    Noninvasive evaluation of nicotinic acetylcholine receptor availability in mouse brain using single-photon emission computed tomography with [(123)I]5IA.

    INTRODUCTION: Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) are of great interest because they are implicated in higher brain functions. Nuclear medical imaging is one of the useful techniques for noninvasive evaluation of physiological and pathological function in living subjects. Recent progress in nuclear medical imaging modalities enables the clear visualization of the organs of small rodents. Thus, translational research using nuclear medical imaging in transgenic mice has become possible and helps to elucidate human disease pathology. However, imaging of α4β2 nAChRs in the mouse brain has not yet been performed. The purpose of this study was to assess the feasibility of single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) with 5-[(123)I]iodo-3-[2(S)-azetidinylmethoxy]pyridine ([(123)I]5IA) for evaluating α4β2 nAChR availability in the mouse brain. METHODS: A 60-min dynamic SPECT imaging session of α4β2 nAChRs in the mouse brain was performed. The regional distribution of radioactivity in the SPECT images was compared to the density of α4β2 nAChRs measured in an identical mouse. Alteration of nAChR density in the brains of Tg2576 mice was also evaluated. RESULTS: The mouse brain was clearly visualized by [(123)I]5IA-SPECT and probe accumulation was significantly inhibited by pretreatment with (-)-nicotine. The regional distribution of radioactivity in SPECT images showed a significant positive correlation with α4β2 nAChR density measured in an identical mouse brain. Moreover, [(123)I]5IA-SPECT was able to detect the up-regulation of α4β2 nAChRs in the brains of Tg2576 transgenic mice. CONCLUSIONS: [(123)I]5IA-SPECT imaging would be a promising tool for evaluating α4β2 nAChR availability in the mouse brain and may be useful in translational research focused on nAChR-related diseases

    Radionuclide Analysis on Bamboos following the Fukushima Nuclear Accident

    In response to contamination from the recent Fukushima nuclear accident, we conducted radionuclide analysis on bamboos sampled from six sites within a 25 to 980 km radius of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. Maximum activity concentrations of radiocesium 134Cs and 137Cs in samples from Fukushima city, 65 km away from the Fukushima Daiichi plant, were in excess of 71 and 79 kBq/kg, dry weight (DW), respectively. In Kashiwa city, 195 km away from the Fukushima Daiichi, the sample concentrations were in excess of 3.4 and 4.3 kBq/kg DW, respectively. In Toyohashi city, 440 km away from the Fukushima Daiichi, the concentrations were below the measurable limits of up to 4.5 Bq/kg DW. In the radiocesium contaminated samples, the radiocesium activity was higher in mature and fallen leaves than in young leaves, branches and culms

    Association between Histological Types and Enhancement of Dynamic CT for Primary Lung Cancer

    The aim of this study was to explore enhancement patterns of different types of primary lung cancers on 2-phase dynamic computed tomography (CT). This study included 217 primary lung cancer patients (141 adenocarcinomas [ADs], 48 squamous cell carcinomas [SCCs], 20 small cell lung carcinomas [SCLCs], and 8 others) who were examined using a 2-phase dynamic scan. Regions of interest were identified and mean enhancement values were calculated. After excluding the 20 SCLCs because these lesions had different clinical stages from the other cancer types, the mean attenuation values and subtractions between phases were compared between types of non-small cell lung carcinomas (NSCLCs) using the Kruskal–Wallis test. Late phase attenuation and attenuation of the late minus unenhanced phase (LMU) of SCCs were significantly higher than those of ADs (p<0.05). To differentiate SCC and AD in the late phase, a threshold of 80.21 Hounsfield units (HU) gave 52.9% accuracy. In LMU, a threshold of 52.16 HU gave 59.3% accuracy.     Decontamination efficiencies of pot-type water purifiers for ¹³¹I, ¹³⁴Cs and ¹³⁷Cs in rainwater contaminated during Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster.

    Rainwater was contaminated by a large release of radionuclides into the environment during the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster. It became a matter of concern for Japan when several water purification plants detected ¹³¹I contamination in the drinking water. In the present study, the decontamination efficiency of two easily obtainable commercial water purifiers were examined for rainwater contaminated with ¹³¹I, ¹³⁴Cs and ¹³⁷Cs. The water purifiers removed 94.2-97.8% of the ¹³¹I and 84.2-91.5% of the ¹³⁴Cs and ¹³⁷Cs after one filtration. Seven filtrations removed 98.2-99.6% of the ¹³¹I and over 98.0% of the ¹³⁴Cs and ¹³⁷Cs. From a practical perspective, over the fourth filtrations were not needed because of no significant improvements after the third filtration

    <div><p>The distribution of radiocesium was examined in bamboo shoots, <i>Phyllostachys pubescens</i>, collected from 10 sites located some 41 to 1140 km from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, Japan, in the Spring of 2012, 1 year after the Fukushima nuclear accident. Maximum activity concentrations for radiocesium <sup>134</sup>Cs and <sup>137</sup>Cs in the edible bamboo shoot parts, 41 km away from the Fukushima Daiichi plant, were in excess of 15.3 and 21.8 kBq/kg (dry weight basis; 1.34 and 1.92 kBq/kg, fresh weight), respectively. In the radiocesium-contaminated samples, the radiocesium activities were higher in the inner tip parts, including the upper edible parts and the apical culm sheath, than in the hardened culm sheath and underground basal parts. The radiocesium/potassium ratios also tended to be higher in the inner tip parts. The radiocesium activities increased with bamboo shoot length in another bamboo species, <i>Phyllostachys bambusoides</i>, suggesting that radiocesium accumulated in the inner tip parts during growth of the shoots.</p></div

    Radiocesium-bearing microparticles discovered on masks worn during indoor cleaning

    Abstract A decade has passed since the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident on March 11, 2011. However, radioactive particles have recently been detected in the indoor air of some residences near the FDNPP. Following the recommendations of previous research, we determined the presence of radiocesium-bearing microparticles (CsMPs) and measured the radioactivity of radiocesium that adhered on non-woven face masks worn by six persons during the indoor cleaning of 59 residences in Namie, Futaba, Okuma, and Tomioka towns in Fukushima Prefecture. Of the 284 masks worn in this study, significant 137Cs radioactivity was detected in 268, and 44 new CsMPs were discovered in 28. The results of this study also suggest the presence of highly concentrated soluble radiocesium particles or soluble radioactive cesium aerosols adhered to house dust. This implies that the CsMPs constituted a large proportion of radioactivity in the indoor air contamination for particles in the 1.0–2.5 µm size range due to the radioactive radiocesium particles. It is desirable to wear masks during cleaning to prevent inhalation of CsMPs

    Effects of parity and litter size on the energy contents and immunoglobulin G concentrations of Awassi ewe colostrum

    This study determined the energy content and immunoglobulin G (IgG) concentration of Awassi ewe colostrum and examined the effects of parity and litter size on them. Colostral samples were collected from 57 ewes from the 1st to 7th parities with a litter size of 1 or 2, within 12 h after lambing. Concentrations of colostral fat, lactose, and protein were measured as energy sources, and IgG was measured as representative of the immunoglobulin content of the colostrum. Mean values obtained from analyses of the ewe colostrum samples were 7.4±2.1 kJ/g for the energy value and 60.9±21.4 mg/mL for IgG. Ewe parity did not influence colostral energy content, whereas the IgG concentration of the colostrum obtained from the primiparous ewes was higher than that from the multiparous ewes (P < 0.05). Among the multiparous ewes, the colostrum obtained from ewes carrying twins showed higher energy content and IgG concentrations than that from those carrying a single lamb (P < 0.05)
