A pilot study of temsirolimus and body composition.

PurposeBody weight and composition play a role in cancer etiology, prognosis, and treatment response. Therefore, we analyzed the weight, body composition changes, and outcome in patients treated with temsirolimus, an mTor inhibitor that has weight loss as one of its side effects.Patients and methodsSixteen patients with advanced solid tumors treated with temsirolimus were studied; body composition was evaluated utilizing computerized tomography images. Sarcopenia was defined as skeletal muscle index lower than 38.5 cm(2)/m(2) for women and 52.4 cm(2)/m(2) for men.ResultsFive of 16 patients (31 %) were men; median age, 60 years. Forty-four percent (7/16) of patients were sarcopenic. Fatigue, anemia, hyperglycemia, and hyperlipidemia were common. Baseline sarcopenia and body composition did not correlate with worse toxicity or treatment outcome. However, there was a trend for greater loss of adipose area (p = 0.07), fat mass (p = 0.09), and adipose index (p = 0.07) for patients with grade 3 or 4 toxicities versus those with grade 1 and 2 side effects.ConclusionPatients with higher grade toxicities tended to lose more body fat, suggesting a possible end-organ metabolic effect of temsirolimus. These observations merit exploration in a larger cohort of patients

Portuguese colonial architectural archives at the Arquivo HistĂłrico Ultramarino, mid 19th century - 1975

The Arquivo Histórico Ultramarino (AHU - Overseas Historical Archive) holds Portuguese architectural and also engineering archival records created and managed by the Colonial Public Offices seated in Lisbon, dating back to the end of the 16th century to 1975. The archives from the offices that performed duties in the Portuguese colonies remained there, even after their independence from Portugal. Until recently, records dated from the mid 19th century onwards were poorly identified, a panorama that changed over the last decade. These records are related to Angola, Cabo Verde, Guinea-Bissao, São Tomé and Príncipe, Mozambique, previous Portugese possessions in India, Macao and East Timor. The AHU hosted two funded projects by the Portuguese Foundation to Science and Technology (FCT) submitted by the Centre for Socioeconomic and Territorial Studies from the Lisbon University Institute (DINÂMIA'CET-IUL). The participation of the AHU in both projects allowed processing these records bulk. The first one was “The Colonial Urbanization Offices”, a three year project which benefited from the collaboration of five archival fellowships during nearly two years. The second project is the “Coast to Coast”, has a similar duration to the previous and will be ongoing until December 2019, with the contribution of an archival fellowship. Two archivists of the AHU participated in these projects as well, supervising the archival processing as researchers.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Performance indicators for reactive distillation design

    Get PDF
A cost indicator for the design and multi-objective optimization of reactive distillation columns, designated capacity, was introduced in previous work by the authors. The question of this indicator’s effectiveness as a measure of the actual column cost, is herein investigated over a number of designs by comparing it with the value obtained by means of conventional costing procedures. The results show that the level of accuracy obtained when using capacity is satisfactory and certainly acceptable for a preliminary design stage

Retrogression and re-ageing of 7075 aluminium alloy : microstructural characterization

    Get PDF
Industrial Summary: The 7075 aluminium alloy presents a low stress corrosion cracking strength when aged to achieve maximum mechanical strength, T6 temper; high stress corrosion cracking strength is attained with overageing, T7 temper; but with loss of mechanical strength. Retrogression and re-ageing treatments improves the stress corrosion behaviour of the alloy whilst maintaining the mechanical resistance of the T6 temper. The microstructures produced by the retrogression and re-ageing treatments were characterized in this study by transmission electron microscopy, electron diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry. The precipitation is extremely Æne and distributed homogeneously inside the grains, being slightly denser and more stable than that resulting from the T6 temper; whilst the grain boundary precipitation is quite different from that resulting from T6 treatment, the particles being coarser, and much closer to the precipitation resulting from T7 temper. The retrogression temperature is the main property controlling factor; a higher retrogression temperature, increasing the dissolution degree, promotes the formation of more stable precipitates on re-ageing

Towards an integrated stratigraphy of the Gramame Formation (Maastrichtian), CIPASA quarry, Pernambuco-ParaĂba Basin, NE Brazil

This study presents the integrated biostratigraphic (calcareous nannofossils and foraminifera), petrographic, geochemical and ichnological analyzes of the Gramame Formation (Maastrichtian) at the CIPASA Quarry section, in the Pernambuco-ParaĂba Basin, northeastern Brazil. A high resolution calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphic study has been carried out, allowing to subdivide the studied section into three subzones of Maastrichtian age: CC25A, CC25B, and CC25C. Each biostratigraphic unit was further characterized by petrographic, geochemical and ichnological parameters. During the Maastrichtian the area was characterized by a dry and warm climate with low influx of terrigenous sediments. These conditions were fundamental to the widespread development of a carbonate ramp system in an outer neritic to bathyal setting, with deposition of alternating calcareous mudstones and argillaceous mudstones of the Gramame Formation. The Gramame Formation belongs to the transgressive system tract of second-order type, characteristic of a Passive Margin Sequence. The studied section consists of part of a third order deposicional cycle, which is arranged in a transgressive systems tract and a highstand systems tract. The lowstand systems tract was not characterized
