Improved delineation of short cortical association fibers and gray/white matter boundary using whole-brain three-dimensional diffusion tensor imaging at submillimeter spatial resolution.
Recent emergence of human connectome imaging has led to a high demand on angular and spatial resolutions for diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). While there have been significant growths in high angular resolution diffusion imaging, the improvement in spatial resolution is still limited due to a number of technical challenges, such as the low signal-to-noise ratio and high motion artifacts. As a result, the benefit of a high spatial resolution in the whole-brain connectome imaging has not been fully evaluated in vivo. In this brief report, the impact of spatial resolution was assessed in a newly acquired whole-brain three-dimensional diffusion tensor imaging data set with an isotropic spatial resolution of 0.85 mm. It was found that the delineation of short cortical association fibers is drastically improved as well as the definition of fiber pathway endings into the gray/white matter boundary-both of which will help construct a more accurate structural map of the human brain connectome
Perturbation-induced droplets for manipulating droplet structure and configuration in microfluidics
In this work, we mechanically perturb a liquid-in-liquid jet to manipulate the size and structure of the droplets formed from break-up of the jet. The induced break-up is relatively insensitive to fluctuations in the surrounding fluid flow. When the amplitude of perturbations is large and the interfacial tension of the liquid–liquid system is low, the size of the droplets can be precisely tuned by controlling the rate at which the liquid exits the tip of the dispensing nozzle through the frequency of perturbation. When applied to microfluidic devices with the appropriate geometry, our perturbation-induced droplet approach offers a strategy to manipulating droplet structures. We demonstrate that by varying the imposed perturbation frequency and phase lag, the structure of the multi-compartmental drops and the configuration of the resultant drops in the same flow condition can be manipulated. Moreover, after careful treatment of the wettability of the devices, we show that the structure of the droplets can be precisely controlled to change from single emulsion to double emulsion within the same device. The perturbation-induced droplet generation represents a new paradigm in the engineering of droplets, enhancing current droplet-based technologies for applications ranging from particle fabrication to confined micro-reactions.postprin
Electro-hydrodynamic chopping of water-in-water jet in coflowing mcrofluidic channels
Junior Scientist, Postdoc and Student WorkshopsTalk #25In the co-flowing capillary microfluidic channels, two immiscible aqueous phases typically forms water-in-water (w/w) jet. Due to the ultra-low interfacial tension (<1mN/m) between the two phases, breakup of the w/w jet can hardly be induced by capillary instability alone [1]. Electrostatic force, applied by separately charging two aqueous phases with different electro-conductivity, can be an auxiliary force to break up the w/w jet. Successful breakup of the w/w jet may provide a new approach for generation of w/w emulsion in an all-aqueous environment free of organic solvents, which are potentially useful in biochemical and biomedical applications.
Water-in-water emulsion has been successfully fabricated by hydrodynamic perturbation [1] and electro-hydrodynamic approaches [2]. However, breakup of the w/w jet has not been demonstrated in viscous aqueous phases, which are frequently used in practical solutions. We inject a single phase of sodium dextran sulfate (SDS)/dextran into its immiscible continuous phase of PEG solution to form a w/w jet. Upon applying a DC electric field at 30-80 volts, the viscous jet expands in diameters with the applied voltage [3]. By tracing the velocity of small particles inside the jet, we found the jet velocity is also reduced because of the restriction of mass conservation. When further increasing the applied voltages to 200-1000 volts, we observed an interesting transition from jetting to dripping: along with the deceleration and expansion of the inner fluid, the jet nearly stops in the channel and almost blocks the entire channel before it is chopped and pushed downstream by the continues phase (schematic 1). The jet chopping is induced by force balancing among the electrostatics, hydrodynamics and interfacial tension.published_or_final_versio
Unique Crystallization of Fullerenes: Fullerene Flowers
Solution-phase crystallization of fullerene molecules strongly depends on the types of solvent and their ratios because solvent molecules are easily included in the crystal lattice and distort its structure. The C-70 (solute)-mesitylene (solvent) system yields crystals with various morphologies and structures, such as cubes, tubes, and imperfect rods. Herein, using C-60 and C-70 dissolved in mesitylene, we present a novel way to grow unique flower-shaped crystals with six symmetric petals. The different solubility of C-60 and C-70 in mesitylene promotes nucleation of C-70 with sixfold symmetry in the early stage, which is followed by co-crystallization of both C-60 and C-70 molecules, leading to lateral petal growth. Based on the growth mechanism, we obtained more complex fullerene crystals, such as multi-deck flowers and tube-flower complexes, by changing the sequence and parameters of crystallization.1134Ysciescopu
High Fidelity Tape Transfer Printing Based On Chemically Induced Adhesive Strength Modulation
