Designing community care systems with AUML
This paper describes an approach to developing an appropriate agent environment appropriate for use in community care applications. Key to its success is that software designers collaborate with environment builders to provide the levels of cooperation and support required within an integrated agent–oriented community system. Agent-oriented Unified Modeling Language (AUML) is a practical approach to the analysis, design, implementation and management of such an agent-based system, whilst providing the power and expressiveness necessary to support the specification, design and organization of a health care service. The background of an agent-based community care application to support the elderly is described. Our approach to building agent–oriented software development solutions emphasizes the importance of AUML as a fundamental initial step in producing more general agent–based architectures. This approach aims to present an effective methodology for an agent software development process using a service oriented approach, by addressing the agent decomposition, abstraction, and organization characteristics, whilst reducing its complexity by exploiting AUML’s productivity potential. </p
Resonant Tunneling in Truly Axial Symmetry Mn12 Single-Molecule Magnets: Sharp Crossover between Thermally Assisted and Pure Quantum Tunneling
Magnetization measurements of a truly axial symmetry Mn12-tBuAc molecular
nanomagnet with a spin ground state of S = 10 show resonance tunneling. This
compound has the same magnetic anisotropy as Mn12-Ac but the molecules are
better isolated and the crystals have less disorder and a higher symmetry.
Hysteresis loop measurements at several temperatures reveal a well-resolved
step fine-structure which is due to level crossings of excited states. All step
positions can be modeled by a simple spin Hamiltonian. The crossover between
thermally assisted and pure quantum tunneling can be investigated with
unprecedented detail.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figure
Z -> b\bar{b} Versus Dynamical Electroweak Symmetry Breaking involving the Top Quark
In models of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking which sensitively
involve the third generation, such as top quark condensation, the effects of
the new dynamics can show up experimentally in Z->b\bar{b}. We compare the
sensitivity of Z->b\bar{b} and top quark production at the Tevatron to models
of the new physics. Z->b\bar{b} is a relatively more sensitive probe to new
strongly coupled U(1) gauge bosons, while it is generally less sensitive a
probe to new physics involving color octet gauge bosons as is top quark
production itself. Nonetheless, to accomodate a significant excess in
Z->b\bar{b} requires choosing model parameters that may be ruled out within run
I(b) at the Tevatron.Comment: LaTex file, 19 pages + 2 Figs., Fermilab-Pub-94/231-

Solar-cycle variation of the sound-speed asphericity from GONG and MDI data 1995-2000
We study the variation of the frequency splitting coefficients describing the
solar asphericity in both GONG and MDI data, and use these data to investigate
temporal sound-speed variations as a function of both depth and latitude during
the period from 1995-2000 and a little beyond. The temporal variations in even
splitting coefficients are found to be correlated to the corresponding
component of magnetic flux at the solar surface. We confirm that the
sound-speed variations associated with the surface magnetic field are
superficial. Temporally averaged results show a significant excess in sound
speed around 0.92 solar radii and latitude of 60 degrees.Comment: To be published in MNRAS, accepted July 200
Downwind hazard calculations for space shuttle launches at Kennedy Space Center and Vandenberg Air Force Base
The quantitative estimates are presented of pollutant concentrations associated with the emission of the major combustion products (HCl, CO, and Al2O3) to the lower atmosphere during normal launches of the space shuttle. The NASA/MSFC Multilayer Diffusion Model was used to obtain these calculations. Results are presented for nine sets of typical meteorological conditions at Kennedy Space Center, including fall, spring, and a sea-breeze condition, and six sets at Vandenberg AFB. In none of the selected typical meteorological regimes studied was a 10-min limit of 4 ppm exceeded
Prediction of engine exhaust concentrations downwind from the Delta-Thor Telsat-A launch of 9 November 1972
Results are presented of the downwind concentrations of engine exhaust by-products from the Delta-Thor Telsat-A vehicle launched from Cape Kennedy, Florida on November 9, 1972 (2014 EST). The meteorological conditions which existed are identified as well as the exhaust cloud rise and the results from the MSFC Multilayer Diffusion Model calculations. These predictions are compared to exhaust cloud sampled data acquired by the Langley Research Center personnel. Values of the surface level concentrations show that very little hydrochloric acid, carbon monoxide, or aluminum oxide reached the ground
LANDSAT/coastal processes
The author has identified the following significant results. Correlations between the satellite radiance values water color, Secchi disk visibility, turbidity, and attenuation coefficients were generally good. The residual was due to several factors including systematic errors in the remotely sensed data, errors, small time and space variations in the water quality measurements, and errors caused by experimental design. Satellite radiance values were closely correlated with the optical properties of the water
Dynamics of axial separation in long rotating drums
We propose a continuum description for the axial separation of granular
materials in a long rotating drum. The model, operating with two local
variables, concentration difference and the dynamic angle of repose, describes
both initial transient traveling wave dynamics and long-term segregation of the
binary mixture. Segregation proceeds through ultra-slow logarithmic coarsening.Comment: 4 pages, 3 Postscript figures; submitted to PR
