA and oblique abdominal muscles appear to contribute to a function not related to the direction of these forces
One-Particle Excitation of the Two-Dimensional Hubbard Model
The real part of the self-energy of interacting two-dimensional electrons has
been calculated in the t-matrix approximation. It is shown that the forward
scattering results in an anomalous term leading to the vanishing
renormalization factor of the one-particle Green function, which is a
non-perturbative effect of the interaction U. The present result is a
microscopic demonstration of the claim by Anderson based on the conventional
many-body theory. The effect of the damping of the interacting electrons, which

Constructing the Tree-Level Yang-Mills S-Matrix Using Complex Factorization
A remarkable connection between BCFW recursion relations and constraints on
the S-matrix was made by Benincasa and Cachazo in 0705.4305, who noted that
mutual consistency of different BCFW constructions of four-particle amplitudes
generates non-trivial (but familiar) constraints on three-particle coupling
constants --- these include gauge invariance, the equivalence principle, and
the lack of non-trivial couplings for spins >2. These constraints can also be
derived with weaker assumptions, by demanding the existence of four-point
amplitudes that factorize properly in all unitarity limits with complex
momenta. From this starting point, we show that the BCFW prescription can be
interpreted as an algorithm for fully constructing a tree-level S-matrix, and
that complex factorization of general BCFW amplitudes follows from the
factorization of four-particle amplitudes. The allowed set of BCFW deformations
is identified, formulated entirely as a statement on the three-particle sector,
and using only complex factorization as a guide. Consequently, our analysis
based on the physical consistency of the S-matrix is entirely independent of
field theory. We analyze the case of pure Yang-Mills, and outline a proof for
gravity. For Yang-Mills, we also show that the well-known scaling behavior of
BCFW-deformed amplitudes at large z is a simple consequence of factorization.
For gravity, factorization in certain channels requires asymptotic behavior

A survey of compiler development aids
A theoretical background was established for the compilation process by dividing it into five phases and explaining the concepts and algorithms that underpin each. The five selected phases were lexical analysis, syntax analysis, semantic analysis, optimization, and code generation. Graph theoretical optimization techniques were presented, and approaches to code generation were described for both one-pass and multipass compilation environments. Following the initial tutorial sections, more than 20 tools that were developed to aid in the process of writing compilers were surveyed. Eight of the more recent compiler development aids were selected for special attention - SIMCMP/STAGE2, LANG-PAK, COGENT, XPL, AED, CWIC, LIS, and JOCIT. The impact of compiler development aids were assessed some of their shortcomings and some of the areas of research currently in progress were inspected