Transfer printing, a two-step process (i.e. picking up and printing) for heterogeneous integration, has been widely exploited for the fabrication of functional electronics system. To ensure a reliable process, strong adhesion for picking up and weak or no adhesion for printing are required. However, it is challenging to meet the requirements of switchable stamp adhesion. Here we introduce a simple, high fidelity process, namely tape transfer printing(TTP), enabled by chemically induced dramatic modulation in tape adhesive strength. We describe the working mechanism of the adhesion modulation that governs this process and demonstrate the method by high fidelity tape transfer printing several types of materials and devices, including Si pellets arrays, photodetector arrays, and electromyography (EMG) sensors, from their preparation substrates to various alien substrates. High fidelity tape transfer printing of components onto curvilinear surfaces is also illustrated
Impact of visceral fat on skeletal muscle mass and vice versa in a prospective cohort study: The Korean Sarcopenic Obesity Study (KSOS)
Objectives: Sarcopenia and visceral obesity have been suggested to aggravate each other, resulting in a vicious cycle. However, evidence based on prospective study is very limited. Our purpose was to investigate whether visceral fat promotes a decrease in skeletal muscle mass and vice versa. Methods: We observed changes in anthropometric and body composition data during a follow-up period of 27.6±2.8 months in 379 Korean men and women (mean age 51.9±14.6 years) from the Korean Sarcopenic Obesity Study (KSOS). Appendicular lean soft tissue (ALST) mass was calculated using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, and visceral fat area (VFA) was measured using computed tomography at baseline and follow-up examination. Results: ALST mass significantly decreased, whereas trunk and total fat mass increased in both men and women despite no significant change in weight and body mass index. In particular, women with visceral obesity at baseline had a greater decrease in ALST mass than those without visceral obesity (P=0.001). In multiple linear regression analysis, baseline VFA was an independent negative predictor of the changes in ALST after adjusting for confounding factors including age, gender, life style and body composition parameters, insulin resistance, high sensitivity C-reactive protein and vitamin D levels (P=0.001), whereas the association between baseline ALST mass and changes in VFA was not statistically significant (P=0.555). Conclusions: This longitudinal study showed that visceral obesity was associated with future loss of skeletal muscle mass in Korean adults. These results may provide novel insight into sarcopenic obesity in an aging society
Imaging Electronic Correlations in Twisted Bilayer Graphene near the Magic Angle
Twisted bilayer graphene with a twist angle of around 1.1{\deg} features a
pair of isolated flat electronic bands and forms a strongly correlated
electronic platform. Here, we use scanning tunneling microscopy to probe local
properties of highly tunable twisted bilayer graphene devices and show that the
flat bands strongly deform when aligned with the Fermi level. At half filling
of the bands, we observe the development of gaps originating from correlated
insulating states. Near charge neutrality, we find a previously unidentified
correlated regime featuring a substantially enhanced flat band splitting that
we describe within a microscopic model predicting a strong tendency towards
nematic ordering. Our results provide insights into symmetry breaking
correlation effects and highlight the importance of electronic interactions for
all filling factors in twisted bilayer graphene.Comment: Main text 9 pages, 4 figures; Supplementary Information 25 page
Hot Streaks in Artistic, Cultural, and Scientific Careers
The hot streak, loosely defined as winning begets more winnings, highlights a
specific period during which an individual's performance is substantially
higher than her typical performance. While widely debated in sports, gambling,
and financial markets over the past several decades, little is known if hot
streaks apply to individual careers. Here, building on rich literature on
lifecycle of creativity, we collected large-scale career histories of
individual artists, movie directors and scientists, tracing the artworks,
movies, and scientific publications they produced. We find that, across all
three domains, hit works within a career show a high degree of temporal
regularity, each career being characterized by bursts of high-impact works
occurring in sequence. We demonstrate that these observations can be explained
by a simple hot-streak model we developed, allowing us to probe quantitatively
the hot streak phenomenon governing individual careers, which we find to be
remarkably universal across diverse domains we analyzed: The hot streaks are
ubiquitous yet unique across different careers. While the vast majority of
individuals have at least one hot streak, hot streaks are most likely to occur
only once. The hot streak emerges randomly within an individual's sequence of
works, is temporally localized, and is unassociated with any detectable change
in productivity. We show that, since works produced during hot streaks garner
significantly more impact, the uncovered hot streaks fundamentally drives the
collective impact of an individual, ignoring which leads us to systematically
over- or under-estimate the future impact of a career. These results not only
deepen our quantitative understanding of patterns governing individual
ingenuity and success, they may also have implications for decisions and
policies involving predicting and nurturing individuals with lasting impact
Properties of Light Flavour Baryons in Hypercentral quark model
The light flavour baryons are studied within the quark model using the hyper
central description of the three-body system. The confinement potential is
assumed as hypercentral coulomb plus power potential () with power
index . The masses and magnetic moments of light flavour baryons are
computed for different power index, starting from 0.5 to 1.5. The
predicted masses and magnetic moments are found to attain a saturated value
with respect to variation in beyond the power index 1.0. Further
we computed transition magnetic moments and radiative decay width of light
flavour baryons. The results are in good agreement with known experimental as
well as other theoretical models.Comment: Accepted in Pramana J. of Physic
